  • Untethered nodes in mobile ad-hoc networks strongly depend on the efficient use of their batteries. In this paper, we propose a new metric, the drain rate, to forecast the lifetime of nodes according to current traffic conditions. This metric is combined with the value of the remaining battery capacity to determine which nodes can be part of an active route. We describe new route selection mechanisms for MANET routing protocols, which we call the Minimum Drain Rate (MDR) and the Conditional Minimum Drain Rate (CMDR). MDR extends nodal battery life and the duration of paths, while CMDR also minimizes the total transmission power consumed per packet. Using the ns-2 simulator and the dynamic source routing (DSR) protocol, we compare MDR and CMDR against prior proposals for power-aware routing and show that using the drain rate for power-aware route selection offers superior performance results.

  • The existing route re-establishment methods which intend to extend the lifetime of the network attempt to find a new route in order not to overly consume energy of certain nodes. These methods outperforms other routing algorithms in the network lifetime aspect because that they try to consume energy evenly for the entire network. However, these algorithms involve heavy signaling overheads because they find new routes based on flooding method and route re-establishment occurs often. Because of the overhead they often can not achieve the level of performance they intend to. In this paper, we propose a new route selection algorithm which takes into account costs for the packet transmission and the route re-establishment. Since the proposed algerian considers future route re-establishment costs when it first find the route, it spends less energy to transmit given amount of data while evenly consuming energy as much as possible. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing route re-establishment methods in that after simulation it has the largest network energy which is the total summation of remaining energy of each node, the smallest energy consumed for route re-establishment, and the smallest energy needed for maintaining a session.

  • The routing protocols designed for wired networks can hardly be used for mobile ad-hoc networks due to limited bandwidth of wireless transmission and unpredictable topological change. Recently, several routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks have been Proposed. However, when theme protocols are applied to support real time services like multimedia transmission, they still have problems in ad-hoc networks, where the topology changes drastically. In this paper, we propose a new route selection algorithm which selects the most reliable route that is impervious to route failures by topological changes by mobile hoots. For reliable route selection, the concept of virtual zone (stable zone and caution zone) is proposed. The zone is located in a mobile node'transmission range and determined by mobile node's mobility information received by Global Positioning System (GPS). The proposed algorithm is applied to the route discovery procedure of the existing on-demand routing protocol, AODV, and evaluated by simulation in various traffic conditions and mobility patterns.

  • In this paper, we present a MMPR (Minimizing the Maximum Used Power Routing) Algorithm in a MANET (Mobile ad hoc network) by modifying the route selection algorithm in well-known routing MANET protocol. In the previous route selection algorithms, the metric for cost function is the minimal hop which does not consider the energy status. MMPR uses the metric with used energy The node that want to know the route for some destination begins calculating the route cost function with alpha which is the maximum used energy in the known route. If the new route that contains the node whose used energy is greater than previous known alpha is known to the node that want to send a packet in some moment, the probability of selecting the new route is lower. Experimental results with MMPR show higher performance in both the maximum used energy and the number of dead nodes than that of the CMMBCR (Conditional Max-Min Battery Routing).

  • Network mobility (NEMO) based on mobile IP version 6 has been proposed for networks that move as a whole. Route optimization is one of the most important topics in the field of NEMO. The current NEMO basic support protocol defines only the basic working mode for NEMO, and the route optimization problem is not mentioned. Some optimization schemes have been proposed in recent years, but they have limitations. A new NEMO route optimization scheme-involving a combination of the optimized route cache protocol (ORC) and reverse routing header (RRH) and the use of a quota mechanism for optimized sessions (OwR)-is proposed. This scheme focuses on balanced performance in different aspects. It combines the ORC and RRH schemes, and some improvements are made in the session selection mechanism to avoid blindness during route optimization. Simulation results for OwR show great similarity with those for ORC and RRH. Generally speaking, the OwR's performance is at least as good as that of the RRH, and besides, the OwR scheme is capable of setting up optimal routing for a certain number of sessions, so the performance can be improved and the cost of optimal routing in nested NEMO can be decreased.

  • The West-East Nature Gas Pipeline is a great project in China. Advanced remote sensing technology combined with GIS and GPS is used to select the favorable plan from various possible routes through interpreting the information of topographic landform, regional geology, disaster geology, traffic conditions and nature environment from remote sensing images. There are a lot of changes in geographical and environmental factors along such pipelines due to the rapid development in China. Image maps produced from new satellite data can identify these changes and be used successfully not only on route-selection studies but also on in situ investigation, together with GPS. Results from detail analysis provide necessary information and parameters for plan, design and construction of the pipeline and they are also the basic data for the pipeline database. The set of techniques has been applied on planning and designing several pipelines successfully.
