This paper introduces the concept of a virtual ecosystem and reports the following three mathematical approaches that could be widely used to construct such an ecosystem, along with examples: (1) a molecular dynamics simulation approach for animal flocking behavior, (2) a stochastic lattice model approach for termite colony behavior, and (3) a rule-based cellular automata approach for biofilm growth. The ecosystem considered in this study consists of artificial organisms and their environment. Each organism in the ecosystem is an agent that interacts autonomously with the dynamic environment, including the other organisms within it. The three types of model were successful to account for each corresponding ecosystem. In order to accurately mimic a natural ecosystem, a virtual ecosystem needs to take many ecological variables into account. However, doing so is likely to introduce excess complexity and nonlinearity in the analysis of the virtual ecosystem's dynamics. Nonetheless, the development of a virtual ecosystem is important, because it can provide possible explanations for various phenomena such as environmental disturbances and disasters, and can also give insights into ecological functions from an individual to a community level from a synthetic viewpoint. As an example of how lower and higher levels in an ecosystem can be connected, this paper also briefly discusses the application of the second model to the simulation of a termite ecosystem and the influence of climate change on the termite ecosystem.
Study courses using cognitive conflict strategy about geological stratum were performed on the 6th grade elementary students and their conceptual changes were investigated. Some misconceptions about geological stratum that the students have are as follows: (1) stratum was formed due to volcanic eruption, (2) gneiss composes the geological stratum, (3) folds in the stratum were formed due to vertical pressure from the top. The classes had positive effects on the changes of some the misconceptions: (1) the places where the stratum is filmed, (2) the kind of rock in the stratum, and (3) the reason for folding. However, there were no significant changes in the following items: (1) the reason that every layer consists of different sizes of grains. It shows that some misconceptions can be changed easily by cognitive conflict strategy, while others can not. We checked the students who didn't change their misconceptions after the test. These students have very strong misconceptions that most of the natural phenomena on the earth's surface are due to the internal heat pressure, and volcanic activity. Another affecting the students' misconceptions are the role of teachers in class and mass media, such as TV.
Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the pre- and postsurgical bone densities at alveolar and extra-alveolar sites following two-jaw orthognathic surgery. Methods: The sample consisted of 10 patients (mean age, 23.2 years; range, 18.0-27.8 years; 8 males, 2 females) who underwent two-jaw orthognathic surgery. A three-dimensional imaging program (Invivo 5) was used with multidetector computed tomography images taken pre- and postoperatively (obtained 32.3 ± 6.0 days before surgery and 5.8 ± 2.6 days after surgery, respectively) for the measurement of bone densities at the following sites: (1) alveolar bone in the maxilla and mandible, (2) extra-alveolar sites, such as the top of the head, menton (Me), condyle, and the fourth cervical vertebrae (C4). Results: When pre- and postsurgical bone densities were compared, an overall tendency of decrease in bone density was noted. Statistically significant reductions were observed in the densities of cancellous bone at several areas of the maxillary alveolar bone; cortical and cancellous bone in most areas of the mandibular alveolar bone; cortical bone in Me; and cancellous bone in C4. There was no statistically significant difference in bone density in relation to the depth of the alveolar bone. In a comparison of the bone densities between groups with and without genioplasty, there was almost no statistically significant difference. Conclusions: Accelerated tooth movement following orthognathic surgery may be confirmed with reduced bone density. In addition, this study could offer insights into bone metabolism changes following orthognathic surgery, providing direction for further investigations in this field.
Classified handmade Korean paper which has been commonly used as the material for the paper cultural assets divide into four classes. We irradiated xenon arc lamp, which has almost the same spectrum distribution as natural sunlight, to test photo-induced of discoloration according to PEG molecular weight and concentration. So, we reach the followings. 1) Unbleached handmade Korean paper with PEG showed rapid decrease of brightness for 10 hours after photo-irradiation, regardless of molecular weight of PEG, but, after 10 hours, it showed gradual increase of brightness. From this, it proved that there was an effect of preventing discoloration of photo-irradiation. 2) Chemical bleached handmade Korean paper showed increase of brightness after 20 hours. Though time was delayed in increase of brightness, there was also an effect of preventing discoloration of photo-irradiation in chemical bleached paper. 3) Handmade Korean paper made with abet-mosk showed the lowest of brightness when it was tested on 400-20% PEG. Before photo-irradiation, the brightness of paper, applied it, was the lowest, but it showed the least difference of brightness after photo-irradiation. From this, it proved that there was the greatest effect of preventing discoloration in this paper. 4) Preventing yellowish, the first phenomena by photo-irradiation ageing with applying PEG was proved that there was the decrease of value of $b^*$ +, and increase value of $L^*$, which could fairly prevent decrease of brightness.
