Flexural Characteristics of Coir Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites

  • This study has examined the flexural properties of natural and chemically modified coir fiber reinforced cementitious composites (CFRCC). Coir fibers of two different average lengths were used, and the longer coir fibers were also treated with a 1% NaOH solution for comparison. The fibers were combined with cementitious materials and chemical agents (dispersant, defoamer or wetting agent) to form CFRCC. The flexural properties of the composites, including elastic stress, flexural strength, toughness and toughness index, were measured. The effects of fiber treatments, addition of chemical agents and accelerated ageing of composites on the composites' flexural properties were examined. The results showed that the CFRCC samples were 5-12 % lighter than the conventional mortar, and that the addition of coir fibers improved the flexural strength of the CFRCC materials. Toughness and toughness index, which were associated with the work of fracture, were increased more than ten times. For the alkalized long coir fiber composites, a higher immediate and long-term toughness index was achieved. SEM microstructure images revealed improved physicochemical bonding in the treated CFRCC.

  • 최근 환경문제가 대두되면서 기존의 석유계 플라스틱을 대체할 생분해성 플라스틱에 관심이 고조되고 잇다. 이에 본 실험에서는 토양에서 생분해가 가능한 셀룰로오스 디아세테이트/전분 혼합체를 제조하여 그 특성을 연구하였다. 이 혼합체에 가소제로 트리아세틴을 첨가하여 용융가공한 복합체의 물성을 조사하였다. 전분의 함량이 증가할수록 이 복합체의 가공성이 향상되며 인장강도와 탄성률은 감소하고 신율은 증가하였다. 전분의 함량이 증가하면 복합체의 $T_g$는 감소하였다. SEM을 이용하여 전분의 복합체내에서의 분산성을 관찰하였다.

에어로졸 공정을 이용한 오산화바나듐(V2O5)-그래핀 복합체 제조 및 슈퍼커패시터 응용 (Preparation of V2O5-Graphene Composites using Aerosol Process for Supercapacitors Application)

  • Vanadium Pentoxide (V2O5) has been emerged as alternative electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their low cost, natural abundance, and environmental friendliness. Graphene (GR) loaded with V2O5 can exhibit enhanced specific capacitance. In this study, we present three-dimensional (3D) crumpled graphene (CGR) decorated with V2O5. The V2O5-graphene composites were synthesized from a colloidal mixture of graphene oxide (GO) and Ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3), via aerosol spray drying and post heat treatment process. The average size of composite was ranged from 1.82 to 4.6 ㎛. Morphology of the composite changed from a crumpled paper ball to spherical ball having relatively smooth surface as the content of V2O5 increased in the composites. The electrochemical performance of the V2O5-graphene composites was examined. The V2O5-graphene composite electrode showed the specific capacitance of 312 F/g. In addition, the device possessed acceptable cyclic stability, with 84% after 2000 cycles at 2 A/g. These outstanding properties are expected to make the composites prepared in this study as promising electrode materials for supercapacitor applications.

친수성, 통기성 및 항균성이 향상된 고분자-세라믹 복합소재의 제조 및 물성 (Syntheses and Characterizations of Polymer-Ceramic Composites Having Increased Hydrophilicity, Air-Permeability, and Anti-Fungal Property)

  • 일반적으로 고분자 재질은 표면이 수분을 배척하는 소수성이며 또한 통기성이 좋지 못하다. 이러한 물성을 개질하기 위하여 고분자 플라스틱에 기능성 충전제로 친수성인 세라믹 입자와 항균입자를 혼합하여 친수성, 통기성 및 항균성이 향상 된 복합재료를 제조하였으며 표면 접촉각 측정, 공기투과시간 측정, 항균효과 관찰을 통해 물성을 확인하였다. 이러한 복합 재료는 건강관련 제품에 널리 이용될 수 있다.

공기와 물의 교매질 시스템에서 열노화된 천연고무 복합체의 회복 거동 (Recovery Behaviors of Natural Rubber Composites Thermally Aged in Altering Medium Systems of Air and Water)

  • 비충전, 카본블랙 충전, 그리고 실리카 충전 천연고무(NR) 복합체를 원형 변형 상태로 $60-90^{\circ}C$에서 노화시켜 회복 거동을 조사하였다. 시험편은 공기와 물을 매일 교대로 교체하는 교매질 시스템 하에서 노화시켰다. 충전시스템에 따른 회복률의 순서는 비보강 > 실리카 보강 > 카본블랙 보강 순이었다. 공기에서 물로 교체하는 교매질 시스템에서 노화된 시험편의 회복률이 물에서 공기로 교체하는 교매질 시스템에서 노화된 시험편의 회복률보다 더 컸다. 최초 노화 매질은 변형 정도에 지배적으로 영향을 끼쳤다.

