  • Copepod nauplii plays an important role as a linker between the microbial food web and classical food chain in marine ecosystem and is an essential food source for early stage of many larval fishes. Study on the influencing factors on the growth of copepod naupliar stages has been rarely carried out in despite of these ecological significances. Many studies have shown that food availability and temperature are major factors to influence copepod growth. However, due to the complicated environment parameters in coastal ecosystem, the relationships between growth of copepods and influencing factors are still unclear under the natural condition. Growth rates of the copepod $Acartia$ $hongi$ nauplii were measured in Kyeonggi Bay from February to December 2001. $Acartia$ $hongi$ is numerically abundant and widespread predominant species in the coastal regions of the Yellow Sea and occurs continuously throughout the year, with a maximum peak in late spring. The naupliar growth rates of $Acartia$ $hongi$ by the artificial cohort method varied from 0.03 to 0.18 $day^{-1}$, with a mean of 0.09 $day^{-1}$. The overall naupliar growth rates showed a significantly positive relationship with the variation in water temperature. However, Previous study reported that the growth rates of adult $Acartia$ $hongi$ were primarily influenced by the variation in chlorophyll-$a$. Therefore, these differences demonstrated that the influencing factors of growth did not correspond with the developmental stages. The results of this study suggest that the dissimilarity of growth between nauplius and adult female resulted from the size-dependant difference in food availability and the growth of older developmental stages containing adults are more food-dependent than juveniles.

  • Microbial organisms including yeast, Acinetobacter sp. AG-3, Chlorococcum sp., Chlorella sp. and some of their combinations were tested to evaluate growth efficiency of Tigriopus japonicus. Body length and weight of the copepoda were measured during four days experiment. Acinetobacter sp. AG-3, dried yeast(produced Wago), Chlorella sp., Chlorococcum sp. and mixed culture were used as food sources. Yeast(Y.) was the most effective food for the growth during nauplius stage and efficiencies of bacteria(Bact.)+chlorococcum sp.(RA), Chlorococcum sp.(RA), Bact.+chlorella sp.(Ch.), Bact. and Ch. decreased in odor, while for the growth of copepodite and adult, Bact.+RA was the most effective food with decreased efficiency of Y., RA, Bact. + Ch., Bact., Ch. in order. The ratio of weight gain to the food uptaken, after the weight and food units were converted to carbon, was between 21.6 and $68.7\%$, This result suggests that some kinds of bacteria, algae and mixed cultural microorganisms could be good food sources for the growth of copepoda.

  • The temporal dynamics of the meiofauna community in Marian Cove, King George Island were observed from January 22 to October 29 1996. Generally, 14 taxa of metazoan meiofauna were found. Nematodes were dominant comprising 90.12% of the community, harpacticoid 6.55%, and Kinorhynchs 1.54%. Meiofauna abundance increased monthly from January to May 1996, while varying in abundance after August 1996. Overall mean abundance of metazoan meiofauna was $2634ind./10cm^2$ during the study periods, which is about as high as that found in temperate regions. Nematodes were most abundant representing $2399ind./10cm^2$. Mean abundance of harpacticoids, including copepodite and nauplius was $131ind./10cm^2$ by kinorhynchs $(26ind./10cm^2)$. The overall abundance of other identified organisms was $31ind./10cm^2$ Other organisms consisted of a total of 11 taxa including Ostracoda $(6ind./10cm^2)$, Polycheata $(7ind./10cm^2)$, Oligochaeta $(8ind./10cm^2)$, and Bivalvia $(6ind./10cm^2)$. Additionally, protozoan Foraminifera occurred at the study area with a mean abundance of $263ind./10cm^2$. Foraminiferans were second in dominance to nematodes. The dominant taxa such as nematodes, harpacticoids, kinorhynchs and the other tua were trained and extensively scattered in the map through the Kohonen network. The temporal pattern of the community composition was most affected by the abundance dynamics of kinorhynchs and harpacticoids. The neural network model also allowed for simulation of data that was missing during two months of inclement weather. The lowest meiofauna abundance was found in August 1996 during winter. The seasonal changes were likely caused by temperature and salinity changes as a result of meltwater runoff, and the physical impact by passing icebergs.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the faunal composition and distribution pattern of meiobenthic community in the deep sea sediments of northeastern Pacific Ocean. Faunal samples were collected at 10 stations using a multiple corer and a spade type box corer during May 1996. A total of 18 meiofaunal groups were found, and Sarcomastigophora was the most dominant group which accounted for 35.8% of total meiofaunal abundance. Nematoda (30.8%), Nauplius larvae of Crustacea (11.9%), Ciliophora (6.8%) and Harpacticoida (3.0%) which were also important components of the meiofaunal community. All of these five faunal groups comprised more than 90% of total meiofauna. The highest density of 195 ind./10 $cm^2$ was found at St. 4 (4960 m water depth), but the lowest one, 85 ind./10 $cm^2$ at St. 1 (4969 m water depth). The overall mean density of meiofauna was estimated as $1.34{\times}10^5\;ind./m^2$. The abundance of meiofauna showed a slow decreasing trend along the water depth. The highest density was observed in the upper 1 cm and density decreased drastically with increasing depth from the surface.

