In order to verify the performance of acoustic-based communication systems, a reliable check-up method is needed, which simulates similar oceanic conditions in low cost. One of the possible candidates would be the performance test in an underwater anechoic basin producing no reflecting waves. For this purpose KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) have constructed an underwater semi-anechoic basin from 1999 to 2001. This paper describes its design procedure, especially, how the material and size of the absorbing walls were chosen. Experiments were also performed to check its anechoic quality, Comparing the results with simple analytical results we concluded that the anechoic basin is working well for some selected frequency ranges.
For the purpose of finding out the sound field characteristics in a rectangular cavity, analytical and experimental studies are performed with white noise input. Two-microphone impedance tube method is used to measure the impedances of foamed aluminum. Foamed aluminum is well known metallic porous material which has excellent properties of light weight and high absorbing performance. And predicted impedances of foamed aluminum are compared with measured impedances. The predicted acoustical parameters are applied to the theoretical analysis to predict sound pressure field in the cavity. The measured sound absorption effects are compared with the predicted values for both cases with and without foamed aluminum lining in the cavity of the rectangular enclosure.
Accurate prediction of the transmission loss of dissipative silencers has been considered difficult due to the ambiguity and complexity in the physical properties of sound absorbing materials. Additional difficulty lies in the fact that the analytical calculation of the propagation constant is unknown yet. In this paper. as a first step toward obtaining the Propagation constant and thus predicting the transmission loss, an approximation equation stemming from the wave analysis in the lined interior has been derived. Such an analytical solution and numerical solution using the boundary element method are compared for a two-dimensional simple dissipative silencer under the assumption of the locally reacting sound absorbent.
This paper presents an experimental study on the energy dissipation characteristics of viscous damping wall (VDW). VDW is consisted of a plate floating in a thin case made of steel plated filled with highly viscous silicone oil. Because VDW demonstrates both viscous damping and stiffness characteristics, the viscous resisting force can be expressed as the sum of velocity dependant viscous damping force and displacement dependant restoring force. The viscous resisting force and energy absorbing capacity can be easily adjusted by changing three factors, i.e. viscosity of the fluid, gap distance and area of the wall plates. VDW was tested using a series of harmonic (sinusoidal) displacement history having different frequency and amplitude and the force-displacement relationship was recorded. The relationship between dissipated energy with three factors and the influence of exciting frequency on resisting force were Investigated
A new estimation model of predicting the sound absorption performance for multiple perforated plate sound absorbing system was developed using transfer matrix method. The proposed method was validated by comparing the calculated absorption coefficients of a single layer perforated plate with the values measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method far various porosity and cavity depth. The developed transfer matrix method was further applied to estimate the multiple layer perforated plates and it is shown that the estimated absorption coefficients generally agree well with the measured values.
In ISO 10140-5:2010, defines the reverberation time conditions of the receiving room. The sound absorption side of test specimen is installed in the source room generally. In this study, examined at the change in the sound insulation characteristics for the test specimen of asymmetric structure attached sound absorbing material by changing the installed position. A difference of sound insulation performance was maxium Rw 1 dB, it is preferable to place the larger sound absorption area in source room.
This paper is concerned with design and control of semi-active tuned mass damper. The equipment consists of permanent magnet and coil. If current flowing in coil is changed, the natural frequency of the semi-active tuned mass damper is changed. In previous research, a current flowing in coil was changed manually. In this time, we design the feedback control system. The experiment proceed that the excitation frequency is shifted from 4Hz to 9Hz. The result of experiment proves that semi-active tuned mass damper is better than passive tuned mass damper in performance of absorbing vibration.

A direct boundary element method(DBEM) is developed for thin bodies whose surfaces are rigid or compliant. The Helmholtz integral equation and its normal derivative integral equation are adopted simultaneously to calculate the pressure on both sides of the thin body, instead of the jump values across it, to account for the different surface conditions of each side. Unlike the usual assumption, the normal velocity is assumed to be discontinuous across the thin body. In this approach, only the neutral surface of the thin body has to be discretized. The method is validated by comparison with analytic and/or numerical results for acoustic scattering and radiation from several surface conditions of the thin body; the surfaces are rigid when stationary or vibrating, and part of the interior surface is lined with a sound-absorbing material.
A practical method of predicting the sound absorption coefficient for multiple perforated-plate sound absorbing system was developed using transfer matrix method. The proposed method was validated by comparing the calculated absorption coefficients of a single layer perforated plate with the values measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method for various porosity and spacing of the perforated plate. The developed transfer matrix method was further applied to estimate the multiple layer perforated plates and it is shown that the estimated absorption coefficients agree well with the measured values.
Various types of perforated sheets have been applied on the surface of porous absorptive materials in order to protect dust and to enhance interior design. This study examines experimentally influences on absorptive characteristics according to the shape of perforation which includes rectangular and resonator type as well as circular holes. The measured results shows that the resonance frequency can be changed by the shape of perforation as well as the eccentricity of holes.
