  • In the ship design process, ship motion and propulsion performance in sea waves became very important issues. Especially, prediction of ship propulsion performance during real operation is an important challenge to ship owners for economic operation in terms of fuel consumption and route-time evaluation. Therefore, it should be considered in the early design stages of the ship. It is thought that the averaged value and fluctuation of effective inflow velocity to the propeller have a great effect on the propulsion performance in waves. However, even for the nominal velocity distribution, very few results have been presented due to some technical difficulties in experiments. In this study, flow measurements near the propeller plane using a stereo PIV system were performed. Phase-averaged flow fields on the propeller plane of a KVLCC2 model ship in waves were measured in the towing tank by using the stereo PIV system and a phase synchronizer with heave motion. The experiment was carried out at fully loaded condition with making surge, heave and pitch motions free at a forward speed corresponding to Fr=0.142 (Re=2.55×106) in various head waves and calm water condition. The phase averaged nominal velocity fields obtained from the measurements are discussed with respect to effects of wave orbital velocity and ship motion. The low velocity region is affected by pressure gradient and ship motion.

Control of the VIV of a cantilevered square cylinder with free-end suction

  • A steady slot suction near the free-end leading edge of a finite-length square cylinder was used to control its aerodynamic forces and vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The freestream oncoming flow velocity ($U_{\infty}$) was from 3.8 m/s to 12.8 m/s. The width of the tested cylinder d = 40 mm and aspect ratio H/d = 5, where H was the height of the cylinder. The corresponding Reynolds number was from 10,400 to 35,000. The tested suction ratio Q, defined as the ratio of suction velocity ($U_s$) at the slot over the oncoming flow velocity at which the strongest VIV occurs ($U_{\nu}$), ranged from 0 to 3. It was found that the free-end slot suction can effectively attenuate the VIV of a cantilevered square cylinder. In the experiments, the RMS value of the VIV amplitude reduced quickly with Q increasing from 0 to 1, then kept approximately constant for $Q{\geq}1$. The maximum reduction of the VIV occurs at Q = 1, with the vibration amplitude reduced by 92%, relative to the uncontrolled case. Moreover, the overall fluctuation lift of the finite-length square cylinder was also suppressed with the maximum reduction of 87%, which occurred at Q = 1. It was interesting to discover that the free-end shear flow was sensitive to the slot suction near the leading edge. The turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) of the flow over the free end was the highest at Q = 1, which may result in the strongest mixing between the high momentum free-end shear flow and the near wake.

연료분출을 수반하는 보염기 후류에 형성되는 확산화염의 보염특성 (Stabilization Characteristics of the Diffusion Flame Formed in the Wake of Bluff Body with Fuel Injection)

  • 보염기 후류에 형성되는 화산회생의 보염특성을 고찰하기 위하여 연료 분출각의 변화, 난류발생격자의 설치, 재순환영역 내에 보조 연료의 공급에 따른 화염의 안정범위, 재순환영역의 길이 및 온도, 재순환영역주변의 난류강도 분포를 측정, 고찰하였다. 재순환영역의 길이는 주 연료 분출량의 변화에 따른 영향을 받지 않지만, 연료 분출각 및 주류유속의 변화, 보조 연료의 공급 난류발생격자의 설치 등에 따라 영향을 받는다. 확산화염의 경우 일반적으고 재순환영역의 길이가 길수록 보염성이 불량하지만, 난류발생격자를 설치한 경우에는 재순환영역의 길이가 길수록 보염성이 양호하다. 재순환영역의 온도는 연료 분출각의 변화, 보조 연료의 공급, 난류발생격사의 설치 등에 따라 영향을 받으며, 이론 혼합기 상태에서 최고값에 도달한다. 일반적으로 재순환영역의 온도가 낮을수록 보염성이 양호하지만. 난류발생격자를 설치한 경우에는 재순환영역의 온도가 낮을수록 보염성이 불량하다. 화염이 형성되는 보염기 후류 영역에 대한 난류강도는 격자의 직경이나 구속비가 큰 난류발생 격자를 설치한 경우에 크게 나타나며, 난류강도가 강 할수록 보염성이 불량하다. 연료 분출각의 변화, 난류발생격자의 설치, 재순환영역 내에 보조 연료의 공급 등의 방법으로 확산화염의 보염특성을 제어할 수 있다.

