  • Co and Ni catalysts supported on $Al_2O_3$ for partial oxidation of methane producing hydrogen were synthesized using impregnation to incipient wetness. The activities of these catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane was investigated at 1 atm and $CH_4/O_2=2.0$ in the temperature range of $450{\sim}650^{\circ}C$. The reaction activity of $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts with different loading was investigated. And the beneficial effects of Ni addition to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and the promotional effects of Ce and La addition to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ were investigated. These catalysts were characterized by XRD and SEM/EDX. Comparing catalyst loadings, 10 wt% Co and 10 wt% Ni were found to be optimal at the experimental conditions. The 10 wt% $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and 10 wt% $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalysts in partial oxidation of methane showed $CH_4$ conversions and CO selectivity close to the thermodynamic equilibrium levels, but showed lower $H_2$ selectivity than equilibrium level. The addition of Ni to $Co/Al_2O_3$ exhibited higher $H_2$ selectivity but beneficial effect was not observed in the $CH_4$ conversion. Addition of Ce to $Co/Al_2O_3$ and addition of La to $Ni/Al_2O_3$ a improved the $CH_4$ conversion level and $H_2$ selectivity.

  • In order to improve the efficiency of the water splitting system for hydrogen production, the high overvoltage in the electrochemical reaction caused by the catalyst in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) must be reduced. Among them, transition metal-based compounds are attracting attention as catalyst materials that can replace precious metals such as platinum that are currently used. In this study, nickel foam, an inexpensive metal porous material, was used as a support, and Fe-doped β-Ni(OH)2 microcrystals were synthesized through a hydrothermal synthesis process. In addition, in order to improve OER properties, changes in the shape, crystal structure, and water splitting characteristics of Fe-Mo co-doped β-Ni(OH)2 microcrystals synthesized by co-doping with Mo were observed. The changes in the shape, crystal structure, and applicability as a catalyst for water splitting were examined.

  • The catalytic hydrolysis reactivities of dinuclear nickel (II) complex, ${\mu}-aquapentaaqua[{\mu}-3,6-bis(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyridazine]chlorodinickel\;(II)$ trichloride trihydrate (APNT) for bis(p-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) as a DNA model compound were investigated. The dissociation constants of APNT were $pKa_1=7.9$ and $pKa_2=9.6$, respectively. The hydrolysis rate constant of BNPP compound by APNT was showed the rate enhancement of about 370,000 times in the case of none catalyst at pH 7.0 and $50^{\circ}C$. Based on the findings, we proposed the catalytic cycle for the hydrolysis of BNPP by APNT complex. The metal ions of dinuclear nickel (II) complex significantly enhance the transfer rate of phosphoryl group in the catalytic process and the water molecules as nucleophile and proton transfer agent act in different steps.

  • Thermodynamic analysis on carbon dioxide reforming of methane was performed using a computer program which can handle condensed species in the products, and the reforming experiments were conducted over $Al_2O_3$, $La_2O_3$, ZSM-5, MCM-41, KIT-1 supported nickel catalysts, and a commercial ICI 46-1. It was estabished that a system which consists of $CH_4$, $CO_2$, CO, $H_2$, $H_2O$, and C is appropriate for theoretical equilibrium calculations and addition of water vapor or oxygen was found to diminish the contribution of carbon dioxide in reforming. Silicate molecular sieve-supported catalysts such as Ni/ZSM-5, Ni/MCM-41, Ni/KIT-1 were effective for high $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ conversions as well as for high CO yield. Coke formation was suppressed when CaO was added as a promoter. Ni/Ca/KIT-1 which contains 10% Ni with 3% Ca showed conversion approaching equilibrium levels above $650^{\circ}C$ and maintained constant activity over 20 h. Despite increased space velocity, relatively high conversion and CO yield were observed.

