Surfactants which have ability to decrease surface tension through surface activation between the interfaces are used as essential major raw materials for detergents and cosmetics. Typical synthetic detergents such as EO (ethylene oxide), LAB (linear alkylbenzene) are made from chemical surfactant derived from petrochemicals, therefore, they are responsible for major environment contaminations and ecosystem destruction, especially of rivers and also cause atopic dermatitis through strong skin stimulus of these small molecular's powerful permeability and lead to cancers if they get into organs through capillary. Now worldwide interest is increasing to develop new natural surfactants and biosurfactants as ecological, biodegradabl, harmless and multi-functional new amphiphillic materials which replace these synthetic surfactants.

PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) deposited in soil are one of serious problems against sustainable land use. In this paper, chemical soil flushing in a packed sandy soil matrix using a natural surfactant, $\beta$-cyclodextrin (CD) was studied via a fluorescence spectroscopy and a dye labelling. The contaminants are lipophilic ring compounds- phenanthrene and naphthalene. Sand type and flushing intensity (rate and concentration) are chosen as important investigation variables. The removal efficiencies were proportional to flow rate, concentration, temperature of the flushing solution and voidity of the sand column. Initial sorption of the surfactant onto the soil matrix was found to be a key step while flow shear was more crucial in the latter steps. The residual portion of the surfactant, which was most likely to be due to the initial sorption, would not be so influential on this type of soil washing for long times. These results will be useful in future for pilot scale in situ washing and for establishing better soil washing strategy.
Three bioremediation methods, natural attenuation (NA), biostimulation (BS) and bioaugmentation (BA) were applied to remediate diesel-contaminated soil, with their remediation efficiencies and soil microbial activities compared both with and without surfactant (Tween 80). BA treatment employing Rhodococcus sp. EH831 was the most effective for the remediation of diesel-contaminated soil at initial remediation stage. On the addition of surfactant, no significant effect on the remediation performance was observed. A negative correlation was found between the dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and residual concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) at below 20,000 mg-$TPHs{\cdot}kg$-dry $soil^{-1}$, as follows: DHA (${\mu}g$-TPF(Triphenylformazan)${\cdot}g$-dry $soil^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) = -0.02 ${\times}$ TPHs concentration (mg-$TPHs{\cdot}kg$-dry $soil^{-1}$) + 425.76 (2500 ${\leq}$ TPHs concentration ${\leq}$ 20000, p < 0.01).

In this research, organic extracts from roots of platycodon grandiflorum was tested to see the possibility for cosmetic natural surfactant. Interfacial properties of extracts of Platycodon grandiflorum was checked for interfacial tension, forming force, dispersion force, emulsion force, emulsion activity, and emulsion stability. At 0.005 wt% concentration, the interfacial tension against the caster oil was 11.5 dyn/cm which was lower than that of Tween 40 and quillaja bark. Extracts of Platycodon grandiflorum showed excellent emulsification activity and stability for cosmetic oils such as olive oil, soybean oil, and canola oil. In patch test using 2-5% of the extract and glycerin, the extract showed mild skin irritation. From the experiment, the extracts of platycodon grandiflorum root showed good interfacial properties as a cosmetic agent with minor skin irritation.
The biodegradation of recalcitrant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, pyrene was investigated in microcosm simulating the beach sand and seawater. The natural biodegradation rates of pyrene were between 30-2,200 ng/g(ml)/day in beach sand and seawater when the pyrenc loading rates were 100- 1,000 ppm at 5-$20^{\circ}C$. The effects of the inoculum size, pyrene concentralion, incubation temperature and surfactant addition were investigated in fertilized (Inipol EAP 22) samples. Generally the biodegradation in beach sand was higher than that in seawater. A mixed inoculum (Pseudomonus, Acinetobacter, Moruxella) showed the 3,120 nglglday of biodegradation rate in beach sand with 200 ppm pyrene, which was 7.8 times higher than the natural biodegradation rate. The highest transformation rate, 4,860 ng/g/day was obtained in the bioaugmented beach sand (1,000 ppm pyrene). The glucose and surfactant addition to enhance the removal have negatively influenced on the biodegradation of pyrene. In case ol surfactants, CMC (critical micell concentration) might bc the control factor for the biodegradation.

