Purpose: This study aimed to identify correlations between the status of the umbilical cord and neonatal health status. Methods: In total, 172 newborns were enrolled who were admitted to the newborn nursery with a gestational age of 35 weeks or older and a body weight of 2 kg or above. Data were collected on the basic personal information of the newborns, the diameter and soft tissue status of the umbilical cord, and neonatal health status after birth. Analyses were performed using t-test, analysis of variance, χ2 test, and Fisher exact test. Results: Umbilical cord diameter exhibited a statistically significant difference by sex (t=2.71, p=.007). A thin umbilical cord diameter was associated with a 1-minute Apgar score less than 8 points (t=2.47, p=.015) and with being transferred to the intensive care unit (t=2.45, p=.015). Poor soft tissue status of the umbilical cord was associated with a 1-minute Apgar score of less than 8 points (χ2=16.68, p<.001) and with oxygen being supplied (χ2=4.81, p=.028). Conclusion: Assessing the umbilical cord diameter and status in newborns is an important tool for evaluating neonatal health status after birth, and this point also underscores the importance of professionals' careful observations in the newborn nursery.

This study was conducted to identify the effects of baby care using dolls on nursing students' major satisfaction, class satisfaction, and knowledge of newborn care. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group, pretest-posttest design was used. The subjects of the study were 95 nursing college students who agreed to participate. The control group (n=47) received lecture education consisting of watching newborn videos while the experimental group (n=48) received a practical education involving caring for a doll resembling an infant. Data were collected from March to May, 2019 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ2-tests, and t-tests with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. The major satisfaction score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, but it was not statistically significant (t=1.64, p=.107). The score for class satisfaction differed significantly between the experimental group and control group (t=2.08, p=.043). The knowledge of newborn care score for the experimental group was higher than that for the control group, and there was a statistically significant difference (t=-5.82, p<.001). Overall, the results show that baby care using a doll has positive effects on class satisfaction and knowledge of newborn care. In the future, it will be necessary to develop and apply effective teaching methods in line with the times.
Purpose: This study was designed to explore the relationship of situational meaning with maternal self-esteem in mothers with high risk newborn. Method: The subjects of this study were 82 mothers with high risk newborn. Data were collected using a translated Family Meaning Attribution Scale and Maternal Self-Report Inventory. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson Correlation Coefficients and Stepwise Multiple Regression. Result: The average score of the situational meaning in high risk newborn mothers was 64.0l(possible score is between 0-96) and the average score of each item was 1.98. The average score of the maternal self-esteem in high risk newborn mothers was 81.96(possible score is between 26-104) and the average score of each item was 3.15. No significant differences were found in situational meaning according to general characteristics except whether it was a planned pregnancy or not. No significant differences were found in maternal self-esteem according to general characteristics except disease or admission experience during pregnancy. There was significant positive correlation between situational meaning and maternal self-esteem. Conclusion: It is necessary for nurses to provide high risk newborn mothers with care for improving situational meaning that is attributed to the mothers. It can be helpful to improve maternal self-esteem and in the end it will facilitate the maternal transition in mothers with high risk newborn.

Purpose: This study was done to identify content of prenatal education and to examine differences in prenatal education, knowledge, and attitude of nulliparous South Korean women. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used with 134 conveniently recruited nulliparous women. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires. Results: Average number of institutional prenatal education programs was 5.96 at clinics, 4.31 at health care centers, and 0.49 at hospitals. Women participated in an average 5.78 out of the 35 prenatal education contents: 15 types of prenatal and delivery, 10 postpartum self-care, and 10 parenting. Score for knowledge was 7.57out of 10. Women who participated in prenatal education (n=72) reported significantly higher scores in knowledge (t=2.71, p=.008) than women who did not participate (n=62). The average score for attitude was 7.22 out of 10. Nulliparous women over 36 weeks of gestational age had significantly higher scores for attitude (t=2.38, p=.019) than women under 36 weeks. There were significant positive correlations between newborn care knowledge and postpartum care self-efficacy (r=.26, p=.026), and newborn care knowledge and parenting confidence (r=.25, p=.034). Conclusion: Results indicate that policy is needed to increase participation in prenatal education and to establish strategies for health care centers and hospitals to provide prenatal education.
Purpose: This study was to explore the postnatal care experiences among first time Chinese immigrant mothers living in Korea. Methods: Data were collected by focus group interviews with 12 first time Chinese immigrant mothers utilizing 3 focus groups. After obtaining written informed consent from all participants, each session of the focus group was audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed by content analysis to identify major themes. Results: Four major themes for postnatal care experiences were extracted from the data as follows. 1) Range over traditional, modern, Korean or Chinese postnatal care, 2) Struggle with newborn care, 3) Another struggle with breastfeeding, and 4) Difficulties in becoming a mother as an immigrant. Conclusion: Based on their postpartum care experiences, it is concluded that participants requested more professional practical and individualized education/training for successful breastfeeding and newborn care. Health care providers need to develop and implement integrated support and mentoring programs that include information and peer support system for the first time Chinese immigrant mothers living in Korea. This would decrease the difficulties of becoming a mother.

