  • Natural rivers have water purification functions called Gravel Contact Oxidation Process, which decontaminate river water by biological absorption, oxidation and degradation on riverbed gravels. This function has been developed and applied to many small/medium-sized urban rivers in Japan as one of the direct river water purification methods. However the method hasn't been verified in the tropics, which have different climate conditions and river characteristics. A preliminary experiment carried out at a polluted urban tributary in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia where an increasing attention has been paid to river environment, showed a good applicability to the tropical conditions as a technically practical water purification measure with some maintenance cares for sludge management.

  • This study researched cause of resonance noise for BLDC motor used in the refrigerator. it is difficult to measure dynamic characteristics for small sized fan & rotor system with conventional excitation method. Therefore this study performed electric exiting method and natural frequency method using microphone instead of conventional excitation and showed validity of these methods. Study result showed that tortional vibration frequency of fan & rotor system and natural bending frequency of the fan were matched with exciting frequency of BLDC motor caused by commutating ripple torque. And this frequency match caused resonance of the system. The study analyzed main parameters of this phenomenon and suggested alternative solution.

  • Let (H, B, .nu.) be an abstract Wiener space where H is a separable Hilbert space with the inner product <.,.> and the norm vertical bar . vertical bar=.root.<.,.>, which is densely and continuously imbedded into a separable Banach space B with the norm ∥.∥ , and .nu. is a probability measure on the Borel .sigma.-algebra B(B) of B which satisfies (Fig.) where $B^{*}$ is the topological dual of B and (.,.) is the natural dual pairing between B and $B^{*}$. We will regard $B^{*}$.contnd.H.contnd.B in the natural way. Thus we have =(y, x) for all y in $B^{*}$ and x in H. Let $R^{n}$ and C denote the n-dimensional Euclidean space and the complex numbers respectively.ctively.

  • Natural alpha radiation produced a stable defect center to certain minerals. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance(EPR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool f3r quantifying this defect center. EPR method has been applied to trace alpha-radiation effect around the uranium ore deposit. The results show that EPR technique can be used to measure rapidly and nondestructively the defect center produced by natural alpha radiation. In general, a good correlation was achieved between defect center concentration and actinide elements(U, Th). These results imply that the concentration of defect center is dependent on the alpha radiation dose over long time scale.

  • The interior noise of KTX in tunnel is becoming the problem since the commercial operating in April 2004. The major sources of interior noise for High speed train ate known as the aerodynamic noise and rolling noise generally. We measure the noise and vibration inside KTX in tunnel in order to find the cause of the interior noise of KTX. The analysis results show that the interior noise of KTX in tunnel with concrete track is increased sharply by a low frequency below 80Hz that is the natural frequency of the KTX carbody. We know that the booming noise inside KTX in tunnel with concrete track is generated by aerodynamic noise outside ganqway and rolling noise at the carbody natural frequency.

  • In this paper, we analyse and present mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure rates of turn about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the rotation of the gyroscope main body. • Magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies play a critical role in shaping up the intracluster medium. Their existence has been established through observations of synchrotron emission, especially from radio relics and halos, as well as observations of rotation measure. In the so-called Sausage relic, which is one of Mpc-size giant radio relics detected in the outskirts of merging clusters, for instance, the magnetic fields are believed to have a few ${\mu}G$ strength and a Mpc scale. The observed magnetic fields are conjectured to be produced by the process of small-scale turbulence dynamo. To investigate the dynamo origin, we simulate the development of turbulence and the follow-up amplification of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical(MHD) code. Turbulence is induced in highly stratified backgrounds expected in clusters, and driven sporadically mimicking major mergers. We here present preliminary results, aiming to answer whether the turbulence dynamo scenario can explain observed magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies.

  • New technologies and techniques to extract natural gas and gas liquids, as well as petroleum, from shale rock have greatly altered expectations for North America's capacity to produce energy products. As a result of innovations such as hydraulic fracturing, some government, industry, and academic observers have predicted that the United States will soon become energy self-sufficient and possibly become a net exporter of natural gas and petroleum. This paper will cover literature review and measure the potential impacts on economic growth and development. Fracking, renewable energy are just a few of the things that have reshaped the energy picture over the past 20 years, how much it will change in the next 20 years and the impacts on the economy will be discussed.

  • The natural convection of a horizontal layer heated from below in a three-dimensional rectangular enclosure was dealt with both numerically and experimentally. The aspect ratios are 1:2:3.5 and Boussinesq fluid is water with the Prandtl number of 5.0. This experimental study showed how to measure the variation of temperature field in a 3-D rectangular enclosure with small aspect ratios by using TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal) and color capturing technique. The experimental temperature field had periodic characteristics of 75 sec at Ra=2.37*10$^{5}$ . But the numerical convection flow had periodic characteristics of 79 sec at the same Rayleigh number. In three dimensional computation it was found that the convection roll structure bifurcated from four rolls to two rolls as the Rayleigh number is increased.

  • A dynamic draft model is necessary to analyze mechanics of tillage and to design optimal tillage tools. In order to deal with draft dynamics, a neural network paradigm was applied to develop dynamic draft models. For the development of the models, three kinds of tillage tools were used to measure drafts in the soil bin and a time lagged recurrent neural network was developed. The neural network had a structure to predict dynamic draft, having a function of one-step-ahead prediction. A procedure for network prediction model identification was established. The results show promising modeling of the dynamic drafts with developed neural network.
