Simulation and Experimental Methods for Media Transport System: Part I, Three-Dimensional Sheet Modeling Using Relative Coordinate

  • This research presents a three-dimensional modeling technique for a flexible sheet. A relative coordinate formulation is used to represent the kinematics of the sheet. The three-dimensional flexible sheet is modeled by multi-rigid bodies interconnected by out-of-plane joints and plate force elements. A parent node is designated as a master body and is connected to the ground by a floating joint to cover the rigid motion of the flexible sheet in space. Since the in-plane deformation of a sheet such as a paper and a film is relatively small, compared to out-of-plane deformation, only the out-of-plane deformation is accounted for in this research. The recursive formulation has been adopted to solve the equations of motion efficiently. An example is presented to show the validity of the proposed method.

  • The recent large-spatial structures are frequently made from light-weight structural system and it has a good mechanical efficiency and uses new materials. The large space is made by light-weight structural system using tension members mainly, and generally it is called a soft structure. The cable dome structures which are a soft structures are very flexible, the stresses and nodal coordinates of other members are changed when we control the stress of one member. Therefore, we have to do two kind of works for effective and accurate construction of the cable dome structures. The first work is making a working scenario to complete the final objective form and the second is revising constructional errors occurred in process of the actual works. These works are called constructional analysis. At this time, we have to consider geometric nonlinearity to reflect the sensitivity by the initial stresses of cable dome structures, and constructional analysis comes down to a nonlinear problem after all. In this study, we try to approach the constructional analysis of the cable dome structures using the numerical method, and then verify it.

직사각형판(直四角形板)의 접수진동(接水振動) (The Vibration of an Elastic Rectangular Plate in a Fluid)

  • It is a well-known phenomenon that, in the case of vibrations of an elastic body in a fluid such as water, the presence of the surrounding fluid has the effect of lowering the natural frequencies of the vibration as compared with those in air or vacuum on account of the increased inertia, i.e. added mass. In this report, defining the mass increase factor as the ratio of added mass to vibration mass of the body in air, the author investigated the mass increased factor of an elastic plate vibrating in the fluid. It is assumed that the edges of the plate are simply supported, and that the surrounding fluid is an infinite ideal one. For the problem formulation the elliptical cylindrical coordinate system is adopted, so that a rectangular plate may be represented by a sheet degenerated from an elliptical cylinder. By virtue of the coordinate system adopted, plates which are chordwisely finite and lengthwisely contineous could directly be treated, but plates which are chordwisely finite in both directions could not be treated directly. For the latter, hence, plates which are chordwisely finite and lengthwisely semi-finite are investigated as an appropriate approximation. Some examples of the mass increase factor are numerically calculated for the fundamental mode and modes of zero or one nodal line in each direction with the range of the aspect ratio from 1 to 10 or more.

Validation of Ultrasound and Computed Tomography-Based Risk Stratification System and Biopsy Criteria for Cervical Lymph Nodes in Preoperative Patients With Thyroid Cancer

  • Objective: This study aimed to validate the risk stratification system (RSS) and biopsy criteria for cervical lymph nodes (LNs) proposed by the Korean Society of Thyroid Radiology (KSThR). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included a consecutive series of preoperative patients with thyroid cancer who underwent LN biopsy, ultrasound (US), and computed tomography (CT) between December 2006 and June 2015. LNs were categorized as probably benign, indeterminate, or suspicious according to the current US- and CT-based RSS and the size thresholds for cervical LN biopsy as suggested by the KSThR. The diagnostic performance and unnecessary biopsy rates were calculated. Results: A total of 277 LNs (53.1% metastatic) in 228 patients (mean age ± standard deviation, 47.4 years ± 14) were analyzed. In US, the malignancy risks were significantly different among the three categories (all P < 0.001); however, CT-detected probably benign and indeterminate LNs showed similarly low malignancy risks (P = 0.468). The combined US + CT criteria stratified the malignancy risks among the three categories (all P < 0.001) and reduced the proportion of indeterminate LNs (from 20.6% to 14.4%) and the malignancy risk in the indeterminate LNs (from 31.6% to 12.5%) compared with US alone. In all image-based classifications, nodal size did not affect the malignancy risks (short diameter [SD] ≤ 5 mm LNs vs. SD > 5 mm LNs, P ≥ 0.177). The criteria covering only suspicious LNs showed higher specificity and lower unnecessary biopsy rates than the current criteria, while maintaining sensitivity in all imaging modalities. Conclusion: Integrative evaluation of US and CT helps in reducing the proportion of indeterminate LNs and the malignancy risk among them. Nodal size did not affect the malignancy risk of LNs, and the addition of indeterminate LNs to biopsy candidates did not have an advantage in detecting LN metastases in all imaging modalities.

