  • Considering the immense applicability of isoprene rubbers, such as natural rubber (NR) and synthetic polyisoprene rubber (IR), attempts are being made to introduce more functionality within the rubber structure, e.g. epoxidation, to widen their technological viability. Epoxidation introduces polar epoxy bonds into the rubber molecular chain, resulting in enhanced intermolecular interactions among the rubber chains, increasing the oil resistance and air impermeability. Although there have been many reports on the epoxidation of NR in its latex form, there has been no such report using its solid form (or gum), which limits the epoxidation in terms of portability. Furthermore, the gum form has longer lifetime, while the latex form has limited lifetime for its efficient use. In this study, the epoxidation of natural rubber and polyisoprene rubber (using meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (mCPBA) as the epoxidizing agent) by dissolving their gum in hexane (i.e., the solution method) have been studied and compared. The effects of the amount of mCPBA, reaction time, and reaction temperature were investigated. The present process is easy and facilitates the epoxidation of rubbers in their solid form; therefore, it can be used for industrial upscaling of epoxidized rubber production.

  • Using a test apparatus developed Lrt the laboratory, frictional characteristics of natural rubbers have been analyzed by experimental study. Friction coefficient has been calculated from the measured normal force and friction force under various speeds, loads, and temperatures. The relations between the various operating conditions and friction coefficients have been verified. Especially, drag friction due to the visco-elastic behavior of the rubber has been observed in this analysis.

  • Vibration-resistant rubbers, whose elastic and shear behaviors are similar to viscoelastic materials, are used to make bracing dampers to reduce the building vibration. Experimental study is carried out to find the vibration characteristics of the dampers installed in the building model. The natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are obtained from the free vibration test and Fourier analysis. Shaking table test is performed to find the response behavior of the building model under earthquake loading. The present experimental study shows that the bracing dampers have the behavior of viscoelastic dampers, which increase the modal damping ratios and viscoelastic characteristics.

  • Rubbers, such as natural rubber, polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene rubber, nitrile-butadiene rubber, chlorinated rubber and EPDM, have been continuously improved in response to a heavy demand and a new property requirement from industry. One of the best ways to realize the improvement is the modification of rubbers through chemical reactions, which produce materials with novel properties. In this review, chemical modification reactions of rubbers that contain carbon-carbon double bond units either in their main backbone or as a side group were briefly summarized. The chemical reactions introduce functional groups or functional polymer chains to polymer backbone, which transform a classical rubber to a highly functional material. Especially, we focused on a controlled/"living" radical polymerization techniques, with which a revolutionary broadening of the spectrum of the materials with well defined molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chain end-functionality and architectures become possible.

  • Applying design methodology, new type friction tester has been developed. Functional analysis has been executed and functional structure were constructed during the conceptual design. Optimal solution has been selected and a proto model has been manufactured according to the conceptual design. Using the tester developed in the laboratory, frictional characteristics of natural rubbers have been experimentally analyzed. Friction coefficient has been calculated from the measured normal force and friction force under various speeds, loads, and temperatures. The corelations between the various operating conditions and friction coefficients have been verified. • Fundamental properties and surface treatment effects of domestic kaolin calcined at higher temperature were studied to develop reinforcing fillers for rubbers. The results obtained are as follows: (i) X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy studies revealed kaolinite as a major constituent of the raw kaolin used in this study. (ii) Physical properties of natural rubber vulcanizates compounded with the calcined kaolin fillers treated with poly(maleic anhydride) and sodium polyphosphate are favorably improved. Particularly, the kaolin filler treated with sodium polyphosphate(designated as PT series) shows excellent physical properties compared with hydrated silica.

  • The effect of curing temperature increase and sulfur amount added were studied with natural and synthetic rubbers. Also, the effects of TMTD, MBTS and mixture of zinc soaps of high molecular fatty acids added to natural rubber were investigated respectively. The experimental results showed that, in the case of the conventional curing ($145^{\circ}C$), natural rubber, compared with synthetic rubber, gave higher values in elongation, tensile strength, cure rate, and lower values in modulus change. But, at high temperature curing ($180^{\circ}C$), natural rubber showed faster reversion rate, and higher heat build-up compared to synthetic rubber, than in the conventional curing. Also, natural rubber produced at high temperature showed severe degradation in hardness and tensile strength before heat-aging as well as in hardness, modulus and tensile strength after heat-aging. Improved reversion effect was obtained with natural rubber either by blending mixture of zinc soaps of high molecular acids or by applying semi-efficient vulcanization system.

  • Influence of rubber composition on migration of antiozonants to the surface in ternary rubber-based vulcanizates composed of natural rubber (NR) styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and butadiene rubber (BR) was studied. Of the three rubbers, contents of two rudders were same and only the other one content was different (variable rubber) IPPD and HPPD were employed as antiozonants. Migration experiments were performed at $60^{\circ}C$ for 21 days and outdoors for 4 months. Migration rates of the antiozonants increase by increasing the content ratio of the variable rubber in the vulcanizares from NR/SBR/BR=1/1/0.2 to 1/1/1 and then decrease with an increase of the content ratio of the variable rudder from 1/1/1 to 1/1/5. Migration behaviors of the antiozonants in the ternary rudder-based vulcanizates depending on the rubber composition were explained by the intermolecular interactions between rubber and antiozonant, by the solubility difference of the antiozonants for the rubbers, and by the interface formed between dissimilar rubbers in the triblends.

  • The dielectric properties of natural rubbers for electric safety are very important to investigate the molecular structure. The electric safety characteristics of the dielectric absorption in aging vulcanized natural rubber were studied in the range of frequency from 1$\times$10$^3$[Hz]to 3.2$\times$10$^3$[Hz]l at the temperature of 23[$^{\circ}C$]. As the results, it has been confirmed that in the case of aging natural rubber of above 2 phr the specimens exhibit two kinds of dielectric losses due to the dipole polarization by impurities and sulfurs, and of raw rubber exhibit the kind of losses due to the dipole polarization. Rurthermore, dielectric loss maximum tansspectrum in high freguency region for electric safety, which removed to the low freguency according to increasing sulfur, depends greatly on sulfur.
