The subjects of this study were 415 children in the first to third grade selected from 4 primary schools. Among them, 212 children belong to the experimental group, and 203 children were in the control group. The program was provided respectively to first, third and fifth grade children for 2, 4 and 6 teaching-hours from 2013.1.1 to 2013.12.19. To measure the effects of the program, the knowledge and attitudes on/toward smoking, self-concept were used as the research tools. Before and after program-implementation, there were significant differences in knowledge of smoking, but no differences in attitudes and self-concept. A smoking prevention program for primary school children should be applied step-by-step in conjunction with the regular education curriculum. In addition, the program should aim for long-term effects rather than short-term effects.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of smoking warning phrases on cigarette packages on students' attitudes toward smoking. Two research hypotheses were established to verify the effectiveness of the cigarette warning phrase. In order to verify the hypothesis, 129 students of Chung - Ang University were used. In order to investigate the difference of attitude toward smoking according to the presence or absence of smoking warnings, two types of questionnaires were prepared. Statistical program SPSS 18.0 was used and frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were performed. The presence or absence of witnessing the smoking warnings were found to have a statistically significant effect on the smoking attitude score. Sex and parental smoking did not have any significant effect.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional status of serum minerals, ceruloplasmin, and ferroxidase activity in female adolescent students according to their smoking status. The subjects were 87 non-smokers and 88 smokers, who were female high school students. The smokers were divided into tow groups by smoking status, 35 light smokers(pack-year<1) and 53 smokers(pack-year$\geq$1). The serum concentrations of 6 minerals were determined by ICP emission spectroanalyzer. The serum concentration of ceruloplasmin and ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity were determined. All data were statistically analyzed by SAS PC package program. The serum minerals concentrations of all subjects were in a normal range. There were significantly differences in the concentrations of serum copper, zinc, magnesium, and phosphorus by smoking status while there were no significant differences in the concentrations of serum iron and manganese by smoking status. Furthermore there were no significant differences in the ceruloplasmin concentration and ferroxidase activity by smoking status. In conclusion, smoking status altered the serum levels of some minerals in healthy young women. The minerals levels in light smokers with relatively short pack-year(pack-year<1) were altered compared to those in non-smokers or smokers. This finding seemed to be consistent with the results of previously published data related to antioxidant vitamin and lipid peroxide levels. However further research is needed to clarify these findings in female adolescent smokers.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the amount and duration of smoking on gingival symptoms in adolescents. Methods: We used the web-based survey data of youth health behaviors from 2016 conducted by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The subjects of the study were 67,983 middle and high school students. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS Ver 20.0 program, and complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze gingival symptoms according to short- or long-term smoking habits. Results: In subjects with short-term smoking habits, there was no significant difference in gingival symptoms according to the smoking amount. However, after adjusting for socioeconomic characteristics and oral health behaviors in subjects with long-term smoking habits, a heavy smoking amount (${\geq}0.52PY$) had a 1.25 times higher effect than a light smoking amount (<0.52 PY) on gingival symptoms. Long-term heavy smoking (${\geq}0.52PY$) and low daily tooth-brushing frequency in high school students were factors affecting gingival symptoms. Conclusions: When conducting a project on the oral health of adolescents, it is argued that specific investigations and measures should be set up regarding health behavior factors, such as the amount and duration of smoking among adolescents.
Purpose : This was aimed to investigate the effects of empirical smoking prevention program on the knowledge of the harmfulness of smoking, attitude to smoking, smoking temptation among female high school students. Methods : This study used nonequivalent control group pre and post test design. The subjects were recruited from the first and second grade at the two girls' high schools located in Ulsan city, and randomly assigned to two groups(113 in the experimental group and 117 in the control). The intervention was both the events such as nonsmoking promulgation and experiential learning programs and student-oriented educational sessions(once a week for six weeks). Data was analyzed with X2 test, t-test and ANCOVA. Results : The mean knowledge was 12.5 for pretest and 13.7 for posttest in the experimental group, and 12.7 and 13.4 in the control group, retrospectively. The mean attitude was 71.0 for pretest and 72.2 for posttest in the experimental group, and 72.3 and 72.6 in the control group, retrospectively. The mean temptation was 15.0 for pretest and 14.7 for posttest in the experimental group, and 13.9 and 14.0 in the control group, retrospectively. There's no difference in the change of the knowledge of the harmfulness of smoking, attitude to smoking, smoking temptation between experimental and control groups. Conclusion : As the possible reasons, the subjects already had sufficient knowledge on the harmfulness of smoking, the research questionnaires were too plain to get any difference, the effect of intervention was too small to show a difference in such as short-term, and finally, there were many external factors. Hence, we recommend further studies with appropriate questionnaire for longer time.
Purpose. This study was conducted from the period of April 12th, 2017 to April 26th, 2017. The questionnaires were distributed among a group of 76 adults aged 20 years or older, who participated in the prevention program of the department of dental hygiene at Busan Metropolitan City. The negative questionnaire was finally analyzed. Methods. The SPSS program was used for analysis of this study. The general characteristics of the subjects were t-test and one-way, ANOVA(by Scheffe post-test) for a PHP index (Patient Hygiene Performance index) according to frequency analysis, general characteristics, smoking and drinking behavior, and dietary behavior. Results. As a result of an examination of the PHP index(Patient Hygiene Performance index) ac- cording to smoking and drinking behavior, the amount of alcohol drunk was statistically higher than that of 'soju that was not drunk'(P<0.05). As a result of the PHP index (Patient Hygiene Performance index) according to dietary behavior, 'vegetarians' were statistically higher than 'Carnivorous oriented' individuals (P<0.05). Moreover, individuals who regularly 'drank almost no water' were statistically significantly higher than those who 'drank water steadily'.(P<0.05). Conclusion. As a result, appropriate management is required for oral health of the patient, Oral health education is needed to systematically consider smoking, drinking, and eating habits when taking into consideration the individual oral environment.