Lethargy in newborns usually indicates central nervous system dysfunction, and many conditions such as cerebrovascular events, infections, and metabolic diseases should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Nonketotic hyperglycinemia is an autosomal recessive error of glycine metabolism, characterized by myoclonic jerks, hypotonia, hiccups, apnea, and progressive lethargy that may progress to encephalopathy or even death. Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis is a rare condition with various clinical presentations such as seizures, cerebral edema, lethargy, and encephalopathy. Here, we report the case of a newborn infant who presented with progressive lethargy. An initial diagnosis of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis was followed by confirmation of the presence of nonketotic hyperglycinemia.
Early extra-uterine development of the newborn infant has the potential for clarifying important questions of nature and care taking environment. In this study, tactile and auditory stimulation is used on .a group of infants to determine the effects of their response. Infants were tested by EKG at 24∼48 hrs after birth ana all they are free from complication. Stimuli presented were-touch and sound (40dB, 70dB and 40∼70dB). The result of the study were as follows: 1) The heart rate was seen to depend on their sleep-wake state. (light sleep ; 125/min, eyes: open & motor activity increase ; 151/min crying ; 185/min). 2) The heart rate affected by tactile & auditory stimulus. The heart rate response was acceleration above the prestimulus level. (tactile, 231min increase, auditory ; 16∼21/min increase), and heart rate change was seen to depend on prestimulus rate. (γ=.73) 3) There was a decrease in heart rate when they were soothe. (touch ; 24.8sec, 21/min decrease, pacifier ; 14.5sec, 26/min decrease) and significant difference in time between touch and pacifier (t= 1.76, p<0.05). This result support the evaluation of newborn infant's sensory abilitics, and has even begin to influence changes in nursing care. But systemic monitoring of newborn infants response would. further define.
Purpose: To investigate the relationships among mother's perception of her own newborn, her caring-confidence level, and her child-rearing attitude; and to provide data for developing effective nursing education programs on maternal newborn care. Method: Explorative survey questionnaires were completed by 159 married mothers of newborns from November 2003 to March 2004. Data were analyzed using SPSS/Win 10.0 by t-test and Pearson's Correlation coefficient. Result: The mean scores of the mother's perception of her own newborn, her caring- confidence level, and her child-rearing attitude were .26, 3.13, and 3.43 respectively. There was a positive correlation between mother's perception of her own newborn and her child-rearing attitude. There was a significant correlation between mothers caring-confidence level and her child-rearing attitude. Score of caring-confidence was significantly different depending on the availability of helper and history of delivery. Conclusion: Availability of helper and history of delivery significantly affected mothers caring-confidence. This in turn, along with mothers perception of her own newborn, enhanced mothers child-rearing attitude. Thus, an effective education for mothers should include these factors.
Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of a newborn care education promotion program on child-rearing knowledge, child rearing stress, and child rearing self-efficacy of immigrant pregnant women. Methods: The subjects were 23 immigrant pregnant women who voluntarily participated in the study in D city. The program was provided, once a week for 90 minutes for a period of 3 weeks. The outcome variables were child-rearing knowledge, child-rearing stress, and child rearing self-efficacy. Data was collected from April 4 to June 24, 2011, through self-administered questionnaires. Results: The program significantly improved child rearing knowledge, child rearing stress, and newborn care self-efficacy for married immigrant pregnant women who participated in the program compared to women who did not participate. Conclusion: The results suggest that the reproductive health promotion program has an affirmative effect on child-rearing knowledge, child rearing stress, and child rearing self-efficacy of married immigrant pregnant women. It is suggested, therefore, that the educational program be presented to married immigrant woman at public health centers to enhance their confidence in child-rearing.
