The results of a simulation study of variable liquid column oscillations in U-tanks with a novel control scheme are presented. The configuration under investigation is analogous to that of the tuned liquid-column damper used to suppress oscillatory motion in large structures like tall buildings and cargo ships. However, by virtue of an adequate controller, the response of amplitude of the U-tanks becomes larger in a desired frequency range. The motion of wave energy conversion system equipped with a variable liquid column oscillator is described by a series of nonlinear differential equations. The equations describe the motion of body under ocean wave excitation, and the motion of liquid with an air-spring effect caused by the compression and expansion of air in vertical liquid columns and air chambers. It is shown that the effect of the air-spring has a vital role to maintain the natural frequency of oscillation in the system to synchronize with the frequency of the ocean wave, thus the system provides the most effective mode for energy extraction from the ocean.

Heat dissipation technology using the flow resonant phenomenon is a kind of a new concept in the heat transfer area. A vibration exciter is needed to enhance air flow mixing which has the natural shedding frequency of thermal system. A mechanical vibrating device for the air flow oscillation is introduced, which is driven by a moving coil actuator with a displacement estimator using strain gage. An analytical dynamic model for this mechanical vibration exciter is presented and its validity is checked by the comparison with experimental data. Values of some unknown system parameters in the analytic model are estimated through the system identification approach. Based on this mathematical model, the vibration exciter using strain displacement estimator is developed. During the experimental verification phase, it turns out the high modal resonant characteristics of a vibrating plate are a major barrier against obtaining a high bandwidth vibration exciter.

In this study, an analytical model of micro-beam structure including thermoelastic damping with irregularly distributed masses is investigated. The significance of thermoelastic damping for micro-scale mechanical resonators is evaluated to design -with high quality factor(Q-factor). The beam model of this work is based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. In order to determine the natural frequency of the model, energy method is applied. Also, the thermoelatic damping effects are considered by using heat conduction equations, and the Q-factor can be determined. To derive the equation of motion, non-dimensionalization is employed for systematic analysis. Results of the model are verified, and present mode shapes and Q-factors for the micro-beam with thermoelastic damping including random point masses.

Tight fitting glove pattern is necessary to convey oscillation to the skin from the sensors attached on the hands as found in the haptic device. However, it has been difficult to provide customized glove pattern for haptic device so far. The objective of the paper is to develop a 2D pattern that fit tightly to hands by adopting the recent 3D technology to the clothing science. In this study, the user graphic interface application software(2C-AN) for the semi-automatic garment pattern generation has been utilized to develop the methodology of construct tight-fitting glove pattern for the hand in natural position. A basic pattern was developed directly from the 3D images of hand and the verification of the proposed pattern was also provided.

The effect of oscillating on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. Our study is to analyze the vortex formation behind a circular cylinder for different rotary oscillation conditions. And then we are study to portray the unsteady dynamics of wake flows. We decide lock-on region by observing the phase switching phenomena We classify the vortex formation patterns in the primary lock-on region The present study is to identify the quasi-periodic state around lock-on region. At the boundary between lock-on and non-lock-on the shedding frequency is bifurcated. After the bifurcation, one frequency follow the forcing frequency ($S_f$) and the other returns to the natural shedding frequency ($St_0$). In the quasi-periodic state, the variation of magnitudes and relevant phase changes of $C_L$ with forcing phase are examined.
Although the geometry of circular cylinder is simple, the flow is complicate because of the flow separation and vortex shedding. In spite of many numerical and experimental researches, the flow around a circular cylinder has not been clarified even now. It has been known that the unsteady vortex shedding from a circular cylinder can vibrate and damage a structure. Lock-on phenomenon is very important in the flow around an oscillating circular cylinder. The lock-on phenomenon is that when the oscillation frequency of the circular cylinder is at or near the frequency of vortex shedding from a stationary cylinder, the vortex shedding synchronizes with the cylinder motion. This phenomenon can be recognized by the spectral analysis of the lift coefficient history. At the lock-on region the vortex is shedding by the modulated frequency to the body frequency. However, the vortex is shedding by the mixed frequencies of natural shedding and forced body frequency in the region of non-lock-on. In this paper, it was analyzed the relation between the frequency of rotary oscillating circular cylinder and the vortex shedding frequency.