SAR 영상의 Azimuth 차분을 이용한 움직이는 물체의 속도측정방법 (Velocity Estimation of Moving Targets by Azimuth Differentials of SAR Images)

  • SAR에서 마이크로파의 진행방향으로의 속도성분을 가지고 움직이는 물체는 영상에서 azimuth 방향으로 이동된 위치에 상이 맺힌다는 현상은 이미 잘 알려져 있다. 대부분의 속도측정 알고리즘들은 실제 물체의 위치와 상이 맺힌 위치 사이의 거리를 측정함으로써 속도를 유추하였다. 그러나 움직이는 물체의 실제의 위치를 나타내는 지시자인 도로나 배의 물결모양은 일반적으로 SAR 영상에서의 식별도가 높지 않기 때문에 이러한 방법은 영상취득시의 조건이나 물체의 움직임 정도에 따라 적용이 제한적이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 SAR 원시자료 처리단계의 중간 산물인 range-compressed 영상의 azimuth 차분신호로부터 물체의 속도를 측정하는 새로운 방법을 제안한다. 이 방법은 움직이는 물체에 의한 도플러 중심주파수의 변이가 azimuth 차분신호에서의 위상변화를 일으킨다는 점에 기초한다. 일반적으로 SAR에서 감지하는 지표물의 위상은 SAR의 기하에 의하여 발생하는 도플러 변화율에 따라서 선형적으로 변한다. 이 선형변화위상과 몇 가지 상수 값을 갖는 위상들을 제거하고 남은 신호는 물체의 움직임과 직접적인 관련이 있으므로, 이로부터 속도를 구해낼 수 있다. 이 방법을 실제 ENVISAT ASAR영상을 이용하여 배의 속도를 구하는 데에 적용해 보았으며, 그 결과는 목표물의 위치에 따라 다른 양상을 보였다. 해상에 단독적으로 존재하는 배에 적용하였을 때는 0.1m/s 정도의 차이로 기존의 속도측정 알고리즘의 결과와 잘 일치하였으나, 육지에 인접한 연안의 배는 신호의 교란에 의해서 1m/s 이상의 오차를 보였다.

자유수면과 움직이는 벽면 사이에 놓인 원형 실린더 주위의 층류 유동구조 (Laminar Flow Structures Near a Circular Cylinder in between a Free-Surface and a Moving Wall)

  • The present study numerically investigates the interaction between a free-surface and flow around a circular cylinder over a moving wall. In order to simulate the flow past the circular cylinder over a moving wall near a free-surface, this study has adopted the direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) method with the level set method in the Cartesian coordinates. Numerical simulation is performed for a Reynolds numbers of 100 in the range of $0.25{\leq}g/D{\leq}2.00$ and $0.5{\leq}h/D{\leq}2.00$, where g/D and h/D are the gaps between the cylinder and a moving wall and the cylinder and a free-surface normalized by cylinder diameter D, respectively. According to g/D and h/D, the vortex structures have been classified into three patterns of the two-row, one-row, steady elongation. In general, both of g/D and h/D have the large values which mean the cylinder is far away from the wall and the free-surface, two-row vortex structure forms in the wake. When g/D decreases, the two-row vortex structure gradually transfers into the one-row vortex structure. When the g/D reveals the critical value below which the flow becomes steady state, resulting in the steady elongation vortex.

Do Inner Planets Modulate the Space Environment of the Earth?

  • Variabilities in the solar wind cause disturbances throughout the heliosphere on all temporal and spatial scales, which leads to changeable space weather. As a view of space weather forecasting, in particular, it is important to know direct and indirect causes modulating the space environment near the Earth in advance. Recently, there are discussions on a role of the interaction of the solar wind with Mercury in affecting the solar wind velocity in the Earth's neighborhood during its inferior conjunctions. In this study we investigate a question of whether other parameters describing the space environment near the Earth are modulated by the inner planets' wake, by examining whether the interplanetary magnetic field and the proton density in the solar wind observed by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, and the geomagnetic field via the Dst index and Auroral Electrojet index (AE index) are dependent upon the relative position of the inner planets. We find there are indeed apparent variations. For example, the mean variations of the geomagnetic fields measured in the Earth's neighborhood apparently have varied with a timescale of about 10 to 25 days. Those variations in the parameters we have studied, however, turn out to be a part of random fluctuations and have nothing to do with the relative position of inner planets. Moreover, it is found that variations of the proton density in the solar wind, the Dst index, and the AE index are distributed with the Gaussian distribution. Finally, we point out that some of properties in the behavior of the random fluctuation are to be studied.