Preparation and Characteristics of Core-Shell Structure with Nano Si/Graphite Nanosheets Hybrid Layers Coated on Spherical Natural Graphite as Anode Material for Lithium-ion Batteries

  • Silicon (Si) is recognized as a promising anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, under a condition of electrode comparable to commercial graphite anodes with low binder content and a high electrode density, the practical use of Si is limited due to the huge volume change associated with Si-Li alloying/de-alloying. Here, we report a novel core-shell composite, having a reversible capacity of ~ 500 mAh g-1, by forming a shell composed of a mixture of nano-Si, graphite nanosheets and a pitch carbon on a spherical natural graphite particle. The electrochemical measurements are performed using electrodes with 2 wt % styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and 2 wt.% carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) binder in an electrode density of ~ 1.6 g cm-3. The core-shell composites having the reversible capacity of 478 mAh g-1 shows the outstanding capacity retention of 99% after 100 cycles with the initial coulombic efficiency of 90%. The heterostructure of core-shell composites appears to be very effective in buffering the volume change of Si during cycling.

Predicting ESP and HNT effects on the mechanical properties of eco-friendly composites subjected to micro-indentation test

  • The main goal of the present study was to assess the effects of eggshell powder (ESP) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the mechanical properties of abaca fiber (AF)-reinforced natural composites. For this purpose, a limited number of indentation tests were first performed on the AF/polypropylene (PP) composites for different HNT and ESP loadings (0 wt.% ~ 6 wt.%), load amplitudes (150, 200, and 250 N), and two types of indenters (Vickers or conical). The Young's modulus, hardness and plasticity index of each specimen were calculated using the indentation test results and Oliver-Pharr method. The accuracy of the experimental results was confirmed by comparing the values of the Young's modulus obtained from the indentation test with the results of the conventional tensile test. Then, a feed-forward shallow artificial neural network (ANN) with high efficiency was trained based on the obtained experimental data. The trained ANN could properly predict the variations of the mentioned mechanical properties of AF/PP composites incorporated with different HNT and ESP loadings. Furthermore, the trained ANN demonstrated that HNTs increase the elastic modulus and hardness of the composite, while the incorporation of ESP reduces these properties. For instance, the Young's modulus of composites incorporated with 3 wt.% of ESP decreased by 30.7% compared with the pure composite, while increasing the weight fraction of ESP up to 6% decreased the Young's modulus by 34.8%. Moreover, the trained ANN indicated that HNTs have a more significant effect on reducing the plasticity index than ESP.

  • 미처리 Jute와 Hemp섬유와 처리된 Jute와 Hemp섬유가 강화된 polypropylene-maleic anhydride-g-polypropylene copolymer (PP-MAPP) 복합재료의 계면 물성을 미세역학시험법과 동적접촉각 측정을 통해서 평가하였다. Jute와 Hemp섬유의 통계적인 인장강도의 경우 두 형태 와이블 분포가 단일 형태 분포보다 더 일치하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 천연섬유 복합재료의 계면전단강도(IFSS)에 대한 산-염기 상호작용변수는 접착일($W_a$)의 계산을 통해 그 특성을 기술 할 수 있다. 천연섬유에 대한 알칼리, 실란커플링제의 영향은 PP-MAPP 기지재의 MAPP 함량을 변화시킴으로써 얻을 수 있었다. 알칼리 처리된 Jute와 Hemp섬유의 경우 약한 계면층이 모두 제거되고 표면적이 증가됨으로 인해 표면에너지는 더 증가하였다. 반면 실란 커플링제를 이용하여 표면 처리된 Jute와 Hemp 섬유의 경우 차단된 높은 에너지의 기들로 인해 표면에너지는 감소하였다. PP-MAPP기지재속의 MAPP의 함량증가는 산-염기 기의 도입으로 인해 표면에너지는 증가하였다. 두 천연섬유 복합재료의 미세파괴 형상은 두 섬유의 인장강도가 다르기 때문에 명확히 구분되었다.

Toughness of soft-hard composites and Wetting on Textured Substrates

  • In the first part, after discussing works on nacre, a soft-hard composite found in nature, including a simulation on network mimicking nacre [1-4], we talk on a simple model of spider webs, another example of natural soft-hard structure [5]. We demonstrate that the web network is free of stress concentrations because the radial threads are stronger than the spiral threads. In the second part, after reviewing our works on wetting on textured surfaces [6-8], we discuss penetration into textured surface and instability of a liquid film on textured substrates during spin coating [9,10].
