The effects of the frequency of upstream gust on the unsteady boundary characteristics on a downstream blade was simulated by using a Navier-Stokes code. The Navier-Stokes code is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses a low Reynolds k-e turbulence model to close the momentum equations. The MIT flapping foil experiment set-up is used to simulate the interaction between the upstream wake and a blade. The frequency of the upstream wake is simulated by varying rate of pitching motion of the flapping airfoils. Three reduced frequencies. 3.62. 7.24. and 10.86. are simulated. As the frequency increases, the unsteady fluctuation on the surfaces of the downstream hydrofoil is shown to decrease while the upstream flapper wake has larger first harmonics of y-velocity component. The unsteady vortices are shown to interact with each other and. as a result. the upstream wake becomes undiscernible inside the inner layer. The turbulence kinetic energy shows a similar behavior. Limiting streamlines around the trailing edge of the flapper are shown to conform with the unsteady Kutta condition for a round trailing edge. while limiting streamlines around the trailing edge of the hydrofoil conforms with the unsteady Kutta condition for a sharp edge.
This work was devoted to compare two different cavitation models to study the dependency of model constants. The cavitation model of Merkle et al.(2006) and Kunz et al.(2000) were used for the present computational study. The cavitation models were coupled with the incompressible unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver to indicate the vaporization and condensation processes. For this purpose, a preconditioning method was added as the pseudo-time term to solve the unsteady stiffness problems. For the validation of the numerical simulation, the computation was performed for the cavitating flow in a converging-diverging channel. The present results show that Merkle's cavitation model is independent to the model constants, and the higher numerical accuracy over Kunz's cavitation model.

Three dimensional laminar flows are numerically simulated around the submerged spheres. The finite volume based Navier-Stokes equations with unstructured grids are solved to make clear the hydrodynamic phenomena near and far away from the body. Reviews are made on with the vorticity, velocity, dynamic pressure, residuals, drags, etc. The Reynolds numbers under consideration are 425, 300, 250 and 100. In case of small spacing between spheres, the flow is more stable than that past a single sphere. According to the analysis, the flow past two spheres is found to be unstable as the spacing becomes larger. The rear sphere shows the deduction of stagnation pressure, which results in the decrease of the resistance. The predicted drag coefficients verify that the present numerical calculation is reasonable.

A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted. Two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are integrated using staggered grid and a finite volume method with C-QUICK scheme for spatial derivatives and fully implicit scheme for the time derivatives. SIMPLE-C algorithm is employed to solve the pressure field. Computational results show that the third eddy is generated in the shear layer mode but not in the steady mode. This signifies that the third eddy plays an important role in cavity flow stability. As a means to control the flow, jet blowing is applied to a position below the cavity upstream edge. Effects of flow control parameters on the stability such as the frequency, the phase, and the velocity magnitude are reported.

Mode transition of the axi-symmetric screech tone in the low supersonic Mach number range from 1.0 to 1.20 is numerically analyzed. The axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equations and the k-e turbulence model are solved in the cylindrical coordinate system. The dispersion-relation-preserving(DRP) scheme is applied for space discretization and the optimized four levels marching method are used for time integration. At low supersonic Mach numbers with an axi-symmetric A1 mode in the simulation, it is shown that acoustic propagation due to the nonlinear effects is seen in the lateral direction and the screech tone frequency is the same as the vortex passing frequency due to the generation of intense large-scale vortical motions.
In this paper, a new displacement based high-order shear deformation theory is introduced for the static response of functionally graded sandwich plate with new definition of porosity distribution taking into account composition and the scheme of the sandwich plate. Unlike any other theory, the number of unknown functions involved is only four, as against five in case of other shear deformation theories. The theory presented is variationally consistent, has strong similarity with classical plate theory in many aspects, does not require shear correction factor, and gives rise to transverse shear stress variation such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness satisfying shear stress free surface conditions. Material properties of FGM layers are assumed to vary continuously across the plate thickness according to either power-law or sigmoid function in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The face layers are considered to be FG across each face thickness while the core is made of a ceramic homogeneous layer. Governing equations are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. The closed-form solution of a simply supported rectangular plate subjected to sinusoidal loading has been obtained by using the Navier method. Numerical results are presented to show the effect of the material distribution, the sandwich plate geometry and the porosity on the deflections and stresses of FG sandwich plates. The validity of the present theory is investigated by comparing some of the present results with other published results.

During the past 50 years methods for predicting wave overtopping of coastal structures have coastal structures have continuously been developed Wave overtopping is one of the most important processes for the design of seawalls. The term 'wave overtopping' is used here to refer to the processes where waves hit a sloping structure run up the slope and, if the crest level of the slope is lower than the highest run up level, overtop the structure. Wave overtopping is dependent on the processes associated with breaking wave. The Numerical model is based on Navier-Stokes equation and Marker-Density Function of method for nonlinear free-surface flow by Miyata & Park(1995). The influence of how the slopes of seawalls, wave type and crest freeboard affect overtopping discharges has been investigated. The research of study using the new development nonlinear free-surface flow numerical model SOLA-VOF are presented.

In this study, performance analyses have been conducted for a 5MW class wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with K-${\epsilon}$ turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Predicted aerodynamic performance considering structural deformation effect of the blade show different results compared to the case of rigid blade model.

This paper presents a numerical investigation on propagation of hydrocarbon (ethylene-air mixture) detonation in a deformable copper tube. In this study, we deal with interactions of multi-materials, gas and solid. In gas phase, the model consists of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and one step chemical reaction. Also we use Inviscid Euler equations in solid. In order to the interface tracking and the determination of boundary values, our model handle level-set and ghost fluid method. Through the numerical simulation results, we identify generations of expansion waves and interferences by the wall deformation. In addition, we predict the minimum copper tube thickness that ensures safety under an incident detonation.

Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically for the computation of turbulent flow around a Wigley double model. A second order finite difference method is applied for the spatial discretization on the nonstaggered grid system and 4-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the numerical integration in time. In order to increase the time step, residual averaging scheme of Jameson is adopted. Pressure field is obtained by solving the pressure-Poisson equation with the appropriate Neumann boundary condition. For the turbulence closure, 0-equation turbulence model of Baldwin-Lomax is used. Numerical computation is carried out for the Reynolds number of 4.5 million. Comparisons of the computed results with the available experimental data show good agreements for the velocity and pressure distributions.
