The effluent discharge standards of industrial wastewater has become more stringent since 2003. Many industrial wastewater treatment plants has been upgraded to advanced treatment facilities. There are high concentrations of nitrate(>200 mg/L) and ammonium(>50 mg/L) nitrogen in the acrylic fiber wastewater of H textile Co. Wastewater from acrylic fiber industry containing acrylonitrile, which may affect the subsequent biological treatment process. Manufacturing of acrylic fiber also produces shock loadings. Excessive acrylonitrile and polymer debris produced in the polymerization process was screened, coagulated with CaO and settled down. A preaeration system was added to treat this high pH effluent to remove volatile organic compound and ammonia nitrogen by the air stripping effect. it was found that nitrification rate was not sufficient in the Anoxic/Oxic(AO) process. One denitrification tank was converted to nitrification reactor to extend HRT of nitrification. Nitrification rate of ammonia nitrogen was promoted from 32% to 67% by this modification and effluent nitrogen concentration was well satisfied with the effluent standards since then.

In this study, nitrogen removal characteristics of SBR3 process, which is two-sludge system of sequencing batch reactor(SBR) type, were investigated, with comparison of those of SBR1 process, which is conventional SBR process, and SBR2 process, which was designed to enhance denitrification efficiency through step-feeding of wastewater, using domestic wastewater. SBR3 process of two-sludge type can perform external nitrification, on which nitrification occurs in separated reactor, and enhanced denitrification using biosorbed organics. In the results with domestic wastewater, T-N removal efficiency of SBR3 process was better than those of SBR1 and SBR2 processes. It was observed that bigger difference of T-N removal efficiency between SBR3 process and SBR1 & SBR2 processes was showed at low C/N ratio than that at high C/N ratio resulting from more efficient use of organics by biosorption mechanism in denitrification of SBR3 process than those of SBR1 and SBR2 processes. In addition, T-N removal efficiency of SBR3 process according to influent T-N loading rate was better than those of SBR1 and SBR2, even though influent T-N loading rate of SBR3 process was higher than that of SBR1 and SBR2 process resulting from operation of SBR3 process in short hydraulic retention time(HRT) by external nitrification.
Kinetic analysis was important to develope the biological nutrient removal process effectively. In this research, anoxic-anaerobic-aerobic system was operated to investigate kinetic behavior on the nutrient removal reaction. Nitrification and denitrification were important microbiological reactions of nitrogen. The kinetics of organic removal and nitrification reaction have been investigated based on a Monod-type expression involving two growth limiting substrates : TKN for nitrification and COD for organic removal reaction. The kinetic constans and yield coefficients were evaluated for both these reactions. Experiments were conducted to determine the biological kinetic coefficients and the removal efficiencies of COD and TKN at five different MLSS concentrations of 5000, 4200, 3300, 2600, and 1900 mg/L for synthetic wastewater. Mathematical equations were presented to permit complete evaluation of the this system. Kinetic behaviors for the organic removal and nitrification reaction were examined by the determined kinetic coefficient and the assumed operation condition and the predicted model formulae using kinetic approach. The conclusions derived from this experimental research were as follows : 1. Biological kinetic coefficients were Y=0.563, $k_d=0.054(day^{-1})$, $K_S=49.16(mg/L)$, $k=2.045(day^{-1})$ for the removal of COD and $Y_N=0.024$, $k_{dN}=0.0063(day^{-1})$, $K_{SN}=3.21(mg/L)$, $k_N=31.4(day^{-1})$ for the removal of TKN respectively. 2. The predicted kinetic model formulae could determine the predicted concentration of the activated sludge and nitrifier, investigate the distribution rate of input carbon and nitrogen in relation to the solid retention time (SRT).

