  • In recent years, energy-management studies in buildings have proven useful for energy savings. Typically, during heating and cooling, the energy from a given building is lost through its windows. Generally, to block the entry of ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) rays, thin films of deposited metals or metal oxides are used, and the blocking of UV and IR rays by these thin films depends on the materials deposited on them. Therefore, by controlling the thicknesses and densities of the thin films, improving the transmittance of visible light and the blocking of heat rays such as UV and IR may be possible. Such improvements can be realized not only by changing the two-dimensional thin films but also by altering the zero-dimensional (0-D) nanostructures deposited on the films. In this study, 0-D nanoparticles were synthesized using a sol -gel procedure. The synthesized nanoparticles were deposited as deep coatings on polymer and glass substrates. Through spectral analysis in the UV-visible (vis) region, thin-film layers of deposited zinc oxide nanoparticles blocked >95 % of UV rays. For high transmittance in the visible-light region and low transmittance in the IR and UV regions, hybrid multiple layers of silica nanoparticles, zinc oxide particles, and fluorine-doped tin oxide nanoparticles were formed on glass and polymer substrates. Spectrophotometry in the UV-vis-near-IR regions revealed that the substrates prevented heat loss well. The glass and polymer substrates achieved transmittance values of 80 % in the visible-light region, 50 % to 60 % in the IR region, and 90 % in the UV region.

  • Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been overviewed for advanced photonics applications. Lanthanide(III) ions ($Ln^{3+}$) were encapsulated by the luminescent ligands such as metalloporphyrins, naphthalenes, anthracene, push-pull diketone derivatives and boron dipyrromethene(bodipy). The energy levels of the luminescent ligands were tailored to maintain the effective energy transfer process from luminescent ligands to $Ln^{3+}$ ions for getting a higher optical amplification gain. Also, key parameters for emission enhancement and efficient energy transfer pathways for the sensitization of $Ln^{3+}$ ions by luminescent ligands were investigated. Furthermore, to enhance the optophysical properties of novel luminescent $Ln^{3+}$ complexes, aryl ether-functionalized dendrons as photon antennas have been incorporated into luminescent $Ln^{3+}$ complexes, yielding novel $Ln^{3+}$-cored dendrimer complex such as metalloporphyrins, naphthalenes, and anthracenes bearing the Fr$\acute{e}$chet aryl-ether dendrons, namely, ($Er^{3+}-[Gn-Pt-Por]_3$ (terpy), $Er^{3+}-[Gn-Naph]_3$(terpy) and $Er^{3+}-[Gn-An]_3$(terpy)). These complexs showed much stronger near-IR emission bands at 1530 nm, originated from the 4f-4f electronic transition of the first excited state ($^4I_{13/2}$) to the ground state ($^4I_{15/2}$) of the partially filled 4f shell. A significant decrease in the fluorescence of metalloporphyrins, naphthalenes and anthracene ligand were accompanied by a strong increase in the near IR emission of the $Ln^{3+}$ ions. The near IR emission intensities of $Ln^{3+}$ ions in the lanthanide(III)-encapsulated dendrimer complexes were dramatically enhanced with increasing the generation number (n) of dendrons, due to the site-isolation and the light-harvesting(LH) effects. Furthermore, it was first attempted to distinguish between the site-isolation and the light-harvesting effects in the present complexes. In this review, synthesis and photophysical studies of inert and stable luminescent $Ln^{3+}$ complexes will be dealt for the advanced photonics applications. Also, the review will include the exploratory investigation of the key parameters for emission enhancement and the effective energy transfer pathways from luminescent ligands to $Ln^{3+}$ ions with $Ln^{3+}$-chelated prototype complexes.

  • Using IPHAS $H{\alpha}$ data, we found bright $H{\alpha}$ regions inside the elongated $^{13}CO$ cavity around a Herbig star, MWC 1080. To investigate the ionized hydrogen regions and the molecular cavity, we perform near-IR high-resolution spectroscopic of hydrogen Brackett lines and molecular hydrogen lines by Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) observations. We detected broad Brackett line series and sharp molecular lines with various velocity components. We present three ionized hydrogen regions (near MWC 1080A, MWC 1080E, and CO boundary) with different line widths, central radial velocities, and line ratios. We also show two spatially-separate $Br{\gamma}$ ${\lambda}2.1662{\mu}m$ peaks near MWC 1080A. To reveal a 3D structure of the cavity around MWC 1080, we try to use the detected sharp molecular lines.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the strength of the near-UV wavelength of 380 nm relative to visible and near-IR bands, and to find the suitable wavelength for detecting aerosols by using the Global Imager (GLI) sensor aboard the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II). Sensitivity analysis is performed for the retrieval of biomass burning aerosols by employing the radiative transfer model Rstar5b. It is determined that background surface reflectance in the blue band is similar to that in the near-UV band, and that wavelengths in the blue bands are more sensitive to the Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) than wavelengths in the near-UV band. The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) Aerosol Index (AI) is used in the indirect method used for aerosol retrieval, and the wavelength pair 380 nm and 460 nm is determined to be the most sensitive to the AOT. The results of this study suggest that wavelengths in the blue bands are suitable for detecting biomass burning aerosols over the Korean peninsula.

