  • Tracheal collapse is a common respiratory disease in dogs. There are many ways to treat tracheal collapse, one of which is the use of an intraluminal stent. In this study, we divided 21 dogs into two groups and implant conventional stents and new nitinol stents. Comparison of two groups was based on following, feature of stent fracture, form of stent migration, clinical sign improvement, complication and prognosis. Approaching was established via C-arm under spontaneous breathing and placing a stent at the site of collapse. Using radiographic images, determine stent size accurately. For a comparison of identical condition, all intraluminal stents were placed 10 mm caudal from larynx to 10 mm cranial from carina. In this study, new nitinol stents improve the problems of conventional stents and may be effective in the treatment of tracheal collapse in small dogs.

  • The medical device industry is changing rapidly by applying the latest scientific and technological advancements. In particular, with the development of biotechnology, the proportion of in vitro diagnostic medical devices that diagnose diseases by analyzing body fluids such as blood and implant medical devices that can replace the role of human tissues and organs has recently increased rapidly In order to educate and supply manpower in the newly changing medical device industry, the development of a new practical training course is necessary. In this paper, we develop and report a hands-on training course using nitinol stents and a model stent introducer. The model stent introducer for this practical training can be easily made using raw materials used by the manufacturer, and the stents used in the training were provided by the stent manufacturing company. Through this practicum, students can experience part of the work of an actual medical device company and understand engineering theories applied to medical devices through practicum. In order for the Korean medical device industry to become a global leader, it is necessary to develop practical training courses through close cooperation between universities and industry.

  • A new type of stent was invented using a Nitinol wire. The hoop strength of the new stent was found to be 2 times larger than that of the Cragg or Memotherm stents. However, the longitudinal flexibility of the new stent was inferior to both the Cragg and Memotherm stents. This new stent seems to be useful or the treatment of stenosis with straight configuration, but need to be improved or use in tortuous stenotic region. The stent was applied to the patients with esophargeal stenosis and showed a good result.

  • Shape memory alloy, Nitinol is used for medical stent, artificial human joint, antenna of artificial satellite, fire door, temperature sensor...etc. It is important for some nitinol product high precision and clean surface. In this study, we experiment about deburring of edge and surface of nitinol work piece with micro electrolytic-deburring. We made an observation in case electric currents are $1A{\sim}4A$, above 5A and each machining times.

  • Purpose To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the newly designed open-cell type self-expandable nitinol stent (NiTi-stent) for peripheral arteries. Materials and Methods Twenty-eight limbs of 14 minipigs were randomly assigned to the NiTistent group or conventional nitinol stent group. Stents were symmetrically implanted into the iliac arteries of each animal using carotid artery approach and were observed for 1 month (n = 5) and 6 months (n = 9). The angiographic lumen diameter (ALD), late lumen loss, angiographic stenosis, histomorphometric lumen area, neointimal area, and area stenosis were analyzed and compared between the groups. Results Stent migration, stent fracture, or thrombus formation were not observed in either group. At the 1-month follow-up, the neointimal area (p = 0.008) and area stenosis (p = 0.016) were significantly smaller in the NiTi-stent group than in the control group. At the 6-months followup, the NiTi-stent group showed significantly larger ALD (p = 0.014), less late lumen loss (p = 0.019), less angiographic stenosis (p = 0.014), larger lumen area (p = 0.040), and smaller neointimal area and area stenosis (p = 0.004 and p = 0.014, respectively) compared with the control group. Conclusion The NiTi-stent is as safe and effective as the conventional nitinol stent and induces less neointimal hyperplasia in a minipig iliac artery model.

  • Nitinol alloy (TiNi) has been widely used in vascular stents. To improve the blood compatibility of Nitinol alloy, its surface was chemically modified in this study. Nitinol was first coated with gold, then chemisorbed with L-cysteine (C/N), and followed by grafting of zwitter ionic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (PEG-$N^+-SO_3{^-}$) to produce TiNi-C/N-PEG-N-S. The zwitter ionic PEG grafted on the Nitinol surface was identified by ATR-FTIR, ESCA and SEM. The hydrophilized surface was proven by the decrease of water contact angle. In addition, from the blood compatibility tests such as protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and blood coagulation time, the surface-modified TiNi alloy exhibited a better blood compatibility as compared to the untreated Nitinol control. These results indicated a feasibility of synergistic effect of hydrophilic PEG and antithrombotic zwitter ion.

  • Cerebral aneurysm is common lesion among adult population. Current methods for treating the disease have several limitations. Inspired by fern leaves, we have developed a new stent, called leaf stent, which can provide a tailored coverage at the neck of an aneurysm and thus prevent the blood from entering the aneurysm. It alone can be used to treat the cerebral aneurysm and therefore overcomes problems existing in current treating methods. The paper focuses on the numerical simulation of the leaf stents. The mechanical behaviour of the stent in various designs has been investigated using the finite element method. It has been found that certain designs provide adequate radial force and have excellent longitudinal flexibility. The performance of certain leaf stents is comparable and even superior to those of the commercially available cerebral stents such as the Neuroform stent and the Enterprise stent, commonly used for stent assisted coiling, while at the same time, providing sufficient coverage to isolate the aneurysm without using coils.

  • Phase transformation, superelastic characteristics and variation of surface residual stress were studied for Nitinol shape memory alloy through application of UNSM technology, and life extension methods of stent were also studied by using elastic resilience and corrosion resistance. Nitinol wire of ${\phi}1.778$ mm showed similar surface roughness before and after UNSM treatment, but drawing traces and micro defects were all removed by UNSM treatment. It also changed the surface residual stress from tensile to compressive values, and XRD result showed less intensive austenite peak and clear martensite and additional R-phase peaks after UNSM treatment. Fatigue resistance could be greatly improved through removal of surface defects and rearrangement of surface residual stress from tensile to compressive state, and development of surface modification system to improve not only bio-compatability but also resistance to corrosion and wear will make it possible to develop vascular stent which can be used for circulating system diseases which run first cause of death of recent Koreans.

  • Although a tracheal stent can be an option for inoperable tracheal stenoses there still are some troublesome side effects including overgranulation from foreign body irritation restenosis and patient's discomfort associated with the procedure. We report a successful case of a retrievable stent made of self-expandable 'shape memory' metal and polyurethane in a 24 year old female patient with respiratory distress and tight stenosis in the trachea and left main bronchus, The stent was inserted following a balloon dilatation and was successfully removed on the 7th days after the procedure. She regained a normal active life without any repiratory symptoms and a follow-up of 8 months showed satisfactory results.
