Regulation of pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis has been studied extensively in enteric bacteria and Bacillus species. Varieties of control modes have been proposed for regulation of pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthetic (pyr) genes. In Bacillus caldolyticus and B. subtilis, it has been proved that pyrimidine de novo biosynthetic operon is controlled by a regulatory protein PyrR-mediated attenuation. Another Gram-positive bacteria including Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus plantarum, and wctococcus lactis have been found to constitute a pyr gene cluster containing the pyrR gene. In addition, it has been proposed that the structure of the 5' leader region of the Gram-negative extreme thermophile Thermus strain Z05 pyr operon provides a novel mechanism of PyrR-dependent coupled transcription-translation attenuation. Bacterial genome sequencing projects have identified the PyrR homologues in Haemophilus influenzae, Synechocystis sp., Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes, and Clostridium acetobutylicum, which are currently investigating for their physiological functions.

This paper proposed an algorithm for extracting spectrum gradient parameter to analyze the characteristics of natural seismic sounds and artificial seismic sounds. The experiment was performed in various area to raise the reliability. The characteristics of natural seismic sounds and artificial seismic sounds were analyzed by extracting gradient indexes of artificial seismic sounds and natural seismic sounds from the data of experiment by using the proposed algorithm. As a result of the experiment and the analysis, gradient indexes of natural seismic sounds were higher than that of artificial seismic sounds because natural seismic sounds had higher attenuation at high-frequency than artificial seismic sounds did and natural seismic sounds were concentrated in low-frequency band.

Vascular dementia (VaD) is characterized by progressive memory impairment, which is associated with microglia-mediated neuroinflammation. Polyphenol-rich natural plants, which possess anti-inflammatory activities, have attracted scientific interest worldwide. This study investigated whether Rubus fruticosus leaf extract (RFLE) can attenuate VaD. Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into five groups: SO, sham-operated and treated with vehicle; OP, operated and treated with vehicle; RFLE-L, operated and treated with low dose (30 mg/kg) of RFLE; RFLE-M, operated and treated with medium dose (60 mg/kg) of RFLE; and RFLE-H, operated and treated with high dose (90 mg/kg) of RFLE. Bilateral common carotid artery and hypotension were used as a modeling procedure, and the RFLE were intraorally administered for 5 days (preoperative 2 and postoperative 3 days). The rats then underwent memory tests including the novel object recognition, Y-maze, Barnes maze, and passive avoidance tests, and neuronal viability and neuroinflammation were quantified in their hippocampi. The results showed that the OP group exhibited VaD-associated memory deficits, neuronal death, and microglial activation in hippocampi, while the RFLE-treated groups showed significant attenuation in all above parameters. Next, using BV-2 microglial cells challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), we evaluated the effects of RFLE in dynamics of proinflammatory mediators and the upstream signaling pathway. RFLE pretreatment significantly inhibited the LPS-induced release of nitric oxide, TNF-α, and IL-6 and upregulation of the MAPKs/NF-κB/iNOS pathway. Collectively, we suggest that RFLE can attenuate the histologic alterations and memory deficits accompanied by VaD, and these roles are, partly due to the attenuation of microglial activation.
A method and results of computations are presented for the 2-D seismic migration process in the frequency-wavenumber domain for the laterally and vertically inhomogeneous medium. In order to take the intrinsic attenuation effect into account in the migration process the complex-valued wave velocity is used in the wavefield extrapolation operator, improving the generalized frequency-wavenumber migration technique. The imaginary part of the complex-valued wave velocity includes the seismic quality factor Q value. In derivation of the solution of the wave equation for the medium of inhomogeneous wave velocity and anelasticity, the inhomogeneous medium is mathematically converted to an equivalent system which consists of a homogeneous medium of averaged slowness and an inhomogeneous distribution of hypothetical wave source. The strength of the hypothetical wave source depends on the deviation of squared slowness from the averaged value of the medium. Results of numerical computation using the technique show more distinct geologic images than those using the convensional generalized frequency-wavenumber migration. Especially, the obscured images due to the wave attenuation by anelasticity are restored to show sharp boundaries of structures. The method will be useful in the imaging of the reflection data obtained in the regions of possible petroleum or natural gas reservoir and of fractured zone.