고가궤도에 근접한 자기부상열차 형상 주위의 3차원 난류유동에 대한 수치해석 (Computational Analysis of Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flow Around Magnetically Levitated Train Configurations in Elevated Track Proximity)

  • In the present study, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, together with the equations of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model of turbulence, were solved numerically in a general body-fitted coordinate system for three-dimensional turbulent flows around the six basic shapes of the magnetically levitated train(MAGLEV). The numerical computations were conducted on the MAGLEV model configurations to provide information on shapes of this type very near the elevated track at a constant Reynolds number of $1.48{\times}10^{6}$ based on the body length. The coordinate system was generated by numerically solving a set of Poisson equations. The convective transport equations were discretized using the finite-analytic scheme which employed analytic solutions of the locally-linearized equations. A time marching algorithm was employed to enable future extensions to be made to handle unsteady and fully-elliptic problems. The pressure-velocity coupling was treated with the SIMPLER-algorithm. Of particular interests were wall effect by the elevated track on the aerodynamic forces and flow characteristics of the six models calculated. The results indicated that the half-circle configuration with extended sides and with smooth curvature of sides was desirable because of the low aerodynamic forces and pitching moment. And it was found that the separation bubble was occured at wake region in near the elevated track.

Large Eddy Simulation of the flow around a finite-length square cylinder with free-end slot suction

  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to study the effects of steady slot suction on the aerodynamic forces of and flow around a wall-mounted finite-length square cylinder. The aspect ratio H/d of the tested cylinder is 5, where H and d are the cylinder height and width, respectively. The Reynolds number based on free-stream oncoming flow velocity U and d is 2.78×104. The suction slot locates near the leading edge of the free end, with a width of 0.025d and a length of 0.9d. The suction coefficient Q (= Us/U) is varied as Q = 0, 1 and 3, where Us is the velocity at the entrance of the suction slot. It is found that the free-end steady slot suction can effectively suppress the aerodynamic forces of the model. The maximum reduction of aerodynamic forces occurs at Q = 1, with the time-mean drag, fluctuating drag, and fluctuating lift reduced by 3.75%, 19.08%, 40.91%, respectively. For Q = 3, all aerodynamic forces are still smaller than those for Q = 0 (uncontrolled case), but obviously higher than those for Q = 1. The involved control mechanism is successfully revealed, based on the comparison of the flow around cylinder free end and the near wake for the three tested Q values.

입구 경계층 두께가 축류 압축기 내부 유동에 미치는 영향 (I) - 허브 코너 실속 및 익단 누설 유동 - (Effects of the Inlet Boundary Layer Thickness on the Flow in an Axial Compressor (I) - Hub Corner Stall and Tip Leakage Flow -)

  • A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the internal flow in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition($\phi=85\%$) and near stall condition($\phi=65\%$). At the design condition, the flows in the axial compressor show, independent of the inlet boundary layer thickness, similar characteristics such as the pressure distribution, size of the hub comer-stall, tip leakage flow trajectory, limiting streamlines on the blade suction surface, etc. However, as the load is increased, the hub corner-stall grows to make a large separation region at the junction of the hub and suction surface for the inlet condition with thick boundary layers at the hub and casing. Moreover, the tip leakage flow is more vortical than that observed in case of the thin inlet boundary layer and has the critical point where the trajectory of the tip leakage flow is abruptly turned into the downstream. For the inlet condition with thin boundary layers, the hub corner-stall is diminished so it is indistinguishable from the wake. The tip leakage flow leans to the leading edge more than at the design condition but has no critical point. In addition to these, the severe reverse flow, induced by both boundary layer on the blade surface and the tip leakage flow, can be found to act as the blockage of flows near the casing, resulting in heavy loss.

벽면 근처에 놓인 정방형주의 수직 분할판에 의한 유동 제어 (The Flow Control by a Vertical Splitter Plate for a Square Prism near a Wall)

  • 본 연구는 벽면 근처에 놓인 정방형주의 모서리에 수직 분할판을 부착하여 유체력 제어 효과를 양항력 측정실험 및 PIV에 의한 가시화 실험으로 조사한 것이다. 분할판의 폭은 정방형주 폭의 10% 로 했다. 실험변수로서는 수직 분할판의 부착 위치 및 벽면과 사각주 사이의 간격으로 하였다. 정방형주 중심에서 후류방향으로 3.0B(B: 정방형주 한 변 길이) 떨어진 곳에서 와도의 변화가 가장 명확했다. 수직 분할판의 위치 및 유무와 관계없이 간격비 0.4~0.6에서 평균양력계수 및 Strouhal 수의 변곡점이 나타났다. 정방형주 윗면의 뒷 모서리에 수직 분할판을 설치한 경우 항력이 감소하였으며 각 간격비 평균 5.0%의 항력 저감 효과를 얻었다. 정방형주 윗면 박리영역의 크기는 앞쪽 모서리에 수직 분할판을 설치한 경우가 가장 컸고, 원형의 정방형주, 뒷쪽 모서리에 수직 분할판을 설치한 순서로 작았으며, 평균항력계수는 이 박리영역의 크기에 비례했다.