It is well known that the membrane separation process combined with surfactant micelle (micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration) or polyelectrolyte (polyelectrolyte-enhanced ultrafiltration) can remove heavy metals effectively. However, the environmental hazard of surfactant or polyelectrolyte remained in effluent is a serious disadvantage of these methods. In this study, humic substances (HS) were used as complexing agents for metal removal instead of synthetic chemicals. The HS are a sort of natural organic matters which are biodegradable and abundant in natural environment. And the functional groups such as carboxyl groups and phenols in HS can bind with the cationic radionuclides and form complexes. Therefore separation process using them will be more environmental-friendly. The effects of concentration of HS and pH on the removal of cobalt were investigated. The ultrafiltration process was applied to the separation of the cobalt - HS complexes from the aqueous stream. At the concentration of > 3 g/L of HS and pH of 6, over 95 % of cobalt was removed by regenerated cellulose membrane of molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) 3,000. As the concentration of HS increased, the removal of cobalt also was improved because of increase in biding sites (functional groups). The cobalt removal increased from 72.5 % to 97.5 % when pH increased from 4 to 8 at the concentration of 3 g/L HS because of increase in HS solubility and cobalt hydroxide precipitation. In the presence of NaCl, the removal efficiency of cobalt decreased.
When a hydrophobic and hydrophilic environments of bis(2,2'-bipyridyl) copper(II) ($Cu(bpy)_2{^{2+}}$) are produced in the presence of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cyclic voltammetry is used to investigate the microscopic environments which occurs at the glassy carbon electrode. In order to see the relation between ${\Delta}E_p$ and a critical micelle concentration (CMC), ${\Delta}E_p$ vs. -Log[SDS] for the redox couples are plotted. The concentration at the intersection of two lines is 2.57 mM SDS, and this concentration can be determined as the CMC (relative error: below 0.03%; 2.63 mM SDS by surface tensiometry).
A surfactant is used to assist the effect of cleaning, dispersibility and adhesion during leather manufacturing process. Existing surfactant for that process includes many hydrophilic groups that may cause problem such as stain, bad water resistance and poor durability, etc. It is potential problem to make high-performance property for future leather market. In this study, we have synthesized the fluorinated surfactant of which property decreases surface tension, increases dispersion, cleaning effect and the better chrome absorption by the high bond energy of C-F to complement weakness that the present alkyl derivative surfactants have. Using fluorinated surfactant, we can confirm that dispersion is increased, chrome absorption ratio is augmented with high osmosis and coherence, chrome content in the tanning waste water is reduced, BOD and COD contents are diminished and physical characteristics are improved.
Purpose: The study aims to evaluate satisfaction of toothpaste adding natural materials extracted from Zanthoxylum schinifolium and various herbs (Pine, Lemongrass, Spearmint). Methods: We performed the first survey to collect basic data for the development of natural herbal toothpaste. Participants were the general public in Jeonju and Iksan of Jeollabuk-do, and a total of 273 questionnaires were analyzed for the study. By adding anthoxylum schinifolium and herbal extracts (Pine, Lemongrass, Spearmint) to the toothpaste, four kinds of natural herbal toothpaste prototypes were manufactured. The second survey was conducted to assess the satisfaction one week after using the natural herbal toothpaste prototypes. Results: Satisfaction with current toothpaste was 3.52. The most important criterion of toothpaste was the prevention of tooth caries. 55.3% participants obtained toothpaste information through advertising. The survey indicated the most worrisome ingredient of toothpaste was surfactant, showing 55.3%. The overall satisfaction of natural herbal toothpaste was 3.99; among the four natural herbal toothpaste, toothpaste 2 (Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Lemongrass) showed the highest satisfaction as 3.99; and toothpaste 3 (Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Spearmint) showed the lowest satisfaction as 3.56. Conclusion: Four kinds of natural herbal toothpaste showed higher satisfaction as 3.99. In particular, the toothpaste adding Zanthoxylum schinifolium and Lemongrass extracts.

The skin is divided into three parts: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous fat, and the stratum corneum, which is located at the top of the epidermis, acts as a barrier that prevents drug delivery. Nanoemulsions are known to be effective in transdermal delivery of drugs through intercellular lipids because of their unique small particle size. In this study, phase inversion temperature (PIT) nanoemulsion containing α-bisabolol was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) for effective skin absorption of α-bisabolol. As a preliminary experiment, the 25-2 fractional factorial design method and the 23 full factorial design method were performed. Box-Behnken design was performed based on the results of the factorial design method. The content of surfactant (6.3~12.6%), co-surfactant (5.2~7.8%) and α-bisabolol (0.5~5.0%) were used as factors, and the dependent variable was the particle size of the nanoemulsion. PIT nanoemulsion optimization was performed according to the RSM results, and as a result, the optimal nanoemulsion formulation conditions were predicted to be 10.4% surfactant content, 6.3% co-surfactant content, and 5.0% α-bisabolol content. As a result of the skin absorption test, the final skin absorption rate of the PIT nanoemulsion was 35.11±1.01%, and the final skin absorption rate of the general emulsion as a control was 28.25±1.69%, confirming that the skin absorption rate of the PIT nanoemulsion was better.
