  • Based on stability theory of current rigid steel frames and using the three-column subassemblage model, the governing equations for determining the effective length factor (${\mu}$-factor) of the columns in semirigid composite frames are derived. The effects of the nonlinear moment-rotation characteristics of beam-to-column connections and composite action of slab are considered. Furthermore, using a two-bay three-storey composite frame with semi-rigid connections as an example, the effects of the non-linear moment-rotation characteristics of connections and load value on the ${\mu}$-factor are numerically studied and the ${\mu}$-factors obtained by the proposed method and Baraket-Chen's method are compared with those obtained by the exact finite element method. It was found that the proposed method has good accuracy and can be used in stability analysis of semi-rigid composite frames.

  • Identification method is formulated to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings under NFR(Near Field Recording) sliders. Impulse responses and frequency response functions of NFR sliders are obtained on numerical non-linear models including rigid motion of slider and fluid motion of air bearing under the slider. Modal parameters and system parameters are identified by modal analysis method and instrumental variable method. The parameters of sliders are utilized to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings. Also, this study shows the difference between the dynamic characteristics of NFR and HDD slides, and squeeze effect of air bearings.

  • A virtual prototype (VP) model of the rotor-to-stator rub of the rotor system is established to study the nonlinear vibration characteristics. The non-linear bearing stiffness is considered to approximate to an actual system in the model. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a special structure of stator is designed to simulate different kinds of rub condition. The results of experiment are well consistent with the results of simulation by VP. The vibration characteristics of rub-impact are well observed by VP model under different conditions. Based on the validated model, the torsional vibration of rub-impact is discussed. The contribution of this paper is to provide one new approach to study rub-impact problem. Based on the validated VP model, the more research can be done for incident fault identification.

  • This study presents a change-point in the 30 years (1976-2005) time series of the annual and the heavy precipitation characteristics (amount, days and intensity) averaged over South Korea using Bayesian approach. The criterion for the heavy precipitation used in this study is 80 mm/day. Using non-informative priors, the exact Bayes estimators of parameters and unknown change-point are obtained. Also, the posterior probability and 90% highest posterior density credible intervals for the mean differences between before and after the change-point are examined. The results show that a single change-point in the precipitation intensity and the heavy precipitation characteristics has occurred around 1996. As the results, the precipitation intensity and heavy precipitation characteristics have clearly increased after the change-point. However, the annual precipitation amount and days show a statistically insignificant single change-point model. These results are consistent with earlier works based on a simple linear regression model.

  • The characteristics of fatigue life distribution for Carbon/epoxy composite laminates was investigated under tension-tension loading(R=0.1). The statistical nature of the fatigue life of the composite materials was analyzed by Weibull, normal, lognormal distributions As a result, it was observed that the correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions for the fatigue life is good. The distribution of the static ultimate strength has the characteristic of lognormal distribution and distribution of the fatigue life has characteristics of the weibull distribution.

  • Structures of domestic nuclear power plants are designed to perform elastic behavior against beyond design earthquakes, but studies on the nonlinear behavior of structures have been insufficient since the beyond design earthquake. Accordingly, it is judged that it will be necessary to develop an evaluation method that considers the nonlinear behavioral characteristics to check the safety margin for a standard nuclear power plant structure. It is confirmed that the restoring force characteristics for each member level can be identified through the calculation formula, and the lateral stiffness for each story can also be easily calculated by JEAC 4601. In addition, as a result of applying the evaluation method of JEAC 4601 as a nonlinear restoring force model of the nuclear power plant, a certain degree of safety margin can be identified.

  • Rubber has large differences in elastic characteristics from the other solid materials such as metals. Firstly, the rubber exhibits considerably large elastic compliance. Second is highly non-linear elasticity in which the compliance decreases with increase in strain. The main objective in this research is to reveal the dependence of rubber friction upon these elastic characteristics of the rubber in detail. A super elastic FEM analysis is carried out with using an elastic property of practical rubber. From the calculated result, it is cleared that the rubber makes large real contacting area easier than the metals.

  • In this paper, the performance of post-installed adhesive bonded anchor embedded in concrete is assessed using numerical simulations. This study aims at studying the influence of parameters on the performance of a chemically bonded anchorage system. Non-linear finite element modelling and simulations are carried out by properly using the material properties and phenomenon. Materials parameters such as characteristic length, fracture energy, damage criteria, tension retention and crack width of concrete and interface characteristics are carefully assigned so as to obtain a most realistic behaviour of the chemical anchor system. The peak strength of two different anchor systems obtained from present numerical studies is validated against experimental results. Furthermore, validated numerical models are used to study the load transferring mechanism and damage progression characteristics of various anchors systems where strength of concrete, strength of epoxy, and geometry and disposition of anchors are the parameters. The process of development of strain in concrete adjacent to the anchor and energy dissipated during the course of damage progression are analysed. Results show that the performance of the considered anchorage system is, though a combined effect of material and geometric parameters, but a clear distinction could be made on the parameters to achieve a desired performance based on strength, slip, strain development or dissipated energy. Inspite the increase in anchor capacity with increase in concrete strength, it brings some undesirable performance as well. Furthermore, the pullout capacity of the chemical anchor system increases with a decrease in disparity among the strength of concrete and epoxy.

  • Characteristics and synergistic effects of the coliquefaction of Alaskan subbituminous coal, wasted tire, and polypropylene were investigated in a tubing-bomb reactor at 41$0^{\circ}C$, and the coliquefaction reactions were performed at 37$0^{\circ}C$~45$0^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the coliquefaction mechanism. The coliquefaction kinetic model based on the free-radical theory was proposed and simulated by the non-linear parameter estimation method. Simulated results represented experimental ones successfully with the correlation coefficient of 0.99. When a catalyst was not used, the conversions were decreased as tetralin increase due to the decrease of liquefaction of polypropylene. When naphthenate catalysts of Mo, Co, and Fe were used, the coliquefaction conversions were increased with the increase of the liquefaction of polypropylene. When Co-naphthenate catalyst was used, the increase of the coliquefaction conversion were as high as 21~23%.

  • Temperature-dependent development model is an essential component for forecasting models of insect pests as well as for insect population models. This study reviewed the nonlinear models which explain the relationship between temperature and development rate of insects. In the present study, the types of models were classified largely into empirical and biophysical model, and the groups were subdivided into subgroups according to the similarity of mathematical equations or the connection with original idea. Empirical models that apply analytical functions describing the suitable shape of development curve were subdivided into multiple subgroups as Stinner-based types, Logan-based types, performance models and Beta distribution types. Biophysical models based on enzyme kinetic reaction were grouped as monophyletic group leading to Eyring-model, SM-model, SS-mode, and SSI-model. Finally, we described the historical development and characteristics of non-linear development models and discussed the availability of models.
