  • Fatigue strength assessment procedures have been implemented in the ship design rules by many classification societies. However, a large variation tin the details of the different approaches exists in practically all aspects influding load history assessment, stress evaluation and fatigue strength assessment. In order to assess the influences of thesd variations on the prediction of fatigue lives. a comparative study is organized by the ISSC Committee III.2 Fatigue and Fracture. A pad detail on the top of longitudinal hatch coaming of a panamax container vessel is selected for fatigue calculation. The work described in this paper is one set of results of this comparative study in which the ABS dynamics approach is applied. Through this analysis the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) With the original ABS approach, the fatigue life of this pad detail is very low, only 2.398 years. (2) The treatment of the stillwater bending moment in the ABS approach might be a source of conservatism. If the influence of stillwater bending moment is ignored, then the fatigue life for this pad detail is 7.036 years. (3) The difference between the nominal stress approach and the hot spot stress approach for this pad detail is about 26%.

  • Compression stress block used to concrete structure design substitutes equivalent triangle, rectangle, trapezoid and parabola-rectangle stress block for actual concrete stress distribution. Its shape is different in design code of the major advanced countries. It reflects the material feature of each of country. Presently, compression stress block of korea concrete design code is equal to it of ACI code that doesn't reflect the material feature of the high strength concrete. So, many research conclusions showed that it is not reasonable. The study compares concrete stress blocks of the major advanced countries and does an experiment on concrete compression stress block to know the material feature of the concrete in korea. It obtains the operating load and the concrete strain in experiment and draw stress block parameters. It compares stress block parameters applied to design code with those by the experiment conclusion. In addition, It compares and analyses nominal axial force-moment diagram by the stress block of the major advanced countries.

  • Deformation of single crystals was studied using finite element analysis to investigate the orientation dependence of plastic deformation observed in NiAl single crystals. Investigation of mechanical properties of single crystals is closely related with the understanding of deformation processes in single crystals. Orientation dependence of material behavior in NiAl single crystals was studied by rotating loading directions from 'hard' orientation. The maximum nominal compressed stress in NiAl single crystals was ranged in a quite wide scope depending on the misalignment from 'hard' orientation. As the compressed axis set closer to 'hard' orientation, the maximum nominal compressed stress rapidly increased and made <100> slips difficult to activate. Therefore, non-<100> slips will be activated instead of <100> slips for 'hard' orientation.

  • Deformations of single crystals were studied using finite element analysis to investigate the localized modes and the orientation dependence of plastic deformation observed in single crystals. Investigation of mechanical properties of single crystals is closely related with the understanding of deformation processes in single crystals. Localized bands such as shear and kink were studied and the material and geometric characteristics that influence the formation of such localized bands were investigated. Orientation dependence of material behavior in NiAl single crystals was studied by rotating slip directions from 'hard' orientation. The maximum nominal compressed stress in NiAl single crystals was widely ranged depending on the misalignment from 'hard' orientation. • For the life evaluating of notched members, it is the best way that performing the real fatigue test of structure containing notch. But this method required generally much times and costs to evaluate fatigue life. So, generally we use the modified S-N curve or several methods to predict fatigue life. In this study, crack initiation life was evaluated by fatigue testing the SAE keyhole specimen and smooth specimen made of Al 7075-T6 alloys using the constant load then obtained S-N curve of smooth specimen and P-N curve of SAE keyhole specimen. And, fatigue lives of keyhole specimen are predicted using some life prediction methods (Nominal range I method, Nominal range II method, FEM analysis) for investigating experimented results, and that were compared with experimental data. Predicted fatigue lives by FEM analysis were corresponded with experimental data between 1/3times and 3times on the whole, and predicted fatigue lives using modified S-N curve (Nominal range I method, Nominal range II method) were nonconservative compared with that of FEM analysis.

  • This paper shows a study carried out on the estimation of nominal flexural strength for CFRP-plated RC beams failed by intermediate crack debonding. A strength reduction factor is proposed to consider the effect of the intermediate crack debonding for the determination of nominal flexural strength. The proposed factor is derived from experimental data and utilizes the ratio of effective stress(or strain) in the CFRP plate to its ultimate strength(or strain) which is called effective strain model. An analytical equation for the estimation of the nominal flexural strength is formulated as a function of strength reduction factor. The validity, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed factor are established by comparing the analytical results with the experimental data, and the major design codes, as well as a number of factors given by researchers. The analytical results presented in this paper indicate that the proposed factor can effectively estimate the flexural nominal strength of CFRP-plated reinforced concrete beams failed by intermediate crack debonding.

  • In this study, the stress concentration phenomenon for the dissimilar joints(ceramic-metal) bonded by thermal treating using a soft-insert metal(copper) was investigated with the aid of FEM(finite element method) under the load condition of uniform tension. The analysis was carried out by the supposing that stress states are plane stress or plane strain and elastic or elastic-plastic. And the Von Mises yield criterion and the incremental theory as plastic flow were adopted in this analysis. As the summarized results obtained, the stress concentration phenomenon was severer as the soft insert metal was thicker, in plane strain than in plane stress and in elastic-plastic state than in elastic state. Furthermore, the inducing mechanism of stress concentration was well expressed by the constraint forces(Fc) generated between the soft and the hard material.

  • Stress concentration mainly occurs near holes and notches. Then local stress is larger than nominal stress. It is necessary that stress concentration phenomena are studied because it can act as a cause of fracture of material. In order to analyze fracture of material including holes, stress concentration factor and stress distribution must be studied more carefully. In this paper the stress concentration and distribution of a slotted plate is examined. Hardened 7:3 brass plate with 4 different slots including a circular hole is used. And ratios of slot length to its root radius are 1, 2, 3, 24, 4. The stress distribution is measured by using strain gages attached to the plate with variable width. And obtained experimental data are adjusted by using calibrated gage factor.

  • The release of residual stress by mechanical loading and unloading is often performed in the fabrication of box structure fur steel bridge. The proper degree of loading and unloading is significant at release method of residual stress by mechanical loading because that degree is changed by material and geometric shape of welded structure. Therefore, the simulation model that could exactly analyze the release of residual stress by mechanical loading is to be necessary. In this study, the non-linear behavior of weldments under external loading and unloading, such as the decrease and increase of structure stiffness, was investigated by monitoring of nominal stress and strain. Tensile loading and unloading test and the proper degree of stress relaxation was measured by sectioning technique using strain gauge. Analysis model that is indispensable for the effective application of MSR method was established on the basis of test and measurement result.