  • During the last years phytochemistry and phytopharmaceutical applications have developed rapidly and so there exists a high demand for faster and more efficient analysis techniques. Therefore we have established a near infrared transflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) method that allows a qualitative and quantitative determination of new polyphenolic pharmacological active leading compounds within a few seconds. As the NIR spectrometer has to be calibrated the compound of interest has at first to be characterized by using one or other a combination of chromatographic or electrophoretic separation techniques such as thin layer chromatography (TLC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis (CE), gas chromatography (GC) and capillary electrochromatography (CEC). Both structural elucidation and quantitative analysis of the phenolic compound is possible by direct coupling of the mentioned separation methods with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, CE-MS, CEC-MS) and a NMR spectrometer (LC-NMR). Furthermore the compound has to be isolated (NPLC, MPLC, prep. TLC, prep. HPLC) and its structure elucidated by spectroscopic techniques (UV, IR, HR-MS, NMR) and chemical synthesis. After that HPLC can be used to provide the reference data for the calibration step of the near infrared spectrometer. The NIRS calibration step is time consuming, which is compensated by short analysis times. After validation of the established NIRS method it is possible to determine the polyphenolic compound within seconds which allows to raise the efficiency in quality control and to reduce costs especially in the phytopharmaceutical industry.

  • We have used a mid-IR (mid-infrared) continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), developed previously and described in Ref. 12, to build a performance-evaluation setup for a mid-IR spectrometer. The used CW OPO had a wavelength tuning range of $ 2.5-3.6{\mu}m$ using a pump laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm and a fan-out MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) nonlinear crystal in a concentric cavity design. The OPO was combined with a near-IR integrating sphere and a Fourier-transform IR optical spectrum analyzer to build a performance-evaluation setup for mid-IR spectrometers. We applied this performance-evaluation setup to evaluating a mid-IR spectrometer developed domestically, and demonstrated the capability of evaluating the performance, such as spectral resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, spectral stray light, and so on, based on this setup.

  • It is very important to eliminate thermal background radiation for the near infrared camera system such as KAONICS (KAO Near Infrared Camera System). Thermal background radiations which come from window and cryostat wall influence IR detector and decrease IR system performance. Therefore the cold box which contains optics and detector housing must be cooled down to eliminate thermal background radiation. We carried out quantitative analysis to determine internal cooling temperature to reduce thermal noise in the J, H, Ks, and L bandpass. Additionally, we estimated the incoming heat load and then chose the cryocooler adequate to KAONICS's requirements. The cooling time and the final cooling temperature of the cold box were calculated. These results were also implemented to the system design.

  • Infrared (IR) wavelength is out of visible range and thus usually cut by hot filters in general commercial cameras. However, some information from the near-IR (NIR) range is known to improve the overall visibility of scene in many cases. For example when there is fog or haze in the scene, NIR image has clearer visibility than visible image because of its stronger penetration property. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for fusing the RGB and NIR images to obtain the enhanced images of the outdoor scenes. First, we construct a weight map by comparing the contrast of the RGB and NIR images, and then fuse the two images based on the weight map. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in enhancing visible image and removing the haze.

  • A series of inert and photo-stable Er(III)-encapsulated complexes based on ${\pi}$-extended dendritic anthracene ligands bearing G3-aryl-ether dendron ([G3-AnX]-$CO_2H$), which retain different ${\pi}$-bridging systems, such as single (X= S), double (X= D) and triple (X= T) bonds was designed and synthesized to establish the structure-property relationship. The near infrared emission intensities of Er(III)-encapsulated complexes were enhanced dramatically by increasing the ${\pi}$-conjugated extension of anthracene ligands. The time-resolved luminescence spectra show monoexponential decays with a lifetime of $2.0{\sim}2.4ms$ for $Er^{3+}$ ions in thin films, and calculated intrinsic quantum yields of $Er^{3+}$ ions are in the range of $0.025{\sim}0.03%$. As a result, all Er(III)-encapsulated dendrimer complexes exhibit the near IR emission with the following order: $Er^{3+}-[G3-AnD]_3$(terpy) > $Er^{3+}-[G3-AnS]_3$(terpy) ${\approx}$ $Er^{3+}-[G3-AnT]_3$(terpy), because $Er^{3+}-[G3-AnD]_3$(terpy) has a higher relatively spectral overlap J value and energy transfer efficiency. In addition, the lack of detectable phosphorescence and no significant spectral dependence of the ${\pi}$-extended anthracene moieties on the solvent polarity support energy transfer from their singlet state to the central $Er^{3+}$ ion taking place in $Er^{3+}-[G3-AnX]_3$(terpy).
