Mycena subpiligera sp. nov., a Symbiotic Species from China Associated with the Seed Germination of Gastrodia elata

  • Mycena subpiligera, a new taxon in sect. Fragilipedes that can strongly enhance the germination efficiency of Gastrodia elata seeds, was discovered in subtropical areas of China. As revealed by a morphological comparison with related Mycena species as well as maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) regions of nuclear ribosomal RNA, the new taxon can be distinguished from phenotypically similar and phylogenetically related species. Optimal cultural conditions for M. subpiligera basidiomata are reported, and the germination rate of the new species is compared with that of M. citrinomarginata.

A New Taxon of Goodyera (Orchidaceae): G. × tamnaensis (신분류군 탐라사철란(난과))

  • We describe a new taxon of Goodyera (Orchidaceae), G. ${\times}$ tamnaensis N.S. Lee, K.S. Lee, S.H. Yeau & C.S. Lee, sp. nov., from Jeju Island. This taxon is presumed to be a hybrid between G. schlechtendaliana and G. velutina based on several morphological characteristics, i.e., leaf venation, a patterned leaf surface and raised leaf epidermal cells, the color of the flower and the bract, the lateral sepal shape, and the hair length. The morphological characteristics and illustrations of the species based on the holotype are provided together with photographs of the habitat.

A new taxon of Hymenophyllum (Hymenophyllaceae): H. wrightii f. serratum (처녀이끼속의 신분류군: 구름처녀이끼(처녀이끼과))

  • A new taxon, Hymenophyllum wrightii f. serratum C.S. Lee & K. Lee (Hymenophyllaceae), forma nov. was collected and described from forests in Mt. Halla, Jeju-do, Korea. This taxon, H. wrightii f. serratum C.S. Lee & K. Lee (vernacular name: 'Gu-reum-cheo-nyeo-i-kki') was distinguished from H. wrightii f. wrightii by having smaller leaves, broader basal part of leaf blade, broad-ovate laminae, larger sori and serrate margins of lips of involucres. The new taxon's name is based on serrate margin shape of the lips. A Korean name, 'Gu-reum-cheo-nyeo-i-kki', was newly given based on its habitat. Descriptions and its photograph in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of Hymenophyllum from Korea.

Some Free-Living Heterotrophic Flagellates from Marine Sediments of Tropical Australia

  • The diversity of heterotrophic flagellates was examined at marine sediments around Cape Tribulation, Australia. The species described belong to the Alveolates, Apusomonadiae, Cercomonadida, Choanoflagellida, Cryptomonadida, Diplomonadida, Euglenozoa incertae sedis, Kathablepharidae, Kinetoplastida, Pedinellids, Stephanopogonidae, Stramenopiles, Stramenopiles incertae sedis, Thaumatomonadidae and Protista incertae sedis. Among the 51 species from 38 genera encountered in this study is one new taxon: Glissandra similis n. sp., and two new names are introduced: Goniomonas abrupta (Skvortzov 1924) nomen nodum and Cercomonas skvortzovi (Skvortzov 1977) nomen nodum. There was little evidence for endemism because most flagellates including one new taxon described here have been reported.

First record of Hypodematium squamuloso-pilosum Ching (Hypodematiaceae) from Korea (한반도 미기록 식물: 흰금털고사리(금털고사리과))

  • A new unrecorded species, Hypodematium squamuloso-pilosum Ching (Hypodematiaceae), previously known only in China, was newly found on the rocks of a limestone mountain in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwondo, Korea. This taxon is distinguished from H. glanduloso-pilosum (Tagawa) Ohwi, reported as a species of Hypodematium in Korea based on linear lanceolate scales on the rhizome and a stipe base, white long hairs throughout the leaves, rarely reddish brown curly linear scales on the stipe, and oblong-lanceolate basal pinna. This taxon was most similar to H. hirsutum based on the plant height, rhizome, scale shape and size, sori position, and indusium shape. A new Korean name, 'Huin-geum-teol-go-sa-ri', was given based on the long white hair throughout. Descriptions and illustrations of this taxon and a photograph of its habitat are provided from Korea.

  • The natural populations of Lycopus lucidus Turcz. ex Benth. var. hirtus Regel (Lamiaceae) were found in Gangwon province, Korea. This taxon was mainly distinguished from L. lucidus Turcz. ex Benth. var. lucidus by having multicellular hairs on the stem and leaves. However, the delimitation of this taxon from the typical plants of this variety (var. lucidus) was never assessed and the existence of this taxon was obscure in Korea. So, we provide a detailed morphological description of this taxon, as well as its geographical distribution and habitat.

  • During the systematic study of the genus Bidens L. (Asteraceae) in Korea, we found two specimens collected from Bujeon Plateau, Hamgyungnam-do, which are recognized as a new taxon (B. radiata Thill. var. radiata) for the flora of Korea. The Korean name for this taxon is newly designated as 'Sam-ip-gu-wa-ga-mak-sa-ri'. The close relative of this taxon is B. radiata Thill. var. pinnatifida (Turcz. ex DC.) Kitam., but B. radiata var. radiata can be distinguished from B. radiata var. pinnatifida by having mostly 3-parted and lanceolate lobe of leaf. The key for varieties of B. radiata is given.

Survey of Busan Oligochaeta earthworms supported by DNA barcodes

  • An earthworm survey of Busan metropolitan area unearthed a dozen taxa in four families (including Enchytraeidae). Members of mostly common, cosmopolitan earthworm species-complexes were: Drawida cf. koreana Kobayashi, 1938, Amynthas cf. corticis (Kinberg, 1867), Aporrectodea trapezoides (Dug$\grave{e}$s, 1828) and Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826). Also found were Amynthas hupeiensis (Michaelsen, 1895), A. masatakae (Beddard, 1892) and Metaphire ryunome Blakemore, 2012 - the latter a new Korean record. New taxa are: moniligastrid Drawida songae yeongdo subsp. n.; megascolecid Amynthas carnosus roki subsp. n. which is compared to nominal taxon A. carnosus (Goto and Hatai, 1899) from Japan, to A. carnosus monstriferus (Kobayashi, 1936) stat. n. from Korea and to A. lichuanensis Wang and Qiu, 2005 stat. n. from China; plus lumbricid Eisenia japonica vaga subsp. n. deemed an objectively-based molecular taxon on its unique DNA COI gene barcode. Restoration of Eisenia xanthurus (Templeton, 1836) for E. andrei is mooted (in Appendix).

  • The herb Pedicularis cheilanthifolia var. albida (Pennell) P. C. Tsoong is reported and collected for the first time from the Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand. The species was seen growing along a glacial stream in an alpine region between 4,100 and 4,400 m asl. Morphological characteristics of the species were examined and processed for herbarium deposition. To simplify taxon identification, a brief taxonomic description and illustration of the taxon are provided.