In this presentation, the methods that is appropriate to remediate the farmland contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbon was considered using the case histories of the abroad. As a result of a consideration, most remediation procedures were based risk assessment and management, risk-based procedure. It is also useful to use natural attenuation mechanism to remediate petroleum-contaminated sites. However, more research efforts are demanded for developing a cost-effective and efficient technologies.

Bone health is maintained by balance between bone resorption and bone formation, and bone homeostasis requires balanced interactions between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Most of drugs and functional foods for bone health have been developed as bone resorption inhibitors, which maintain bone mass by inhibiting the function of osteoclasts. The recent studies have shown beneficial effects of marine natural products on bone health. Therefore, this review is aimed to study effects of marine-derived natural substances on osteoarthritis inhibition via attenuation of MMPs and osteoblastic differentiation via activation of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteoclacin (OC), bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2) as an important factor for bone formation, and mineralization. The present review can provide new insights in the osteoblastic differentiation of marine natural products and possibility for their application in bone health supplement.
Targeted introduction of explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing materials and optimization of explosion-resisting composite structural styles in underground engineering are the most important measures for modern engineering protection. They could also improve the survivability of underground engineering in wartime. In order to test explosion-resisting and energy-absorbing effects of high-performance equal-sized-aggregate (HPESA) concrete, the explosive loading tests were conducted on HPESA concrete composite plates by field simple explosion craters. Time-history curves of the explosion pressure at the interfaces were obtained under six conditions with different explosion ranges and different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate. Test results show that under the same explosion range, composite plate structures with different thicknesses of the HPESA concrete plate differ significantly in terms of the wave-absorbing ability. Under the three thicknesses in the tests, the wave-absorbing ability is enhanced with the growing thickness and the maximum pressure attenuation index reaches 83.4%. The energy attenuation coefficient of the HPESA concrete plate under different conditions was regressively fitted. The natural logarithm relations between the interlayer plate thickness and the energy attenuation coefficient under the two explosion ranges were attained.
BACKGROUND: Dissipation of herbicides in paddy water varies significantly, being dependent on environmental conditions such as sunlight. The photodegradation under natural sunlight may be one of natural degradation routes of herbicides dissipation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to monitor the degradation of butachlor and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl in paddy water under natural sunlight. METHODS AND RESULTS: The 12 water sample bottles of treatment were covered by quart glass plates, which allow about 90% of UV radiation (280-2000 nm) to pass through, to minimize the UV attenuation. The other 12 water sample bottles of the control were covered by glass lids and wrapped with aluminum foils to prevent the sunlight. The concentration of butachlor and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl in paddy water samples bottles was monitored under ambient conditions with and without natural sunlight. The concentration of butachlor and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl for treatment decreased from $355.3{\mu}g/L$ to $37.8{\mu}g/L$ and from $10.5{\mu}g/L$ to $3.9{\mu}g/L$, respectively, during consecutive 21 days after herbicide application under natural sunlight. CONCLUSION: The concentration of butachlor in paddy water decreased quickly under ambient conditions with natural sunlight. The degradation of butachlor in paddy water was enhanced by the natural sunlight. However, the degradation of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl was insignificant under natural sunlight.

Groundwater contamination caused by landfill leachate leads to various changes in aquifer environment according to the characteristics of incoming contaminants and aquifer geochemistry. These changes in aquifer environment are known to contribute to the natural attenuation phenomena of contaminants. The knowledge on changes in aquifer environment is necessary to determine the extent of groundwater pollution, to assess risk of the pollution, and to develop an appropriate remediation technologies. In this paper, the changes in aquifer environment caused by landfill leachate development of various redox zones-and the natural attenuation phenomena occurred in each redox zone are reviewed. From this review, an appropriate research direction and control action is presented for the groundwater pollutions caused by unsanitary landfills scattered across the nation.
