Free non-linear vibration of a rotating thin ring with a constant speed is analyzed when the ring has both the in-plane and out-of-plane motions. The geometric non-linearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton's principle, the coupled non-linear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from three non-linear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the non- linear behavior more precisely.
The non-linear static and dynamic response of doubly curved thin isotropic shells has been studied for the step and sinusoidal loadings. Dynamic analogues Von Karman-Donnel type shell equations are used. Clamped immovable and simply supported immovable boundary conditions are considered. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations of the shell are discretized in space and time domains using the harmonic differential quadrature (HDQ) and finite differences (FD) methods, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed HDQ-FD coupled methodology is demonstrated by the numerical examples. Numerical examples demonstrate the satisfactory accuracy, efficiency and versatility of the presented approach.

In the present study, Navier-Stokes equation is numerically solved by use of a Finite analytic method to obtain the 2-dimensional flow field in the square cavity. The basic idea of F.A.M. is the incorporation of local analytic solutions in the numerical solution of linear or non-linear partial differential equations. In the F.A.M., the total problem is subdivided into a number of all elements. The local analytic solution is obtained for the small element in which the governing equation, if non-linear, to be linearized. The local analytic solutions are then expressed in algebraic form and are overlapped to cover the entire region of the problem. The assembly of these local analytic solutions, which still preserve the overall nonlinearity of the governing equations, results in a system of linear algebraic equations. The system of algebraic equations is then solved to provide the numerical solutions of the total problem. The computed flow field shows the same characteristics to physical concept of flow phenomena.
This paper aims to discuss the Non Darcy boundary layer flow of non-conducting viscous fluid with magnetic ferroparticles over a permeable linearly stretching surface with ohmic dissipation and mixed convective heat transfer. A magnetic dipole is applied "a" distance below the surface of stretching sheet. The governing equations are modeled. Similarity transformation is used to convert the system of partial differential equations to a system of non-linear but ordinary differential equations. The ODEs are solved numerically. The effects of sundry parameters on the flow properties like velocity, pressure, skin-friction coefficient and Nusselt number are presented. It is deduced the frictional resistance of Lorentz force decreases with stronger electric field and the trend reverses for temperature. Skin friction coefficient increase with increase in ferromagnetic interaction parameter. Whereas, Nusselt number decrease.

The non-linear dynamic characteristics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid are investigated when the pipe is clamped at both ends. To consider the geometric non-linearity for the radial and circumferential displacements, this study adopts the Lagrange strain theory for large deformation and the extensible dynamics based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory for slenderness assumption. By using the Hamilton principle, the non-linear partial differential equations are derived for the in-plane motions of the pipe, considering the fluid inertia forces as a kind of non-conservative forces. The linear and non-linear terms in the governing equations are compared with those in the previous study, and some significant differences are discussed. To investigate the dynamic characteristics of the system, the discretized equations of motion are derived form the Galerkin method. The natural frequencies varying with the flow velocity are computed fen the two cases, which one is the linear problem and the other is the linearized problem in the neighborhood of the equilibrium position. Finally, the time responses at various flow velocities are directly computed by using the generalized- method. From these results, we should to describe the non-linear behavior to analyze dynamics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid more precisely.

This study uses distributed parameter systems as the spatial discretization technique, modelling in lumped parameter systems, and applies fast WALSH transform and the Picard's iteration method to high order partial differential equations and matrix partial differential equations. This thesis presents a new algorithm which usefully exercises the optimal control in the distributed parameter systems. In exercising optimal control of distributed parameter systems, excellent consequences are found without using the existing decentralized control or hierarchical control method. This study will help apply to linear time-varying systems and non-linear systems. Further research on algorithm will be required to solve the problems of convergence in case of numerous applicable intervals.

The method of vibration analysis used is the one developed by the senior author. He developed and reported, in 1974, a simple but exact method of calculating the natural frequency of beam and tower structures with irregular cross-sections and attached mass/masses. Since 1989, this method has been extended to two-dimensional problems with several types of given conditions and has been reported at several international conferences. This method uses the deflection influence surfaces. The finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper. In order to reduce the pivotal points required, the three simultaneous partial differential equations of equilibrium with three dependent variables, w, M$_{x}$, and $M_{y}$, are used instead of the one forth order partial differential equation. By neglecting the M$_{x}$ terms, the size of the matrices needed to solve the resulting linear equations are reduced to two thirds of the "non-modified" equations.tions.

Parametric and forced non-linear vibrations of an axially moving rotor both in non-resonance and near-resonance cases have been investigated analytically in this paper. The axial speed is assumed to involve a mean value along with small harmonic fluctuations. Hamilton's principle is employed for this gyroscopic system to derive three coupled non-linear equations of motion. Longitudinal inertia is neglected under the quasi-static stretch assumption and two integro-partial-differential equations are obtained. With introducing a complex variable, the equations of motion is presented in the form of a single, complex equation. The method of multiple scales is applied directly to the resulting equation and the approximate closed-form solution is obtained. Stability boundaries for the steady-state response are formulated and the frequency-response curves are drawn. A number of case studies are considered and the numerical simulations are presented to highlight the effects of system parameters on the linear and nonlinear natural frequencies, mode shapes, limit cycles and the frequency-response curves of the system.

We describe a fast numerical method for non-separable elliptic equations in self-adjoin form on irregular adaptive domains. One of the most successful results in numerical PDE is developing rapid elliptic solvers for separable EPDEs, for example, Fourier transformation methods for Poisson problem on a square, however, it is known that there is no rapid elliptic solvers capable of solving a general nonseparable problems. It is the purpose of this paper to present an iterative solver for linear EPDEs in self-adjoint form. The scheme discussed in this paper solves a given non-separable equation using a sequence of solutions of Poisson equations, therefore, the most important key for such a method is having a good Poison solver. High performance is achieved by using a fast high-order adaptive Poisson solver which requires only about 500 floating point operations per gridpoint in order to obtain machine precision for both the computed solution and its partial derivatives. A few numerical examples have been presented.
In the present paper an analytical model was developed to study the non-linear vibrations of Functionally Graded Carbon Nanotube (FG-CNT) reinforced doubly-curved shallow shells using the Multiple Scales Method (MSM). The nonlinear partial differential equations of motion are based on the FGM shallow shell hypothesis, the non-linear geometric Von-Karman relationships, and the Galerkin method to reduce the partial differential equations associated with simply supported boundary conditions. The novelty of the present model is the simultaneous prediction of the natural frequencies and their mode shapes versus different curvatures (cylindrical, spherical, conical, and plate) and the different types of FG-CNTs. In addition to combining the vibration analysis with optimization algorithms based on the genetic algorithm, a design optimization methode was developed to maximize the natural frequencies. By considering the expression of the non-dimensional frequency as an objective optimization function, a genetic algorithm program was developed by valuing the mechanical properties, the geometric properties and the FG-CNT configuration of shallow double curvature shells. The results obtained show that the curvature, the volume fraction and the types of NTC distribution have considerable effects on the variation of the Dimensionless Fundamental Linear Frequency (DFLF). The frequency response of the shallow shells of the FG-CNTRC showed two types of nonlinear hardening and softening which are strongly influenced by the change in the fundamental vibration mode. In GA optimization, the mechanical properties and geometric properties in the transverse direction, the volume fraction, and types of distribution of CNTs have a considerable effect on the fundamental frequencies of shallow double-curvature shells. Where the difference between optimized and not optimized DFLF can reach 13.26%.
