Preparation of Alginate/Chitosan Microcapsules and Enteric Coated Granules of Mistletoe Lectin

  • The aqueous extract of European mistletoe (Viscum album, L.) has been used in cancer therapy. The purified mistletoe lectins, main components of mistletoe, have demonstrated cytotoxic and immune-system-stimulating activities. Korean mistletoe (Viscum album L. coloratum), a subspecies of European mistletoe, has also been reported to possess anticancer and immunological activities. A galactose- and N-acetyl-D-galactosamine-specific lectin (Viscum album L. coloratum agglutinin, VCA) with Mr 60 kDa was isolated from Korean mistletoe. Mistletoe preparations have been given subcutaneously due to the low stability of lectin in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the present study, we investigated the possibility of alginate/chitosan microcapsules as a tool for oral delivery of mistletoe lectin. In addition, our strategy has been to develop a system composed of stabilizing cores (granules), which contain mistletoe lectin, extract or powder, coated by a biodegradable polymer wall. Our results indicated that successful incorporation of VCA into alginate/chitosan microcapsules has been achieved and that the alginate/chitosan microcapsule protected the VCA from degradation at acidic pH values. And coating the VCA with polyacrylic polymers, Eudragit, produced outstanding results with ideal release profiles and only minimal losses of cytotoxicity after manufacturing step. The granules prepared with extract or whole plant produced the best results due to the stability in the extract or whole plant during manufacturing process.

  • The content analysis of 6-gingerol, which is an active compound, in Zingiber spp. (Z. officinale and Z. mioga) and their commercial foods (ginger teas and powders) was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography. A reverse phase system was used, with a gradient solvent system of water and acetonitrile. The 6-gingerol content was highest in the methanol extract of Z. officinale root (17.09 mg/g extract) and ginger powder B (15.92 mg/g extract). The results demonstrated that this method was simple and reliable for the quality control of Zingiber commercial foods.

  • Ocimum sanctum, the Indian holy basil has significant abilities to scavenge highly reactive free radicals. Shade dried leaf powder of plant has extracted with water and alcohol, fractionated with different solvents. Both extracts and their fractions were found to be good scavengers of Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. Free radical scavenging action of these compared with ascorbic acid, a known antioxidant.

  • For distinguish between Lophatherum gracile and Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis based on natural shape and external-internal morphology of medicinal shape, general contents of oriental medicine were rearranged through bibliography. As a result, two medicinal stuffs indicated the difference in shape and structure(external-internal and powder)of origin plant bibiliographically. After this, this contents were utilized to give proof of many effective difference between two medicinal stuff.

Dyeing Protein Fiber to Green Color Using Natural Mugwort and Indigo (천연 쑥과 쪽을 이용한 단백질 섬유의 녹색 염색)

  • We need to diversify the colors by natural dyeing for promotion and extention of the natural dyes market, because natural dyestuffs have the limitation the number of the colors to express, compare to synthetic dyestuffs. It was investigated that wool and silk fabrics could be dyed to green colors using natural mugwort and indigo as one of color diversification, in order to express green color that is difficult to be shown by natural dyeing. The mugwort dyebath was prepared to concentration of $25{\sim}100g/l$ using dried mugwort plant and indigo dyebath was prepared to concentration of $5{\sim}20g/l$ using natural indigo powder. Wool fabrics and silk fabrics were dyed to green(GY, G, BG in Munsell color wheel) by two batch methods using the mugwort and indigo dyebaths. the mugwort dyeing was applied at $80^{\circ}C$ for 20minutes and indigo dyeing applied for $5{\sim}7$ minutes in room temperature. The colorfastness to drycleaning and abrasion of the dyed fabrics were shown good as grade 4-5 or 5.

  • To develop a new traditional rice liquor by using Mulberry leaves, the optimal condition of fermentation was investigated by addition of different concentrations (1%, 3%, and 5%) of Mulberry leaves powder in the raw rice mash. The efficiency of ethanol production of all conditioned groups were not inhibited by addition Mulberry leaves. The acceptability and antimicrobial activity of the Mulberry leaves liquor with different concentrations of Mulberry leaves powder were tested. The 3% Mulberry leaves liquor showed the best acceptability in the sensory evaluation test and color test. The antimicrobial activity against Helicobacter pylori were increased according to added amount of Mulberry leaves. It was supposed that the antimicrobial activity were affected by phenolic compound extracted from Mulberry leaves with ethanol produced during the fermentation period. The results suggested that the Mulberry leaves can be useful source to develop a new traditional rice liquor.

  • Kampilla is an important herbal drug of indigenous system of medicine. Fruit dust of Mallotus philippensis Muell-Arg constitutes the genuine drug Kampilla. However, due to limited distribution of this plant and its high medicinal value, the drug is heavily adulterated with the cheaper substances. Hence the present study was undertaken to evaluate both the authentic and market samples. The drug consists of resin glands and trichomes. Resin glands are lined by a delicate yellowish thin membrane and bear a pore at the tip. Quantitative standards of the drug powder showed 82.50% yield in total ash while alcohol soluble extract of market and authentic sample exhibit 0.97% and 3.458% respectively. The main adulterant noticed in the market sample is brick powder. Simple methods are suggested to identify the genuine drug.

  • The hydraulic structures such as aqueduct tunnels and the drainage canal of the hydroelectric power plant in Japan are almost old. Therefore, the concrete surface of the aqueduct tunnel has received damage by wear-out and the crack, etc. This study was to develop repair mortar mixed a coal ash coarse powder by using two kinds of high early strength cements. As a result, the repair mortar was obtained by substituting the EF cement (maid in Japan) and the MT cement (maid in South Korea) at a rate of 60:40, and substituting the coal ash 30% and the mixing rate 35% of the artificial aggregate for natural fine aggregate.

Assessing the Dyeing Properties of Bacterial Cellulose Using Plant-based Natural Dyes (식물성 천연염료에 의한 박테리아 셀룰로오스 섬유소재의 염색 특성)

  • This study aimed to assess the colorizing properties of bacterial cellulose (BC) using plant-based dyes, namely spinach, beet, and banana peel, and determine the dyeing conditions of each dye based on color strength (K/S) values. Tannic acid and walnut shell powder were utilized as bio-mordants, and their effects on the dyeability of BC were compared to metallic mordants. Additionally, the type of mordant and the mordanting method were assessed according to their rubbing fastness and dry-cleaning fastness. The K/S values of the colorized and mordanted BCs were also compared to examine their mordanting conditions. Finally, the mordanting conditions for spinach, beet, and banana peel dyeing were selected as post-mordanting with tannic acid, meta-mordanting with tannic acid, and post-mordanting with walnut shell powder, respectively. Based on the results, the selected mordanting conditions improved both rubbing fastness and dry-cleaning fastness of BCs to grade 5, and the light fastness achieved grade 4-5. The tensile strength and flexibility of the dyed BCs were also enhanced and comparable to that of untreated cowhide leather.

  • Control efficacies of mixing of powdery mildew biofungicides with other control agents against major or fungal diseases of cucumber were investigated. Control efficacies against cucumber powdery mildew were quite different according to the kinds of biofungicides applied but those of powdery mildew biofungicides were increased by mixing application of two biofungicides. More than 80% of control efficacies on powdery and downy mildews of cucumber were obtained by mixing application of a powdery mildew biofungicide Bacillus subtilis KB-401 and a downy mildew chemical fungicide dimethomorph. Similarly, control efficacies on powdery and downy mildews of cucumber were 95% and 70% by mixing application of a powdery mildew biofungicide Bacillus subtilis KB-401 and cooking oils and yolk mixture, respectively.