Interactions between proteins and genes are often considered essential in the description of biomolecular phenomena and networks of interactions are considered as an entre for a Systems Biology approach. Recently, many works try to extract information by analyzing biomolecular text using natural language processing technology. Previous researches insist that linguistic information is useful to improve the performance in detecting gene interactions. However, previous systems do not show reasonable performance because of low recall. To improve recall without sacrificing precision, this paper proposes a new method for detection of gene interactions based on syntactic relations. Without biomolecular knowledge, our method shows reasonable performance using only small size of training data. Using the format of LLL05(ICML05 Workshop on Learning Language in Logic) data we detect the agent gene and its target gene that interact with each other. In the 1st phase, we detect encapsulation types for each agent and target candidate. In the 2nd phase, we construct verb lists that indicate the interaction information between two genes. In the last phase, to detect which of two genes is an agent or a target, we learn direction information. In the experimental results using LLL05 data, our proposed method showed F-measure of 88% for training data, and 70.4% for test data. This performance significantly outperformed previous methods. We also describe the contribution rate of each phase to the performance, and demonstrate that the first phase contributes to the improvement of recall and the second and last phases contribute to the improvement of precision.
Due to its unique formation and mystery phenomena, comets is a major motif that inspires various creative fields. Media art that has been developed and expanded in step with the development of modern scientific technology has expressed the unique characteristics of comets such as their structure in the art as a motif, using technologies. This study describes the process of producing "Near by", an distance-recognition interactive media art. offering the audience a chance to create a tail of a comet as they close to it. changes the color of a LED structure representing the nucleus of a comet as the audience approaches it. At the same time, a video of a comet's tail is projected. Through this interaction, the audience will renew their perception on comets and emotionally interact with the art. This work capturing not only the formative characteristics of a comet, but also its forming process as a motif. Such composite way of expressing a motif could be presented as a possibility of extending the expression of the natural phenomenon in the future media art field.
To investigate spatial and temporal variations of low-frequency (${\leq}5Hz$) ambient seismic noise, we analyzed the noise data recorded for one whole year of 2014 at surface accelerometer stations in South Korea. After decomposed into low-frequency (LF; < 1 Hz) and high-frequency (HF; ${\geq}1Hz$) components, the root-mean-squared (RMS) amplitudes and power spectral densities (PSD) of the noise data were computed. The RMS amplitudes were larger on islands and near-shore stations, but also large RMS amplitudes were observed at inland stations in large cities only for HF components. The RMS amplitudes of HF components were larger in the daytime than at nighttime and during weekdays than on Sunday and holidays. This indicates the HF components are closely related to human activities. On the contrary, daily and weekly variations were not clear in the LF components while they showed seasonal variations with its maximum during the winter and a good correlation with significant wave height. Therefore, we interpret the mechanism of LF components is closely related to natural phenomena such as sea. The amplitude of LF components decreased as an exponential function of the distance to the center of typhoons. The exponential index of -0.76 suggested that ambient seismic noise included both surface and body waves. Peak frequencies of the PSD curves were near 0.34 Hz indicating the double frequency. No temporal variation in the peak frequency was clearly noticed.
A new piece of test equipment, the slurry wear tester (SWT), was proposed in this study to evaluate the wear behavior of rubber vulcanizate in environmental contact with slurry. Natural rubber (NR) and chloroprene rubber (CR) were chosen as the basic matrices to test the slurry wear. The fluids used to fill the chamber of the SWT were 35% HCl and NaCl solution. The Akron abrasion test was used for comparison with SWT. According to the results of the Akron abrasion test, CR vulcanizate abraded more rapidly than NR vulcanizate under same test condition. It was found that the hysteresis of rubber was key factor contribute to the wear behavior. However, the slurry wear rate of the NR and CR vulcanizates did not change significantly, even with changes in the concentration of acid and the immersion time in both HCl and NaCl solutions; the fluid decreased the friction between the abrasive paper and the specimen. It also reduced the heat generated from repeated deformation and wear debris at the surface of the SWT's abrasion arm. Thus, these phenomena affected the wear behavior of rubber vulcanizate and caused different results in the conventional Akron abrasion test. This outcome could have resulted in an incorrect analysis if the slurry wear behavior of the rubber vulcanizate was estimated by the conventional abrasion tests, which are operated under dry conditions.