동력분산형 고속철도 주행성능 동역학 해석을 위한 기반기술 개발 (Development of fundamental technology for dynamic analysis of the high speed EMU (Electric Multiple Unit))

  • The development of a new railway vehicle is under progress through the Next Generation High-Speed Rail Development Project in Korea. Its aim is to develope fundamental technology of the vehicle that can run over 400km/h. The new distributed traction bogie system, 'HEMU'(High-speed Electric Multiple Unit), will be used and is different from that of previously developed high speed railway vehicles. Previous vehicles adopted push-pull type system, which means one traction-car drives rest all of the vehicle. Due to the difference, investigation on dynamic behavior and its safety evaluation are necessary, as a part of verification of the design specification. In the paper, current progresses of researches are presented. And the High-Speed Railway vehicle system is evaluated for a dynamic characteristic simulation. Proper dynamic models including air-suspension system, wheel-rail, bogie and car-body is developed according to the vehicle simulation scenario. The basic platform for the development of dynamic solver is prepared using nodal, modal coordinate system and wheel-rail contact module. Operating scenario is prepared using commercial dynamic analysis program and used for development of dynamic model, which contains many parts such as carbodies, bogies and suspension systems. Furthermore, international safety standard is applied for final verification of the system. Finally, the reliability of the dynamic model will be verified with test results in the further researches. This research will propose a better solution when test results shows a problem in the parts and elements. Finally, the vehicle that has excellent performance will be developed, promoting academic achievement and technical development.

  • 본 논문에서는 기하학적 특성을 고려한 케이블 네트 형상설계 방법론을 제시하고, 트러스 링 그리고 케이블 네트의 구조 유연도를 고려한 반사판 안테나의 케이블 네트워크 형상 실효성을 검증한다. 기하학적 비선형성을 고려한 케이블 네트의 유한요소 모델을 개발한다. 경계조건의 하중에 따른 형상변형 해석을 통하여, 케이블 네트의 형상 설계변수 특성을 제시 한다. 프레임 요소를 이용하여 전개형 트러스 링 구조를 모델링하고 정적 하중 해석을 수행한다. 전개된 링 구조에 가해지는 장력에 의해 케이블 네트 반사판은 정확한 형상을 유지하게 된다. 가해지는 장력, 케이블 네트 그리고 트러스 링 구조의 유연도를 고려하여, 케이블 네트워크 형상설계에 반영하고 최종 형상을 제시한다.

  • 대한민국은 지난 반세기간 성장위주의 정책을 통하여서 경제적, 문화적, 사회적으로 급속한 발전을 이루었다. 하지만 거점개발방식으로 인하여서 비대한 도시와 낙후된 지역이 생겼다. 이에 따라서 국가에서는 많은 낙후지역 개발정책들을 펼쳐왔으나 많은 문제점들을 가졌다. 그 이유는 소관 부처가 많고 사업의 종류가 다양함으로 인해 나타난다. 또한 개발 우선순위가 객관적인 지표에 근거하지 않고 각 지자체에 분배 식으로 사업이 수행되는 형태이기 때문이다. 기존의 연구된 지역에 대한 지표연구는 도 또는 시, 군등 대단위에서만 분석되어있고 소단위 지역의 사업의 순서를 선정하는데 어려움을 가진다. 이에 따라서 지역에 대한 지표선정을 통해 소규모 낙후지역의 효율적인 개발을 위한 의사결정 지원 시스템로 사용하고자 한다.

횡 방향 플립 칩 초음파 접합 시 혼의 공차변수가 시스템의 진동에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Tolerance Parameters of the Horn on the Vibration of the Thermosonic Transverse Bonding Flip Chip System)

  • Thermosonic flip chip bonding is an important technology for the electronic packaging due to its simplicity, cost effectiveness and clean and dry process. Mechanical properties of the horn and the shank, such as the natural frequency and the amplitude, have a great effect on the bonding capability of the transverse flip chip bonding system. In this research, two kinds of study are performed. The first is the new design of the clamp and the second is the effect of tolerance parameters to the performance of the system. The clamp with a bent shape is newly designed to hold the nodal point of the flip chip. The second is the effect of the design parameters on the vibration amplitude and planarity at the end of the shank. The variation of the tolerance parameters changes the amplitude and the frequency of the vibration of the shank. They, in turn, have an effect on the quantity of the plastic deformation of the gold ball bump, which determined the quality of the flip chip bonding. The tolerance parameters that give the great effect on the amplitude of the shank are determined using Taguchi's method. Error of set-up angle, the length and diameter of horn and error of the length of the shank are determined to be the parameters that have peat effect on the amplitude of the system.

Verification and validation of isotope inventory prediction for back-end cycle management using two-step method

  • This paper presents the verification and validation (V&V) of a calculation module for isotope inventory prediction to control the back-end cycle of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The calculation method presented herein was implemented in a two-step code system of a lattice code STREAM and a nodal diffusion code RAST-K. STREAM generates a cross section and provides the number density information using branch/history depletion branch calculations, whereas RAST-K supplies the power history and three history indices (boron concentration, moderator temperature, and fuel temperature). As its primary feature, this method can directly consider three-dimensional core simulation conditions using history indices of the operating conditions. Therefore, this method reduces the computation time by avoiding a recalculation of the fuel depletion. The module for isotope inventory calculates the number densities using the Lagrange interpolation method and power history correction factors, which are applied to correct the effects of the decay and fission products generated at different power levels. To assess the reliability of the developed code system for back-end cycle analysis, validation study was performed with 58 measured samples of pressurized water reactor (PWR) SNF, and code-to-code comparison was conducted with STREAM-SNF, HELIOS-1.6 and SCALE 5.1. The V&V results presented that the developed code system can provide reasonable results with comparable confidence intervals. As a result, this paper successfully demonstrates that the isotope inventory prediction code system can be used for spent nuclear fuel analysis.