Given the rapid progress made in understanding the dynamics of an offshore floating body in an ocean environment, the present study aimed to simulate ocean waves in a small-sized wave flume and to observe the motion of a cylindrical floating body placed in an offshore environment. To generate regular ocean waves in a wave flume, we combined a wave generator and a wave absorber. In addition, to precisely visualise the oscillation of the body, a set of light-emitting diode illuminators and a high-speed charge-coupled device camera were installed in the flume. This study also focuses on the spectral analysis of the movement of the floating body. The wave generator and absorbers worked well to simulate stable regular waves. In addition, the simulated waves agreed well with the plane waves predicted by shallow-water theory. As the period of the oncoming waves changed, the movement of the floating body was substantially different when tethered to a tension-leg mooring cable. In particular, when connected to the tension-leg mooring cable, the natural frequency of the floating body appeared suddenly at 0.391 Hz as the wave period increased.

This paper presents a technique to model and control a manipulator which has a flexible link and moves in a vertical plane. The flexible link is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli Beam. Elastic deformation of the flexible link is represented using the assumed modes method. A comparison function which satisfies all geometric and natural boundary conditions of a cantilever beam with an end mass is used as an assumed mode shape. Lagrange's equation is utilized for the development of a discretized model. This paper presents a simple technique to improve the correctness of the developed model. The final model including the shortening effect due to elastic deformation correlates very well with experimental results. The free body motion simulation shows that two assumed modes for the representation of the elastic deformation is proper in terms of the model size and correctness. A control algorithm is developed using PID control technique. The proportional, integral and derivative control gains are determined based on dominant pole placement method with a rigid one-link manipulator. A position control simulation shows that the control algorithm can be used to control the position and residual oscillation of the flexible one-link manipulator effectively.
Rheological behavior of natural hydrogel produced from seeds of three Salvia spp. (S. miltiorrhiza (SM), S. sclarea (SS), S. viridis (SV)) was investigated by using a Rheometer equipped with a cone and plate geometry measuring system under never-dried condition. Different chemical contents of such hydrogels give significant effects on their rheological properties. Because of incomplete penetration of water inside the hydrogels after drying before-dried hydrogels were used for rheological analysis. To know molecular interactions which predominated in the gel formation, some constituents were externally added to the 1.0% (w/w) hydrogel. Addition of urea to disrupt hydrogen bonds reduced 3.4-67% viscosity of the untreated hydrogels and changed viscoelastic properties from gel to liquid-like behavior. Neutral salts added to the hydrogel solution at 0.1 M also lowered the viscosity in a manner related with increase in size of cations and temperature. Changing from gel state to liquid-like state was also easily confirmed by oscillation measurement (storage, G', and loss, G", modulii) typically observed in the cases of potassium sulfate and potassium thiocyanate. Influence of pH variation on the viscosity explained that weak alkaline condition (pH 8-9) creates a higher resistance to flow due to increasingly electrostatic repulsions between negative charges ($COO^-$) Importance of calcium bridges was also demonstrated by recovery of viscosity of the hydrogels by addition of calcium after acidification. The summarized results indicate that electrostatic repulsion is a major contributor for production of hydrogel structure.
If the safety depressurization system of APR-1400, the Korean next generation reactor, is in operation, water, air and steam are successively discharging into a in-containment refueling water storage tank through spargers. Among the phenomena occurring during the discharging processes, the air bubble clouds produce a low-frequency and high-amplitude oscillatory loading, which may result in the most significant damages to the submerged structures if the oscillation frequency is the same or close to the natural frequency of the structures. The involved phenomena are so complicated that most of the prediction of frequency and pressure loads has been resorted to experimental work and computational approach has been precluded. This study deals with a numerical simulation on the behavior of air bubble clouds discharging into a water pool through a sparger, by using a commercial thermal hydraulic analysis code, FLUENT, version 4.5. Among the multiphase flow models, the VOF (Volume Of Fluid) model was selected to simulate the water, air and steam flows. A satisfactory result was obtained comparing the analysis results with the ABB-Atom test results which had been performed for the development of sparser.
