Characteristics Analysis of Highway Traffic Noise (고속도로 발생소음의 특성 분석)

  • Highway traffic noise is the one of the most frequent pollutant source of environmental claims in Korea for the last 10 years. For abating the noise from the highways, characteristics of highway noise source should be investigated and identified before performing the abatements. Highway noises are affected by traffic volume, vehicle types and speed, tyre and pavement types. In this study, highway noises which measured from different pavements have been analyzed and compared. Especially, the noise from the asphalt concrete pavement, cement concrete pavement and low-noise pavement have been measured simultaneously at the same traffic condition and compared each other. Hopefully, the data of the study may be used for abating highway noise and further studies.

  • There are a lot of different types of noise from construction site and it depends on construction stage, equipment type and number of operating equipments. The problem is that the almost noise from construction site is high level and some kinds of noise levels are over 100 dB. In addition, if construction site is located in downtown, there are a few options to reduce noise level. Therefore several site mitigation plans were developed to reduce different types of construction noises such as breaker work, gang form and asphalt saw. They were applied in site and evaluated noise reduction performance. The test result of site insertion loss was between 4~8 dB depends on the equipment and type of work.

Actual State and Characteristics of Indoor Noise Including Residents' Living in Apartment Units (아파트 단위주거 내부생활소음의 특성과 실태)

  • The present study is a preliminary research improving the dwelling quality of apartment house as a kind of multi-family housing. The purpose of the study is to find out the actual state on characteristics of indoor noise including residents' living in apartment units. The method was field survey consisted of field measurements on equivalent noise level, observation on noise type, and interview on residents' responses. Field survey were carried out in 20 occupied apartment units from January to March 2007. The results are as follows. 1) Averages of indoor noise levels including residents' living noise were measured as $43.9{\sim}62.2\;dB(A)_{Leq5min}$, the average of each house except one was higher than the permissible level, 45 dB(A). 2) The noise types observed were mostly residents' living noise and classified into 'water hammer', 'living equipment noise', 'noise by family', 'hood noise', 'kitchen noise' in own unit, 'walking and talking noise in stairs and corridors', 'noise by neighborhood house', 'noise by the upper story' in building, and outdoor noise. 3) The residents showed slightly non-positive responses at 'noise by the upper story', 'noise by neighborhood house', 'water hammer', and 'noise by family'. Therefore, it is required to plan for preventing deterioration of the dwelling quality by residents' living noise in own unit as well as by neighborhood houses.

A Comparative Study on the Noise Exposed Population for Noise Map Types (소음지도 형태에 따른 소음노출인구 비교 연구)

  • Assessment of noise exposed population is to check the environmental noise level and social influence in order to reduce the risks such as annoyance and disturbance that are generated by environmental noise. Also, this method suggests the preferential noise abatement policy and action plan by accurately finding the area that the noise causes harmful effect to human health. Recently, a noise map, which can predict noise in comprehensive areas, is used for the assessment of noise exposed population, breaking from the methods using existing measures. In particular, countermeasure for the noise can be considered more effectively by using assessment methods of noise exposed population for specific noise levels, areas, and building types which are the main input factors in noise maps. In this study, assessment methods of noise exposed population by using 2 dimensional noise map are compared with those by 3 dimensional noise map.

  • It is difficult to measure a blast noise in the vicinity of tunnel blasting works and the effect of lowering noise changes very highly with types of soundproof materials. So, the main interest of this study focuses on the materials of a soundproof facilities and the method of noise forecast in a near distance. 20 types of the soundproof facilities are established and blast noise is generated using firecracker in a Hume concrete pipe. To analyze the variations of magnitudes of noise and frequency with the soundproof materials and types, the noise and frequency is measured in a short distance next to blast area.

  • The purpose of this study is the improvement of the prediction model of highway noise. It includes the measurement and analysis of predicted noise levels by various programs in types of road and environments. The results of the measurement are compared with the noise levels predicted by improved highway noise prediction model and domestic prediction models, (Improved highway noise prediction model was considered ASJ-2003, ISO-9613 part2 and noise power of road surface types at Korean highway road.)

