  • Noise maps can be widely used to estimate the effect of various kinds of existing noise on people and to predict the future noise situation resulting from urban development projects, etc. In particular, countermeasure for the noise can be considered more effectively by using assessment methods of noise exposed population for specific noise levels, areas, and building types which are the main input factors in noise maps. In this study, effective assessment method of noise exposed population is presented by manufacturing facade noise maps depending on Korean house types.

  • Noise is defined to be unwanted (or undesirable) sounds, and it can be subdivided into occupational and environmental noises. The occupational noise is largely emitted from workplaces, but the environmental noise is produced from various sources such as transportation, construction, and even neighborhood. Transportation, particularly road vehicles, has been recognized to play a major role in emitting environmental noise and having adverse effects on urban communities. Considering this issue, this research investigated how severe the impacts of road traffic noise on a variety of land uses in a highly urbanized area, Fulton County, Georgia, United States. Daytime and nighttime road traffic noise maps were derived with Traffic Noise Model that was developed by Federal Highway Administration at United States Department of Transportation. Individual noise maps were overlaid on three-tiered land use type maps in order to evaluate the magnitude of noise impacts on the study area, as a noise exposure assessment. This study found that many land use parcels and buildings were exposed to noise levels exceeding the guideline values of the World Health Organization and the Atlanta Code of Ordinance. Therefore, it would be required to take an action that can protect many urban residents from ill effects of road traffic noise.

  • This paper presents differences of road traffic noise maps were generated by using the draft map and two digital maps with different versions. As a first step, the calculation of the areas of excessive noise exposure was made for the draft map and each digital map version. Subsequently, the areas of excessive noise exposure were compared so as to determine how different from each other. Then, comparison of the populations exposed to excessive noise was also conducted in the same way. It was found that the most accurate noise map was obtained when using the combination of the draft map containing all attribute information and the digital map Ver 2.0. This result indicates that more information on the height and the number of floors of the individual building is required in order to obtain more accurate population exposed to excessive noise, thus creating a more accurate noise map.

  • This Study, as part of a study on the application plan of overseas noise prediction models suitable for making domestic noise maps, analyzed the correlation between the differences in predicted noise levels by individual noise prediction model and surveyed data on General roads and Expressways. Separation distances of 5m and 10m, respectively were set from the ends of the general roads and the expressways at the points of measurements and to check the distribution patterns of sound power levels, the levels were measured at the heights of 1.5m and 3m, respectively. The latest revised versions of the five models (CRTN, RLS90, NMPB, Nord2000, ASJ2008) suggested in The Method of making Noise Maps were used as prediction models, and predicted noise levels were calculated by using commercial software SoundPLAN (Ver 7.1).

  • It is well known that a refrigerant-induced noise is caused by two-phase flow in the indoor unit of a heat pump air-conditioner. Especially when the flow pattern in a pipe is intermittent flow, the irregular noise occurs frequently. But it is very difficult to avoid this kind of the noise for the application of air-conditioner. Therefore, in this research, the flow patterns at two-phase flow state in a pipe of the indoor unit for the air-conditioner are researched using cycle simulator at typical cycle conditions. In order to find the relationship between refrigerant-induced noise and flow pattern, the noise patterns are investigated with respect to the estimated flow pattern from the various flow pattern maps. Base on the estimations of the flow patterns by those maps, the refrigerant-induced noise is evaluated as decreasing tube diameter, which can transit the flow pattern from slug to annular flow.

  • This study presents plans to prevent environmental noise by using noise maps when establishing development projects and targets strategic environment assessments for urban master plans and environmental impact assessment for urban development projects. Strategic environment assessments for urban master plans include the examination of plan validity and location appropriateness in consideration of the effect of environmental noise by comparing development plans with noise maps, and the establishment of long-term measures through comprehensive assessment of present noise conditions and noise effects from development plans. Environmental impact assessments for urban development projects propose enforcement plans, including analysis of present noise conditions around development areas, overall evaluation of present noise conditions and the noise effect from development projects, and selection of optimal measures by comparing noise maps with various alternatives.

  • Urban sound environments consists of various sound sources such as traffic noise, sounds of people and natural sounds affecting the perception of soundscape in a place. However, noise maps based on sound pressure levels could not distinguish different sound sources and limited to represent perception of acoustic environments. Accordingly, soundscape map based on perception of sounds is necessary to provide useful information for the description of the acoustic environment. Therefore, the aims of this study are to examine soundscape perception in different urban contexts including commercial, office, park and residential spaces and to suggest a method for soundscape maps using GIS techniques. Soundscape perceptions and physical characteristics of acoustic environments at various urban contexts were obtained from surveys and acoustic measurements, respectively. The results show that dominant factors affecting soundscape perceptions were different in urban contexts and spatial variations of urban soundscape are closely related to various urban contexts.

  • Noise mapping covers the whole mapping process from the collection of raw data, storage and retrieval of the data for computation/modeling, to the presentation of information related to outdoor sound levels, sound exposure, noise effects or numbers of affected person. This presentation can be in either a graphical or numerical form. In Europe, the Directive 2002/49/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise is now being implemented in the EU Member States. Here, The first maps for major areas are required by mid 2007, and action plans required one year later. These activities are repeated at five yearly intervals and all defined areas are incorporated in the following round of deadlines starting in 2012. The above are minimum requirements and some countries are expected to go further and faster. In this study, present status of domestic and international noise maps has been introduced to implemente the Korean noise map standard. This will help to get more convenient and, more fair result, and produce correct map at domestic level.

  • Analytical model of beat response is derived on a slightly asymmetric ring and is veryfied by experiment. The asymmetric ring is a simplified model used to explain the beat property of a Korean bell. The asymmetric ring has mode pair having slight frequency difference in each radial mode. Each mode pair produces beat phenomenon by the interaction of the two close frequency components. Based on the analytical model, beat maps are first proposed and characteristics of beat on the circumference are detaily explained.

  • This paper proposes an extraction method which extracts two different thematic maps, which have different line thickness from each other in a raster image that contains the two thematic maps. In the proposed method, the depth of each pixel is calculated according to the amount of pixels in its surrounding neighborhood, and then the thinning is performed. By using depth threshold, two thematic maps are first extracted from the thinning result. There are noise images and skeleton disconnection in the lines of each extracted thematic map. Each thematic map extraction is finally completed after removing the noise images and connecting the disconnected lines. Through the experiment, we showed that the proposed method could be used for the extraction of each thematic map of a raster image which included two thematic maps.
