In this paper, we investigated the throughput of a cognitive radio network where two primary frequency channels (PCs) are sensed and opportunistically accessed by N secondary users. The sharing sensing member (SSM) protocol is introduced to sense both PCs simultaneously. According to the SSM protocol, N SUs (Secondary User) are divided into two groups, which allows for the simultaneous sensing of two PCs. With a frame structure, after determining whether the PCs are idle or active during a sensing slot, the SUs may use the remaining time to transmit their own data. The throughput of the network is formulated as a convex optimization problem. We then evaluated an iterative algorithm to allocate the optimal sensing time, fusion rule and the number of members in each group. The computer simulation and numerical results show that the proposed optimal allocation improves the throughput of the SU under a misdetection constraint to protect the PCs. If not, its initial date of receipt shall be nullified.
In this paper, we investigate the throughput capacity of a multi-hop relay network with cognitive radio (CR) enabled relay stations (RS). We suggested a TDMA/FDMA based frame structure where RSs dynamically select unused channels to communicate with the base station (BS) using CR techniques to analyze the throughput capacity. We developed the throughput capacity model for the proposed system based on utilization factor. The analytical results based on those equations show significant improvement in throughput capacity for CR enabled multi-hop relay system.
We consider the multi-objective optimization of a multi-service arrayed-waveguide grating-based single-hop metro WDM network with the two conflicting objectives of maximizing throughput while minimizing delay. We develop and evaluate a genetic algorithm based methodology for finding the optimal throughput-delay tradeoff curve, the so-called Pareto-optimal frontier. Our methodology provides the network architecture and the Medium Access Control protocol parameters that achieve the Pareto-optima in a computationally efficient manner. The numerical results obtained with our methodology provide the Pareto-optimal network planning and operation solution for a wide range of traffic scenarios. The presented methodology is applicable to other networks with a similar throughput-delay tradeoff.

In this paper, the average probability of the symbol error rate (SER) and throughput are studied in the presence of joint spectrum sensing and data transmission in a cognitive relay network, which is in the environment of an optimal power allocation strategy. In this investigation, the main component in calculating the secondary throughput is the inclusion of the spatial false alarms, in addition to the conventional false alarms. It has been shown that there exists an optimal secondary power amplification factor at which the probability of SER has a minimum value, whereas the throughput has a maximum value. We performed a Monte-Carlo simulation to validate the analytical results.
Cooperative transmission protocols are always designed to achieve the largest diversity gain and the network capacity simultaneously. The concept of diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems has been extended to this field. However, DMT constrains a better understanding of the asymptotic interplay between transmission rate, outage probability (OP) and signal-to-noise ratio. Another formulation called the throughput-reliability tradeoff (TRT) was then proposed to avoid such a limitation. By this new rule, Azarian and Gamal well elucidated the asymptotic trends exhibited by the OP curves in block-fading MIMO channels. Meanwhile they doubted whether the new rule can be used in more general channels and protocols. In this paper, we will prove that it does hold true in decode-and-forward cooperative protocols. We deduce the theoretic OP curves predicted by TRT and demonstrate by simulations that the OP curves will asymptotically overlap with the theoretic curves predicted by TRT.
Fog radio access network (F-RAN) architectures provide markedly improved performance compared to conventional approaches. In this paper, an efficient genetic algorithm-based content distribution scheme is proposed that improves the throughput and reduces the transmission delay of a F-RAN. First, an F-RAN system model is presented that includes a certain number of randomly distributed fog access points (F-APs) that cache popular content from cloud and other sources. Second, the problem of efficient content distribution in F-RANs is described. Third, the details of the proposed optimal genetic algorithm-based content distribution scheme are presented. Finally, simulation results are presented that show the performance of the proposed algorithm rapidly approaches the optimal throughput. When compared with the performance of existing random and exhaustive algorithms, that of the proposed method is demonstrably superior.
This study considers a joint congestion control, routing and power control for energy-constrained wireless networks. A mathematical model is introduced which includes maximization of network utility, maximization of network lifetime, and trade-off between network utility and network lifetime. The framework would maximize the overall throughput of the network where the overall throughput depends on the data flow rates which in turn is dependent on the link capacities. The link capacity on the other hand is a function of transmit power levels and link Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR) which makes the power allocation problem inherently difficult to solve. Using dual decomposition techniques, subgradient method, and logarithmic transformations, a joint algorithm for rate and power allocation problems was formulated. Numerical examples for each optimization problem were also provided.
