Drying shrinkage of concrete occurs due to the loss of moisture and thus, it is controlled by moisture diffusion process. On the other hand, the shrinkage causes cracking of concrete and affects its moisture diffusion properties. Therefore, moisture diffusion and drying shrinkage are two coupled processes and their interactive effect is important for the durability of concrete structures. In this paper, the two material parameters in the moisture diffusion equation, i.e., the moisture capacity and humidity diffusivity, are modified by two different methods to include the effect of drying shrinkage on the moisture diffusion. The effect of drying shrinkage on the humidity diffusivity is introduced by the scalar damage parameter. The effect of drying shrinkage on the moisture capacity is evaluated by an analytical model based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics and minimum potential energy principle for a two-phase composite. The mechanical part of drying shrinkage is modeled as an elastoplastic damage problem. The coupled problem of moisture diffusion and drying shrinkage is solved using a finite element method. The present model can predict that the drying shrinkage accelerates the moisture diffusion in concrete, and in turn, the accelerated drying process increases the shrinkage strain. The coupling effects are demonstrated by a numerical example.

Partial least squares regression (PLS) is a biased, non-least squares regression method and is an alternative to the ordinary least squares regression (OLS) when predictors are highly collinear or predictors outnumber observations. One way to understand the properties of biased regression methods is to know how the estimators shrink the OLS estimator. In this paper, we introduce an expression for the shrinkage factor of PLS and develop a new shrinkage expression, and then prove the equivalence of the two representations. We use two near-infrared (NIR) data sets to show general behavior of the shrinkage and in particular for what eigendirections PLS expands the OLS coefficients.
The occurrence of longitudinal cracking in concrete deck of box girder bridge is affected by many factors, but the most important factors are the shrinkage and thermal gradient of deck slabs. In this study, therefore, the tensile stresses at the bottom of deck were calculated from the experimental data(autogeneous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, and thermal gradient of deck slab). Also, the possibility of longitudinal cracks at bottom of deck was estimated. For this purpose, full-scale box girder segments have been fabricated and tested. The thermal gradients and shrinkage strains of deck slabs were measured after placement of concrete. Also, analytic program was conducted for the evaluation of longitudinal cracking in bridge deck considering differential shrinkage induced from non-uniform moisture distributions in concrete.
It is generally referred that life cycle of concrete construction is depend on whether durability of concrete is obtained or not. Nevertheless, it has not been yet applied that new material and technology to improve durability of concrete such as seaside concrete construction. In this study, chemical agent which is capable of improving durability added to 2 types seaside concrete mixs and evaluated engineering properties such as slump, air content, setting time and compressive strength. Besides shrinkage crack with an restraint condition and chloride ion penetration tests were executed to measure resistance of concrete added chemical agent and then compared non-added. It was appeared that engineering properties and resistant for chlorides was possible to improved. But resistant for shrinkage crack was not noticeable improvement than non-added. Therefore it is necessary that more consideration and following study to improve durability aspect to shrinkage crack and chlorides resistant.
Shrinkage properties of drawn textured Poly(trimethylene terephthalate, PTT) yarn, which has been developed recently, were investigated to provide fundamental information for the textile industry. Shrinkage ratio characteristics on PTT yarn with six different count were investigated with tension, dry and wet thermal temperature. In non-tension, the shrinkage ratio were increased to increasing temperature at dry and wet thermal treatment, and in tension, the shrinkage ratio were increased to increasing tension at dry and wet thermal treatment.
The purpose of the work is to present successful applications of a modified wavelet shrinkage method for the accurate and fast estimation of a transfer function. Although the experimental process of determining a transfer function introduces not only Gaussian but also non-Gaussian noises, most existing estimation methods are based only on a Gaussian noise model. To overcome this limitation, we propose to employ a modified wavelet shrinkage method in which L1 -based median filtering and L2 -based wavelet shrinkage are applied repeatedly. The underlying theory behind this approach is briefly explained and the superior performance of this modified wavelet shrinkage technique is demonstrated by a numerical example.
