  • Thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of a homologous series of penta-O-4-{4'-(cyanophenylazo)phenoxy}alkyl-D-glucopyranoses(CAGETn, n = 2~10, the number of methylene units in the spacer) has been investigated. The CAGETn with n of 2 and 7 exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases whereas other derivatives showed monotropic nematic phases. This is the first report of glucose derivatives that form thermotropic nematic phases. The isotropic-nematic transition temperatures ($T_{iNS}$) of CAGETns and their entropy variation at $T_{iN}$ showed the odd-even effect as a function of n. This behavior was rationalized in terms of the change in the average shape of the side chains as the parity of the spacer is varied. This rationalization also accounts for the observed variation of nematic-crystalline phase transition temperatures ($T_{NkS}$) and associoated entropy change at $T_{Nk}$. The entropy change at $T_{iN}$ or $T_{Nk}$ reaches a mininum at n = 3, before it increases again for n = 4. This may be attributed to the difference in the arrangement of the side groups. The mesophase properties of CAGETns were entirely different from those reported for partially or fully alkylated glucopyranoses. This result suggests that the degree of substitution and chemical structure of the substituents play an important role in the formation of the mesophase structures in the liquid crystals.

  • We investigated the improvement of viewing angle using a patterned double twisted (PDT) vertical-alignment (VA) cell mode on a homeotropic alignment layer. Good voltage-transmittance curves for negative dielectric anisotropic nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using the PDT-VA cell without a negative compensation film were obtained. The viewing angle of the PDT-VA cell without a negative compensation film was wider than that of a conventional VA cell.

  • We have developed a new multidomain vertical-alignment (MVA) mode using a homeotropic photopolymer that provides a wider viewing angle for nematic liquidcrystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy. Good voltage-transmittance curves for he new MVA cell using the homeotropic photopolymer were observed. The viewing angle of the new MVA cell using the homeotropic photopolymer was wider than that of the conventional VA cell. The wide viewing angle using the new MVA cell is attributable to 4-domain by the ribs with UV exposure on the photopolymer.

  • We have developed new reflective LCD for Mixed twist nematic LC mode with high quality image. We have found out an optimal twist angle of LC and optical film's axis by simulation. Also we measured electro-optic characteristics for new design panel. As a result, high reflectance and wide viewing angle characteristics were achieved.

  • Recently, studies on orientation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in nematic liquid crystal (LC) and CNTs effects on electro-optic characteristics of the LC device have been performed. In this paper, we summarize interaction nature between CNT and LC, local distortion of the LC director field by motion of CNTs, and effects on electro-optic performances of LC device.

  • We reported pushing of colloidal particles by a moving isotropic-nematic phase boundary. Here, we report tailoring the structure of 3-dimensional networks formed by these particles by adjusting the rate of phase transition and by application of an electric field. The resulting networks affect the electro-optic performance of liquid crystal devices.
