  • The automated demand response (DR) program encourages consumers to participate in grid operation by reducing power consumption or deferring electricity usage at peak time automatically. However, successful deployment of the automated DR program sphere needs careful assessment of appliances load profile (ALP). To this end, the recent method estimates frequency, consistency, and peak time consumption parameters of the daily ALP to compute their potential score to be involved in the DR event. Nonetheless, as the daily ALP is subject to varying with respect to the DR time ALP, the existing method could lead to an inappropriate estimation; in such a case, inappropriate appliances would be selected at the automated DR operation that effected a consumer comfort level. To address this challenge, we propose a more proper method, in which all the three parameters are calculated using ALP that overlaps with DR time, not the total daily profile. Furthermore, evaluation of our method using two public residential electricity consumption data sets, i.e., REDD and REFIT, shows that our energy management systems (EMS) could properly match a DR target. A more optimal selection of appliances for the DR event achieves a power consumption decreasing target with minimum comfort level reduction. We believe that our approach could prevent the loss of both utility and consumers. It helps the successful automated DR deployment by maintaining the consumers' willingness to participate in the program.

  • In this modern era of technology and information, e-learning approach has become an integral part of teaching and learning using modern technologies. There are different variations or classification of e-learning approaches. One of notable approaches is Personal Learning Environment (PLE). In a PLE system, the contents are presented to the user in a personalized manner (according to the user's needs and wants). The problem arises when a new user enters the system, and due to the lack of information about the new user's needs and wants, the system fails to recommend him/her the personalized e-learning contents accurately. This phenomenon is known as cold-start problem. In order to address this issue, existing researches propose different approaches for recommendation such as preference profile, user ratings and tagging recommendations. In this research paper, the implementation of a novel interaction-based approach is presented. The interaction-based approach improves the recommendation accuracy for the new-user cold-start problem by integrating preferences profile and tagging recommendation and utilizing the interaction among users and system. This research work takes leverage of the interaction of a new user with the PLE system and generates recommendation for the new user, both implicitly and explicitly, thus solving new-user cold-start problem. The result shows the improvement of 31.57% in Precision, 18.29% in Recall and 8.8% in F1-measure.

  • Ground deformation around construction site in urban area where typically adjacent structures are located needs to be strictly controlled. Accordingly, it is very important to precisely monitor the ground deformation. Settlement beacon is typically employed to measure the ground deformation, but meanwhile the rapid development in electronic technology enables 3D image scanner to become available for measuring the ground deformation profile in usual construction sites. With respect to the profile measurement, the 3D scanner has an advantage, whereas its accuracy is somewhat limited because it does not measure the displacement directly. In this paper, we developed a conditional merging technique to combine the ground displacement measured from settlement beacon and the profile measured by the 3D scanner. Synthetic ground deformation profile was generated to validate the proposed technique. It is found that the ground deformation measurement error can be reduced significantly via the conditional merging technique.

  • Users are able to use the information and service more free than previous wire network due to development of wireless network and device. For this reason, various studies on ubiquitous networks have been conducted. Various contexts brought in this ubiquitous environment, have recognized user's action through sensors. This results in the provision of better services. Because services exist in various places in ubiquitous networks, the application has the time of services searching. In addition, user's context is very dynamic, so a method needs to be found to recommend services to user by context. Therefore, techniques for reducing the time of service and increasing accuracy of recommendation are being studied. But it is difficult to quickly and appropriately provide large numbers of services, because only basic context information is stored. For this reason, we suggest DUPS(Dimension User Profile System), which stores location, time, and frequency information of often used services. Because previous technique used to simple information for recommending service without predicting services which is going to use on future, we can provide better service, and improve accuracy over previous techniques.