In the summers of 1997 and 1998 and in February of 2000 we made 570 measurements of the ambient geomagnetic field 120 cm above the pavement surface of State Route 130, south of Pahoa, the island of Hawaii using a three-component fluxgate magnetometer. We measured at every 15.2 m (50 feet) interval covering a distance of 6, 310 m (20, 704 ft) where both historic and pre-historic highly magnetic basalt flows underlie. We also collected 197 core samples from eight road cuts, 489 specimens of which were subject to AF demagnetizations at 5 - 10 mT level up to a maximum field of 60 mT. We observed significant inclination anomalies ranging from a minimum of $31^{\circ}$ to a maximum $40^{\circ}$ where a uniform inclination value of $36.7^{\circ}$ (International Geomagnetic Reference Field, IGRF) was expected. Since the mean of the observed inclinations is approximately $35^{\circ}$ we assume that the study area is slightly affected by the magnetic terrain effect to a systematically shallower inclinations for being located in the regionally sloping surface of the southern side of the island (Baag, et al., 1995). We observed inclination anomalies showing wider (spacial) wavelength (160 - 600 m) and higher amplitudes in the historic lava flows area than in the northern pre-historic flows. Our observations imply that preexisting inclination anomalies such as those that we observed would have been interpreted as paleosecular variation (PSV). These inclination anomalies can best be attributed to concealed underground highly magnetic dikes, channel type lava flows, on-and-off hydrothermal activities through fissure-like openings, etc. Both the within- and between-site dispersions of natural remanent magnetization (NRM) are largest (up to ${\pm}7^{\circ}$) above the flows of 1955, while the area of pre-historic flows in the northern part of the study area exhibit the smallest dispersion. Nevertheless, mean inclinations of each historic flow of 1955 and 1790 are almost identical to that of the corresponding present field, whereas mean of NRM (after AF demagnetization) inclinations for each of the four pre-historic lava flow units is twelve to thirteen degrees lower than the present field inclination. We observed three cases of very large inclination variations from within a single flow, the best fitting curves of which are linear, second and third order polynomials each from within a single flow, whereas no present field variations are observed. This phenomena can be attributed to the notion that local magnetic anomalies on the surface of an active volcano are not permanent, but are transient. Therefore we believe that local magnetic anomalies of an active volcano may be constantly modified due to on going subsurface injections and circulations of hot material and also due to wide spacial and temporal distribution of highly magnetic basaltic flows that will constantly modify the topography which will in turn modify the local ambient geomagnetic field (Baag, et al., 1995). Our observations bring into question the general reliability of PSV data inferred from volcanic rocks, because on-going various geologic and geophysical activities associated with active volcano would continuously deflect and modify the ambient geomagnetic field.

This study was designed to identify, describe and classify orientations of cancer patient's family members to death and to identify factors related to their attitudes on death. Death to the male is understood as a comprehensive system and believed to be highly subjective experience. Therefore attitude on death is affected by personalities. As an attempt to measure the subjective meaning toward death, the unstructured Q-methodology was used. Korean Death Orientation Questonaire prepared by Kim was used. Item-reliability and Sorting-reliability were tested. Forty five cancer patients' family members hospitalized in one university medical center in Seoul were sampled. Sorting the 65 Q-itmes according to the level of personal agreement ; A forced normal distribution into the 11 levels, were carried out by the 45 P-samples. The demographic data and information related to death orientation of the P-sample was collected through face to face in depth interviews. Data was gathered from August 30 till September 22, 1995. The Z-scores of the Q-items were computed and principal component factor analysis was carried out by PC-QUANL Program. Three unique types of the death orientation were identified and labeled. Type I consists of twenty P-samples. Life and death was accepted as people's destiny, They firmly believed the existence of life after life. They kept aloof from death and their concern was facing the and of the life with dignity, They were in favor of organ donation. Type II consists of Nine P-Samples. They considered that death was the end of everything and did not believed the life after life. They were very concerned about the present life. Type III consists of Sixteen P-samples. They regarded the death as a natural phenomena. And they considered that the man is just a traveller and is bound to head for the next life which is believed to be free of agony, pain or darkness. They neither feared death nor its process. Their conserns were on the activities to prepare themselves for the eternal-life after death. Thus, it was concluded that there were three distinctiven type of attitudes on death among cancer patient family members, and their death attitudes were affected by demographic and socio-cultural factors such as sex, education, and religion.