By organizing the results of study questioned 1,620 dentists working nationwide in 2005, we concluded the followings.
1. The smoking rate of dentist is 29.69%.
2. 60.9% of current dentist smokers responded that they started smoking at the age of 20-24, during their dental school ages.
3. 67.41% of respondents have no idea of cyber antismoking campaign launched by Korean Dental Association, and 94.07% of respondents didn t receive formal education about smoking cessation.
4. 59.01% of respondents want to educate patients about smoking cessation in dental clinics but couldn t help putting it off for practical reasons. The reasons include their busy office hour(36.30%), difficulties in collecting proper smoking cessation documents(25.10%), and lack of their own knowledge in renunciation of smoking. (18,83%)
5. As dental healthcare personnels, they agreed with their status and duty of leading role in national renunciation of smoking. (R>80%)
6. 83.34% of dentists agreed that if educational antismoking program is arranged by Korean Dental Association, they should receive the education.
In health promotion program, the fear of gaining weight is often given as a reason for giving up smoking cessation by the participants. The purpose of this study is to compare drinking habit, exercise and BMI distribution according to smoking habits. The subjects of this study were 83 industrial workers in Gu-mi. Data collection was conducted from Sep. 18th to Sep. 24th 2000. The method was self-reported questionnaire survey, consisted of general characterisics, smoking habits and its relevant questions. The results are as follows : 1. Fifty-nine percents of the subjects were currently smoking. 2. Smoking habits were significantly related with drinking(p=.049). More smokers(81.6%) reported drinking habit than non-smokers(61.7%). 3. Forty-one point two percents of the non-smoker and 34.7% of the smoker perceived their body type as "fat". 4. The mean values of BMI were 22.0 in smokers with 1-9 cigarettes/day, 24.2 in 10-19 cigarettes/day smokers and 24.0 in smokers with over 20 cigarettes/day. There are no statistically significant differences in BMI among smoking habits. 5. BMI among different smoking habit groups was not significant different in age, drinking habit, exercise, and smoking habit.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of an auricular acupressure (AA) program for smoking cessation in high school students from 2015 to 2017. Methods: The study investigated 12 high school students who had been smokers. Subjects were treated for three years. Each program was composed of five AA treatments. Average daily smoking and adverse reactions were checked for one week before each procedure. The AA was administered weekly at the endocrine point, lung point, throat point, nasal fossae point, bronchial tube point, and mouth point. Results: The mean number of cigarettes smoked per day after each year of treatment significantly decreased from 5.33±3.58 to 3.54±2.08 in 2015 (p=0.046). However, it increased from 5.75±2.30 to 6.00±3.61 in 2017 (p=0.80). The number of cigarettes smoked before treatment was found to be higher than the number of cigarettes after treatment in the previous year. No significant results were obtained from analysis of the change in the amount of smoking within each year. Conclusion: Social influence, such as the subject's academic stress and peer relationships, may have been a major factor in the change in the amount of smoking. Although the AA did not show a strong effect in smoking cessation, it appears to have value as a supplementary means of stopping smoking.

Objectives: This study was performed to examine the effective health education measures and health education programs for college students and also investigated the demands of restriction on drinking and smoking behavior in public area at the school level. Methods: The data were collected from 446 students of five universities located in Seoul and analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 program. Results: 1) Current drinkers were average 87.7% (male 90.1%, female 85.3%) and binge drinker was 68.4% (male 76.5%, female 60.2%). Among all drinkers, 19.4% drank more than eight times per month. As for the rate of smoking, 50.9% among the male student, and 12.1% among females were smokers. Among all smokers. the largest group (41.5%) smoked between >$11{\sim}20$ cigarettes per day. Many of the students started smoking in their middle schools (male 29.8%, female 51.5%). It implies that smoking prevention programs need to be emphasized in these schools. 2) The analysis of the correlation between drinking and smoking shows that no smoking students who drank were 66.2%, but abstainer who is smoker were only 5.7%(p=0.004). Alcohol consumption frequency and amount of smokers were higher than those of nonsmokers (p=0.000). The rate of attempts to reduce drinking was 38.1%, mainly for health reason. More than 34.5% of smoking student had made attempts to quit smoking, but succeeded only 16.9%. 3) As for the needs of moderate drinking and smoking cessation education, 67.8% among female students and 53.6% among male demand special education programs. About effective health education measures on drinking and smoking, 49.3% of drinkers and 35.2% of smokers had an inclination for health educator, and the next were video, campaign and pamphlet. 4) The largest group (45.0%) of respondents had agreed to regulate on drinking behavior, and especially 74.5% of them wants to ban the practice in most public area in school. 35.7% among female students and 27.0% among male desired to extend the non-smoking area on whole campus. The health policy for college students, through various ways, such as education, counseling service, and special program on orientation, should be employed. For public health perspectives, university and college community had to institute the detailed enforcement regulation on drinking and smoking.