  • We observed zooplankton community to understand variations in the species composition and abundance in Gangjin Bay. Samples were collected bimonthly from February to November 1999 at 10 stations in Gangjin Bay of the southern part of Korea. Zooplankton communities consisted to nine taxa and mean biomass was 2,028 indiv. $m^{-3}$. The maximum abundance was observed to be 5,496 indiv. $m^{-3}$ in February and the minimum in November, 78 indiv. $m^{-3}$. Copepods dominated and most diverse in Gangjin Bay. Seasonal fluctuation in the copepod abundance varied between 42 and 4,159 indiv. $m^{-3}$. Dominant species are Acartia omorii, Centrophages abdominalis, Paracalanus indicus and A. steueri. Cladoceran also dominated and the maximum abundance was 765 indiv. $m^{-3}$ in April. A. omorii and Oithona davisae dominated in February, A. omorii, Eurytemora pacifica, Evadne nordmanni and Podon polyphemoides in April, Tortanus dextrilobatus and decapod nauplius in June, Paracalanus indicus, E. tergestina and Penitia avirostris in August and A. erythraea and P. indicus in October. In November, P. indicus and Sagitta crassa dominated.

  • A series of 29 sampling with a 330 ${\mu}$m and a 64 ${\mu}$m mesh size of nets was conducted at a fixed station in Ilkwang Bay, southeast cost of Korea, from Oct, 2, 1991 to Oct. 10, 1992, to investigate the effects of mesh size of nets on biomass estimation of copepod Acartia steueri. The catch of copepodite and nauplius stages of A. steueli taken by two nets with different mesh size was different, showing that all developmental stages of A. steueri were retained on the 64 ${\mu}$m mesh net, but only $\geq$stage 4 copepodite were caught by the 330 ${\mu}$m mesh net. Abundance and biomass in each developmental stage estimated with the 64 ${\mu}$m mesh net were significantly higher than those of the 330 ${\mu}$m mesh net, except for adult female and stage 5 copepodite in female. The body length as well as the body width is likely to affect the catch of the nets. The mean biomass of A. steueli estimated with the traditional 330 ${\mu}$m net was 2.8 times lower than the value obtained with the 64 ${\mu}$m mesh net. However, the seasonal patterns of the biomass were comparable. These results suggest that accurate sampling strategr of the entire copepods assemblage including nauplii and copepodites are essential when estimating the abundance and biomass of copepods for the better understanding of the role of copepods in marine ecosystem.

  • This study investigated the food value of Paracyclopina nana for flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae in two feeding stages, rotifer (for 12 days) and Artemia (for 16 days). In the rotifer feeding stage, survival and growth of flounder larvae in the only P. nana (nauplii) feeding experiment were higher than in the only rotifer feeding experiment on 12 DAH (days after hatching). In the Artemia feeding stage, the growth of flounder larvae in the only P. nana (C4-adult) feeding experiment and mixture feeding experiment (P. nana+Artemia) were higher than in other experiments on 30 DAH, but the survival of flounder larvae did not differ significantly among experiments. The n-3 HUFA contents of nauplius and C4-adult were 4.0% and 5.4%, respectively. Overall the results of this study indicate that the brackish water cyclopoid copepod, P. nana, is an effective live food organism for larval seedling production of marine fish.

  • Seasonal fluctuations in abundances and ingestion rates of the three major copepods, Acartia hongi, Calanus sinicus and Paracalanus parvus s. l., around the Taean Peninsula were studied along with the estimation of the grazing impacts by them on phytoplankton standing stocks. These three copepods occupied about 50% of total mesozooplankton abundances and about 70% of total copepod abundances. A. hongi dominated in winter and spring while C. sinicus showed only one peak in spring. P parvus s. l. occurred dominantly in summer and fall. The ingestion rates of these three copepods were the highest in spring, when their abundances of eggs and nauplii were more than 10 times greater. Abundances of copepodites of these copepods were also very abundant at this time of high ingestion rates. These increased ingestion rates seemed to be related with reproduction. The grazing impacts by these three copepods were about 5% of the available chlorophyll a in the water column (with the range of 0.7 to 40.5%). The highest value was found in spring.