In order to improve the housing culture, construction changes for the utilization of diverse and multifunctional spaces are appearing in response to the increasing diverse needs of consumers. Cellular Light-weight Concrete (CLC) is being developed for use in fire-resistant heat-insulating walls and non-bearing walls. However, manufacturing non-uniformity has become a problem as a drawback due to the use of foamed bubbles and normal temperature curing, and additional research is required. Therefore, in order to suppress cracks due to drying shrinkage, silica sand is mixed with CLC to try to understand its characteristics. In the experiment, the compressive strength from 7 to 28 days of age was measured via a constant temperature and humidity chamber, and the drying shrinkage was analyzed according to each condition using a strain gauge. The compressive strength of matrix tends to decrease as the substitution rate of silica sand increases. This is judged by the result derived from the fact that the specific surface area of silica sand is smaller than that of slag. Based on KS F 2701 (ALC block), the compressive strength of 0.6 products is 4.9 MPa or more as a guide, so the maximum replacement rate of silica sand that satisfies this can be seen at 60%. Looking at the change in drying shrinkage for just 7 days, the shrinkage due to temperature change and drying is 0.7 mm, and the possibility of cracking due to shrinkage can be seen, and it seems that continuous improvement and supplementation are needed in the future.
This research investigates the drying shrinkage of non-sintering cement(NSC) matrix added phosphogypsum(PG) and waste lime(WL) to granulated blast furnace slag(GBFS) as sulfate and alkali activators with various curing condition. The experimental results are follow: When the moisture is fully supplied at the early curing age, there is effect which carries out abundant generation of the ettringite which is an expansion nature mineral, and compensates for contraction with a chemical prestress concept.
We investigated the changes in the egg diameter of chub mackerel Scomber japonicus with the stages of egg development (and distinguished between hydrated oocyte and non-hydrated oocyte) for 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 30 days. The chub mackerel oocytes were preserved in seven fixing solutions (70% ethyl alcohol, 99.9% ethyl alcohol, 5% formalin, 10% formalin, 5% neutral buffered formalin, 10% neutral buffered formalin and Gilson's solution). At 30 days, the chub mackerel hydrated oocytes preserved in 70% ethyl alcohol and 99.9% ethyl alcohol had shrunk by 5.2% and 7.9%, respectively. Similarly, the non-hydrated oocytes in the same solutions shrunk by 10.3% and 14.0%, respectively. Oocytes preserved in Gilson's solution had an average egg diameter decrease in both the hydrated oocyte (by 16.9%) and non-hydrated oocytes (by 15.6%). The diameter of the preserved hydrated oocytes did not significantly differ between the 5% formalin, 10% formalin, 5% neutral buffered formalin and 10% neutral buffered formalin, with shrinkage percentages of 0.6%, 0.1%, 1.9% and 3.4%, respectively (P>0.05). Similarly, the shrinkage percentages of the non-hydrated oocytes were 4.3% (5% formalin), 5.5% (10% formalin), 4.3% (5% neutral buffered formalin), and 4.1% (10% neutral buffered formalin).
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the durability of ternary blended concrete mixtures adding ultra fine admixture. METHODS : From the literature review, crack was considered as the main distress failure criterion on concrete bridge deck pavement. To reduce the initial crack development due to drying shrinkage, CSA expansion agent and shrink reduction agent were used to ternary blended concrete mixtures as a admixture. Laboratory tests including chloride ion penetration test, surface scaling test, rapid freeze & thaw resistance test, non restrained drying shrinkage and restrained drying shrinkage test were conducted to verify the durability of ternary blended concrete mixtures. RESULTS : Based on the test results, proposed mixtures were verified as high qualified durable materials. Expecially initial drying shrinkage crack was not occurred in ternary blended concrete mixtures with CSA expansion agent. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the durability of proposed ternary blend concrete mixture was acceptable to apply for the concrete bridge deck pavement.