This study induced biological denitrification and nitrification via a biofiltration process with the view of removing nitrogen from land-based fish farm effluent. To achieve this, we operated an aquaculture nitrogen-removal system that includes a denitrification and nitrification reactor [working volume 40 L, flow rate 64.8 L, HRT (hydraulic retention time) 14.8 h, HRT considering recycling of NOx 7.4 h]. In the continuous process, the nitrification rate of ammonium nitrogen exceeded 90% at a steady state and the denitrification efficiency exceeded 80% with recycling to a pre-anoxic reactor. In addition, the pH in the final effluent was lower with a low influent water alkalinity averaging 100 mg/L (as $CaCO_3$). For effective denitrification reactions, carbon must be supplied via particulate organic matter (POM) hydrolysis because of the low C/N (carbon/nitrogen) ratio in the water.
Biological nitrogen removal, using a continuous flow packed-bed reactor (CPBR) in a consecutive nitrification and denitrification process, was evaluated. An apparent decline in the nitrification efficiency coincided with the steady increase in $NH_4{^+}$-N load. Sustained nitrification efficiency was found to be higher at longer empty bed contact times (EBCTs). The relationship between the rate of alkalinity consumption and $NH_4{^+}$-N utilization ratio followed zero-order reaction kinetics. The heterotrophic denitrification rate at a carbon-tonitrogen (C/N) ratio of >4 was found to be >74%. This rate was higher by a factor of 8.5 or 8.9 for $NO_3{^-}$-N/volatile solids (VS)/day or $NO_3{^-}-N/m^3$ ceramic media/day, respectively, relative to the rates measured at a C/N ratio of 1.1. Autotrophic denitrification efficiencies were 80-90%. It corresponds to an average denitrification rate of 0.96 kg $NO_3{^-}-N/m^3$ ceramic media/day and a relevant average denitrification rate of 0.28 g $NO_3{^-}$-N/g VS/day, were also obtained. Results presented here also constitute the usability of an innovative porous sulfur ceramic media. This enhanced the dissolution rate of elemental sulfur via a higher contact surface area.
As aeration is an energy-intensive process, its control has become more important to save energy and to meet strict effluent limits. In this study, predictive aeration control based on the respirometric method has been applied to the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process. The variation of the respiration rate by nitrification was great and obvious, so it could be a very useful parameter for the predictive aeration control. The maximum respiration rate due to nitrification was about 60 mg O2/L·h and the maximum specific nitrification rate was about 7.5 mg N/g MLVSS·h. The aeration time of the following cycle of the SBR was daily adjusted in proportion to that which was previously determined based on the sudden decrease of respiration rate at the end of nitrification in the respirometer. The aeration time required for nitrification could be effectively predicted and it was closely related to influent nitrogen loadings. By the predictive aeration control the aerobic period of the SBR has been optimized, and energy saving and enhanced nitrogen removal could be obtained.
In order to design the improvement process for T-N removal, the treatment process of Suyoung, Gangbyeon, and Noxan sewage treatment plants (STP) in Busan was anlayzed. Suyoung STP shows a T-N removal efficiency of about 69.8% with MLE(Modified Ludzack ettinger) and A2O+MBR. However, it is necessary to improve the process to maintain over DO of 1 mg/L and is required to install a flow control tank to minimize the rainfall effect. Gangbyun STP shows a about 70.2% T-N removal efficiency with A2O+GFF(gravity fiber filtration). However, in order to improve T-N removal efficiency, it is needed to install MLE process to treat recycle water. Noksan STP shows a T-N removal efficiency of about 71.0% with MLE+Chemical treatment and shows stable T-N concentration in effluent. However, it is required a toxic chemical management process because bad wastewater flows into the STP, also is necessary a process improvement in order to increase internal recycling ratio. Especially, it is required a process improvement to increase HRT of nitrification tank because Suyoung and Gangbyeon STPs shows low nitrification efficiency during winter season.

In this study, the effects of ammonium concentration ($117.5-1155.0mg-N{\cdot}l^{-1}$), nitrite concentration ($0-50.0mg-N{\cdot}l^{-1}$), and temperature ($15-35^{\circ}C$) on nitrification performance and its functional genes (amoA-arc, amoA-bac, hao) in an enriched consortium inoculated with humic acid were determined. Notably, the maximum nitrification rate value was observed at $315mg-N{\cdot}l^{-1}$ of ammonium, but the highest functional gene copy numbers were obtained at $630mg-N{\cdot}l^{-1}$ of ammonium. No inhibition of the nitrification rate and functional gene copy numbers was observed via the added nitrites. The optimum temperature for maximum nitrification performance was observed to be $30^{\circ}C$. The amoA-bac copy numbers were also greater than those of amoA-arc under all test conditions. Notably, amoA-arc copy numbers and nitrification efficiency showed a positive relationship in network analysis. These results indicate that ammonium-oxidizing archaea and bacteria play important roles in the nitrification process.
Recently, interests to remove nitrogen in the nitritation process have increased because of its economical advantages, since it could be a short-cut process to save both oxygen for nitrification and carbon for denitrification compared to a typical nitrification. However, the kinetics related with the nitritation process has not yet been fully understood. Furthermore, many useful models which have been successfully used for wastewater treatment processes cannot be used to estimate effluent nitrite concentration for evaluating performance of the nitritation process, since the process rate equations and population of microorganisms for nitrogen removal in these models have been set up only for the condition of full nitrification. Therefore, the present study was conducted to estimate an effluent nitrite concentration in the nitritation process with a concept of enzymatic inhibition kinetics based on long-term laboratory experiments. Using a nonlinear least squares regression method, kinetic parameters were accurately determined. By setting up a process rate equation along with a mass balance equation of the nitrite-oxidizing step, an effluent nitrite concentration in the nitritation process was then successfully estimated.
Removal rate of nitrogen compound containing swine wastewater was 97 percent in case of high loading rate treatment of swine wastewater at studies for process development using soil microorganism. Minimum hydraulic retention time(HRT) for nitrification process was 11 days and solid retention time was 25 days. Nitrification was between 5 and 11 days but this time $NO_2-N$ was remained. Reactor condition was injured to nitrosomonas according to pH, $NO_2\;^--N$, and $NH_3\;^--N$ concentration but this condition was recover to pH controlling.