  • In the combustion engineering, to decrease pollution and increase production efficiency, and to optimally keep solid burning material amount constant in a burner online, it needs a smart method to detect the amount variation of the burning materials in a high temperature environment. This paper presents an online machine vision system for automatically measuring and detecting the burning material amount inside a burner or a boiler. In the camera-protecting box of the system, a sub-system for cooling is constructed by using the cooling water circulation techqique. In addition, the key and intelligent step in the system is to detect the pile profile of the variable burning material, and the algorithm for the pile profile tracing was studied based on the combination of the gey level (color) discontinuity and similarity based image segmentation methods, the discontinuity based sub-algorithm is made on the quaternion convolution, and the similarity based sub-algorithm is designed according to the region growing with multi-scale clustering. The results of the two sub-algoritms are fused to delineate the final pile profile, and the algorithm has been tested and applied in different industrial burners and boilers. The experiements show that the proposed algorithm works satisfactorily.

  • This paper introduces a compensating system for machining error, which is resulted from chucking with separated jaws. In machining the chucked cylindrical workpiece, the deterioration of machining accuracy, such as out-of-roundness is inevitable due to the variation of the radial compliance of the chuck workpiece system which is caused by the position of jaws with respect to the direction of the applied force. To compensate the chucking compliance induced error, firstly roundness profile of workpiece due to chucking compliance after machining needs to be predicted. Then using this predicted profile, the compensated tool feed trajectory can be generated. And by synchronizing the cutting tool feed system with workpiece rotation, the chucking compliance induced error can be compensated. To satisfy the condition that the cutting tool feed system must provide high speed and high position accuracy, brushless linear DC motor is used. In this study, firstly through the force-deflection experiment in workpiece chucked lathe, the variation of radial compliance of chuck workpiece system is obtained. Secondly using the mathematical equation and cutting experiment result, the predicted profile of workpiece and its compensation tool trajectory are generated. Thirdly the configuration of compensation system using linear motor is introduced, and to improve the system performance, PID controller is designed. Finally the tracking performance of system is examined by experiment. Through the real cutting experiment, roundness is significantly improved.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how the commonly known profile of public library users was described, by reviewing the literature published in the United States before the 1990s, when information environment of the public has been drastically changed. The profile of users as the socio-economically advantaged, active participants, and communication elites, has little changed since Berelson's study in the 1940s. Continuing research on users, however, are still needed to better understand their needs and behavior, facing the change since the 1990s.

  • The tooth profile of helical gear that is manufactured by the rack cutter consists of the involute curve and the trochoid curve. However, gear designers are very hard to calculate the exact profile because it needs very complex information about the gear manufacturing. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop the automatic generation program for the helical gear using the Solid Works API. First, involute and trochoide coordinates by the rack cutter are calculated. Using the data, Visual Basic program for the helical gear model is coded. This work gives us the quick helical gear modeling and can be used as the modeling for the finite element analysis.

  • Curling is caused by the difference in the temperature and humidity by the depth of the slab in Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement. Slab curvature shape and size change due to curling exert a profound influence on the internal stress and roughness of the pavement, affecting structural and functional performance of the pavement. Direct measurement of the slab curvature entails many problems. Many measuring instruments have to be installed at the early-stage of the pavement construction, and the behavior of the slab curvature needs to be measured accurately from the early-stage. Moreover, the cost and technical difficulty are very formidable to measure the slab curvature. This study develops a measurement method for slab curvature in jointed concrete pavement at any given time by applying Power Spectrum Density Analysis and Inverse Fast Fourier Transformation to the profile data, that can be easily obtained at the construction field site. The effectiveness of this developed method is verified by measuring the profile data of the test road of jointed concrete pavement at an inland central expressway by the hour and by examining the result of extracting the slab curvature shape from this profile data. Additionally, the profile data of CRCP(Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement) sections on the same expressway were obtained and analyzed at the same time. The validity of the method developed for the slab curvature shape extraction is verified by comparing the result from the analysis of the profile data of CRCP sections with that from the analysis of the prof1Ie data of jointed concrete pavement sections.