Creation and Assessment of Korean Speech and Noise DB in Car Environments (자동차 환경에서의 노이즈 DB 및 한국어 음성 DB 구축)

  • Researches into robust recognition in noise environments, especially in car environments, are being carried out actively in speech community. In this paper we will report on three types of corpora that SiTEC (Speech Information TEchnology & industry promotion Center) has created for research into speech recognition in car noise environments. The first is the recordings of 900 Korean native speakers, distributed according to gender, age, and region, who uttered application words in car environments. The second is the collections of mixed noise in 3 car types by model while setting up various noise patterns which can be obtained with the car engine on or off, at different driving speed, and in different road conditions with windows open or closed. The third is the recordings of simulated speech by HATS (Head and Torso Simulator) in car environments with the internal and external noise factors added. These three types of recordings were all made through synchronized 8 channel microphones that are fixed in a car. The creation and applications of these corpora will be reported on in detail.

Study on the Improvement of Lung CT Image Quality using 2D Deep Learning Network according to Various Noise Types (폐 CT 영상에서 다양한 노이즈 타입에 따른 딥러닝 네트워크를 이용한 영상의 질 향상에 관한 연구)

  • The digital medical imaging, especially, computed tomography (CT), should necessarily be considered in terms of noise distribution caused by converting to X-ray photon to digital imaging signal. Recently, the denoising technique based on deep learning architecture is increasingly used in the medical imaging field. Here, we evaluated noise reduction effect according to various noise types based on the U-net deep learning model in the lung CT images. The input data for deep learning was generated by applying Gaussian noise, Poisson noise, salt and pepper noise and speckle noise from the ground truth (GT) image. In particular, two types of Gaussian noise input data were applied with standard deviation values of 30 and 50. There are applied hyper-parameters, which were Adam as optimizer function, 100 as epochs, and 0.0001 as learning rate, respectively. To analyze the quantitative values, the mean square error (MSE), the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and coefficient of variation (COV) were calculated. According to the results, it was confirmed that the U-net model was effective for noise reduction all of the set conditions in this study. Especially, it showed the best performance in Gaussian noise.

An analysis of Noise Conditions in Elementary Schools Located near Airport and Roads (항공 및 도로 교통 소음권내 초등학교의 소음실태분석)

  • This study is a preliminary investigation into improving the environmental quality of schools. The purpose was to clarify the present conditions and reasons of noise in elementary schools located near airports and roads by noise level measurements and questionnaire surveys of subjective responses. fold measurements on equivalent and instantaneous noise levels, indoor and outdoor, were carried out in 3 schools during the periods 11th~ 13th of February and 2nd~ 7th of July,2003. The respondents were 94 teachers working in the 3 schools. The results were as follows. 1) Indoor noise levels of the 3 schools were 36.g~73 dB(A) in winter, and 46.9~ 91 dB(A) in summer. These values were higher than the indoor noise standard of 50 dB(A), except for the average of equivalent noise levels in winter.2) Outdoor noise levels of the schools were 41.1 ~ 101 dB(A) in winter, and 52.4~ 102 dB(A) in summer. These values were generally inappropriate relative to the standard for environmental noise of 65 dB(A). 3) The respondents showed relatively non- positive responses during school hours for interruptions by environmental noise.4) The frequently checked types of environmental noise of the schools were 'airplane noise','surrounding facilities', and 'traffic noise'. The frequently checked types of damage by environmental noise were 'Interrupting school hours' and 'Interrupting business'.

Pattern Analysis of Noise Radiated from Household Refrigerator (가정용 냉장고에서 방사되는 소음의 패턴 분석)

  • The noise pattern of a household refrigerator is dependent on the characteristics of its operating cycle which is repeated with a specific pattern depending on various parameters, such as room temperature and performance of its mechanical parts. Analysis of noise pattern is essential prior to evaluation of sound quality of a refrigerator. In this study, 14 units of refrigerator were classified into 4 types according to noise pattern and sort of mechanical part, which helps to analyze characteristics of refrigerator noise. Sound quality metrics(loudness, sharpness, roughness, and fluctuation strength) were calculated to compare noise pattern of the 4 types of refrigerator. The results of this study can be useful to decide noise performance of refrigerator.