  • Catalysts were prepared by using incipient wetness impregnation method with 17 wt% Ni on a support ($SiO_2-Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-ZrO_2$, $SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, MgO) and the catalytic activity in the reductive amination of ethanol with ammonia in the presence of hydrogen was compared and evaluated. The catalysts used before and after the reaction were characterized using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, ethanol-temperature programmed desorption (EtOH-TPD), isopropanol-temperature programmed desorption (IPA-TPD), and hydrogen chemisorption etc. In the case of preparing $ZrO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ supports, the small amount of Si dissolution from the Pyrex reactor surface provoked the formation of mixed oxides $SiO_2-ZrO_2$ and $SiO_2-Y_2O_3$. Among the catalysts used, $Ni/SiO_2-Y_2O_3$ catalyst showed the best activity, and this good activity was closely related to the highest nickel dispersion, and low desorption temperature in EtOH-TPD and IPA-TPD. The low catalytic activity on Ni/MgO catalysts showed low activity due to the formation of NiO-MgO solid-solutions. In the case of $Ni/TiO_2$, the reactivity was low due to the low nickel metal phase due to strong metal-support interaction. In the case of using a support as $SiO_2-Y_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-ZrO_2$, and $SiO_2$, the selectivities of ethylamines and acetonitrile were not significantly different at similar ethanol conversion.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases and SF6 as an additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The geometries of as-grown carbon materials were investigated with increasing the reaction temperature as the increment of $25^{\circ}C$ from $650^{\circ}C$ up to $800^{\circ}C$. At $650^{\circ}C$, the embryos for carbon coils were formed. With increasing the reaction temperature to $700^{\circ}C$, the coil-type geometries were developed. Further increasing the reaction temperature to $775^{\circ}C$, the development of wave-like nano-sized coils, instead of nano-sized coils, and occasional appearance of micro-sized carbon coils could be observed. Fluorine in $SF_6$ additive may shrink the micro-sized coil diameter via the reduction of Ni catalyst size by fluorine's etching role. Finally, the preparation of the micro-sized carbon coils having the smaller coil diameters, compared with the previously reported ones, could be possible using $SF_6$ additive.

  • The partial oxidation of methane is one of important processes for hydrogen production. As a membrane reactor, palladium-silver (Pd-Ag) alloy membrane prepared by electroless plating technique was employed for partial oxidation of methane. The experimental variables were reaction temperature, $O_2/CH_4$ mole ratio, $CH_4$ feed rate, and $N_2$ sweep gas flow rate. The methane conversions increased with the reaction temperatures in the range of 350 to $730^{\circ}C$. The highest methane conversion and CO selectivity were obtained at the condition of $O_2/CH_4$ mole ratio of 0.5 and $730^{\circ}C$ using commercially available nickel/alumina catalyst. The Pd-Ag membrane reactor showed higher methane conversions, 10~40% higher, compared to those in a traditional reactor.

  • In the present work, Carbon supported Pt100, Pt80Sn20, Pt80Ni20 and Pt80Sn10Ni10 electrocatalysts with different atomic ratios were prepared by ethylene glycol-reduction method to study the electro-oxidation of ethanol in membraneless fuel cell. The electrocatalysts were characterized in terms of structure, morphology and composition by using XRD, TEM and EDX techniques. Transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed a decrease in the mean particle size of the catalysts for the ternary compositions. The electrocatalytic activities of Pt100/C, Pt80Sn20/C, Pt80Ni20/C and Pt80Sn10Ni10/C catalysts for ethanol oxidation in an acid medium were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The electrochemical results showed that addition of Ni to Pt/C and Pt-Sn/C catalysts significantly shifted the onset of ethanol and CO oxidations toward lower potentials. The single membraneless ethanol fuel cell performances of the Pt80Sn10Ni10/C, Pt80Sn20/C and Pt80Ni20/C anode catalysts were evaluated at room temperature. Among the catalysts investigated, the power density obtained for Pt80Sn10Ni10/C (37.77 mW/cm2 ) catalyst was higher than that of Pt80Sn20/C (22.89 mW/cm2 ) and Pt80Ni20/C (16.77 mW/ cm2 ), using 1.0 M ethanol + 0.5 M H2SO4 as anode feed and 0.1 M sodium percarbonate + 0.5 M H2SO4 as cathode feed.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The characteristics (formation density and morphology) of as-grown carbon coils according to the injection stage of $SF_6$ gas incorporation were investigated. A continuous injecting of $SF_6$ gas flow could give rise to many types of carbon coils-related geometries, namely linear tub, micro-sized coil, nano-sized coil, and wave-like nano-sized coil. However, the limitation of the geometry as the nano-sized geometries of carbon coils could be achieved by the incorporation of $SF_6$ in a short time (1 min) during the initial deposition stage. A delayed injection of a short time $SF_6$ gas flow can deteriorate the limitation of the geometries. It confirms that the injection time and its starting point of $SF_6$ gas flow would be very important to determine the geometries of carbon coils.

  • Conjugated linoleic acid methylester was synthesized through isomerization of linoleic acid methylester by using heterogeneous catalysts. As for heterogeneous catalysts, Ni supported zeolite type catalysts were used. H zoelite Y (HY) were ion exchanged with KCl aqueous solution to synthesize K zeolite Y (KY), and with impregnation method, Ni supported zeolite catalysts were synthesized. Catalysts were used after pre-treatment by using hydrogen. HY catalysts showed a high conversion at low temperatures; but a low selectivity for conjugation reaction. KY catalysts showed a low conversion at low temperatures; but a similar conversion with HY catalysts at high temperatures while a high selectivity at low temperatures. As a result, 4 wt% Ni/KY720 recorded the high conjugation yield of 63.4% at 220.
