R-curve, of three kinds of silicon nitride-based ceramics were measured, using single edge notched beam (SENB) method at room and at elevated temperatures, up to $1200^{\circ}C$. Stable fraacture was seen on ceramic materials with SENB specimens if the machined notch is deep enough, even though the crack resistance did not increase with crack length. Hot pressed silicon nitride did not show the rising R-curve behavior at room temperature, but it showed some rising at $1000^{\circ}C$ and above. Si3N4 reinforced with SiC whiskers showed no rising behavior at room and elevated temperatures, as it has smaller grain size, compare to the monolithic specimen. Gas pressure sintered silicon nitride had very large and elongated grains, and it showed rising R-curve even at room temperature. However, it showed some creep behavior at $1200^{\circ}C$ and the calculated R-curve on this condition did not show a good result. We cannot apply this technique on this condition for obtaining the R-curve.

Aluminum nitride, which has outstanding properties such as high thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity, has been received a great attention as a substrate and packaging material of semiconductor devices. Since aluminum nitride has a high sintering temperature of 2173 K and its properties depends on the impurity level, it is necessary to synthesize high-purity and nano-sized aluminum nitride powders for the applications. In this research, we synthesized high purity aluminum nitride nanopowders from aluminum using RF induction thermal plasma system. Sheath gas (NH3) flow was controlled to establish the synthesis condition of high purity aluminum nitride nanopowders. The obtained aluminum nitride nanopowders were evaluated by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, FTIR and N-O analysis.

Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets have been used in a wide variety of applications because of their high magnetic flux density. So, demand for neodymium has been increasing in worldwide. In this study, an electrowinning process was performed in $LiF-NdF_3-Nd_2O_3$ high temperature molten salts. However, a corrosion resistant material for use in the molten salt must be found for stable operation because of the harsh corrosion environment of the electrowinning process. Therefore, for this paper, boron nitride(BN), aluminum nitride(AlN), and silicon nitride($Si_3N_4$) were selected as protective and structural materials in the high temperature electrolyte. To investigate the characteristics of BN, AlN, and $Si_3N_4$, in molten salts, materials were immersed in the molten salts for 24, 72, 120, and 192 hours. Also, surface condition and stability were investigated by SEM and EDS and corrosion products were calculated by HSC chemistry. As a result, among BN, AlN, and $Si_3N_4$, AlN was found to show the best protective material properties.
Mechanochemical processing (MCP) involves several high-energy collisions of powder particles with the milling media and results in the increased reactivity/sinterability of powder. The present paper shows results of mechanochemical processing (MCP) of silicon nitride powder mixture with the relevant sintering additives. The effects of MCP were studied by structural changes of powder particles themselves as well as by the resulting sintering/densification ability. It has been found that MCP significantly enhances reactivity and sinterability of the resultant material: silicon nitride ceramics could be pressureless sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$. Nevertheless, a degree of a silicon nitride crystal lattice and powder particle destruction (amorphization) as detected by XRD studies, is limited by the specific threshold. If that value is crossed then particle's surface damage effects are prevailing thus severe evaporation overdominates mass transport at elevated temperature. It is discussed that the cross-solid interaction between particles of various chemical composition, triggered by many different factors during mechanochemical processing, including a short-range diffusion in silicon nitride particles after collisions with other types of particles plays more important role in enhanced reactivity of tested compositions than amorphization of the crystal lattice itself. Controlled deagglomeration of $Si_3N_4$ particles during the course of high-energy milling was also considered.

High-purity aluminum nitride nanopowders were synthesized using an RF induction thermal plasma instrument. Ammonia and nitrogen gases were used as sheath gas to control the reactor atmosphere. Synthesized AlN nanopowders were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, BET, FTIR, and N-O analyses. It was possible to synthesize high-purity AlN nanoparticles through control of the ammonia gas flow rate. However, additional process parameters such as plasma power and reactor pressure had to be controlled for the production of high-purity AlN nanopowders using nitrogen gas.

In this study, TiN-coated cBN (cubic-structure boron nitride) powders were successfully synthesized by a sol-gel method using titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) and by controlling the heat treatment conditions. After the sol-gel process, amorphous nano-sized TiOx was uniformly coated on the surface of cBN powder particles. The obtained TiOx-coated cBN powders were heated at 1,000~1,300℃ for 1 or 6 h in a flow of 95%N2-5%H2 mixed gas. With increasing temperature, the chemical composition of the TiOx coating layer changed in the order of TiO2→Ti6O11→Ti4O7→TiN due to reduction of the Ti ions. The TiN coating layer was observable in the samples heated at 1,200℃ and appeared as the main phase in the sample heated at 1,300℃. The resulting thickness of the TiN coating layer of the sample heated at 1,300℃ was approximately 45~50 nm.
Due to their unique combination of properties, Si-based ceramics, such as silicon carbide (SiC), silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) and silicon oxide ($SiO_2$ as fused silica), have a range of industrial applications in fields such as the chemical industry, aluminum manufacturing, oil and gas production and solar cell production. For each materials group, examples of typical applications from various industry sectors are presented while taking into account the property fingerprint.
By gel-casting, the silicon-polymer green bodies were prepared for silicon nitride ceramics, sintered by microwave gas phase reaction. Considering the viscosity and the idle time of slurries, we decided the operational conditions of related processes, and the optimum concentrations of raw materials powders, organic monomers, cross-linker, dispersant, initiator, and catalyst. So we could get the machinable green bodies, having about 50 MPa of bending strength without cracks by selecting drying conditions carefully.
Gas pressure sintering (GPS) of reaction bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) was performed using $Lu_2O_3-SiO_2$ additive and the properties were compared with those of specimens prepared using high purity $Si_3N_4$ powder. The relative density of RBSN and compacted $Si_3N_4$ powder were 68.9 and 47.1%, and total linear shrinkage after sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$ were 14.8 and 42.9%, respectively. High nitrogen partial pressure (5MPa) was required during sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$ in order to prevent the decomposition of the nitride and to promote the formation of SiC. The relative density and 4-point bending strength of RBSN and $Si_3N_4$ powder compact were 97.7%, 954MPa and 98.2%, 792MPa, respectively, after sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$. The sintered RBSN also showed high fracture toughness of 9.2MPam$^{1/2}$.

Carbon nitride has drawn broad interdisciplinary attention in diverse fields such as catalyst, energy storage, gas adsorption, biomedical sensing and even imaging. Intensive studies on carbon dioxide (CO2) capture using carbon nitride materials with various nanostructures have been reported since it is needed to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere against climate change. This is mainly due to its tunable structural features, excellent physicochemical properties, and basic surface functionalities based on the presence of a large number of -NH or -NH2 groups so that the nanostructured carbon nitrides are considered as suitable materials for CO2 capture for future utilization as well. In this review, we summarize and highlight the recent progress in synthesis strategies of carbon nitride nanomaterials. Their superior CO2 adsorption capabilities are also discussed with the structural and textural features. An outlook on possible further advances in carbon nitride is also included.
