Rhododendron micranthum grown over the area of Kyoung Puck, Kang Weon Province is showy and very attractive evergreen broad-leaned shrub of shade resistance. This shrub is considered very useful for exploiting as a garden plant. Environments, growth characteristics and vegetation association in the wild habitat and in the garden planted with this shrub, were investigated to find out some appropriate means of propagation and cultivation of this shrub. The results thus obtained were stated as follows ; 1. Light intensity for the native habitat ranged in the proximity of 9%. The most abundant stand of this shrub occurred in the northen side of mountains, while still some plants were found in the eastern sides also. 2. Soil of the native habitat was acidic (pH 4.4) and infertility. 3. Average elevation of the native habitat was shown to be 230m above the sea level. 4. The plant of the native habitat showed an average of 3.9 new shoots per branch, whereas that of the garden planted (light intensity 100%) showed 1.2, 5% of an average was for sun-burn leaves were noted, while garden Plants(light intensity 100%) showed 90% of them. 5. Other tree species associated with Rhododendron micrathum in the native habitat were primarily Pinus densiflora and secondarily Sorbus alnifolia, hemerocallis aurautiaca, Rubus crataegifolius, and Salix hulteni. 6. Vegetation rate of plant habitats in the Rhododendron growing area was observed to be 0 to 80% involving 27 to 50 species of associated trees in the vegetation for the 10${\times}$10m quadrat area.
This experiment was conducted to examine the effective DNA related with muscle growth of Korean native chicken. cDNA library was constructed with mRNA subtraction from Korean native chicken to Cornish. Total mRNA was purified from pectoralis muscle of adult chicken. Five clones were compared their DNA sequence and characteristics based on GenBank. Clone NDS-1 (618nt) was low homology (10%) with other species, but it is closely related with triosephosphate isomerase which is play an important role in glycolysis. Clone NDS-6 (651nt) is corresponding to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. These two clones are encoding to enzymes in key role in glycolysis. However, other three clones (NDS-2, NDS-10, NDS-12) have low homology with other species about 5.0%. These clones were not similar with any other eukaryotics. Therefore, three clones (NDS-2, NDS-10, NDS-12) are high possibility of specific DNA for muscle growth in Korean native chicken.

This research was initiated to investigate the revegetation characteristics under seedling types of native woody plants on a disturbed slope. 4 different seedling types of woody plants (control, unit seedling plot, nature seedling plot, pot seedling plot) with the same woody plants (Rhus chinensis Mill, Albizzia julibrissin Duraz., Quercus acutissima Carr., Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) were treated with 3 replications on the experimental disturbed slope. Data such as the died number of native woody plants, growth height and visual quality were analyzed. The died number of plants were high in unit seedling plot when compared to the rest plots of seedling types. From the standpoint of died plant species, the died number were high in Rhus chinensis and Albizzia julibrissin whereas the died number were low in Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora. That's because we used 1-year old seedlings of Rhus chinensis and Albizzia julibrissin and 3-year old seedling Quercus acutissima and Pinus densiflora. This result indicated that the died reason of native woody seedling was not species but seedling age. Both growth height and visual quality were ranked first in the pot seedling plot, second in the nature seedling plot, third in the unit seedling plot, and last in the control plot, respectively. However, the difference of both growth height and visual quality in each seedling plot was not observed on the 11 months after planting. Especially, the main reason of low rooting and growth value in the unit seedling plot was due to wooven fabric outer crust of pot that obstruct seedling rooting into the soil. We concluded that pot seedling of native woody plants was effective in the viewpoint of the ecological disturbed slope revegetation.

The preference, chemical composition, intake, digestibility and chewing efficiency of collected herbage sample from sheep using esophageal fistula and fecal collection method were compared to those of offered herbage samples on the native and improved pastures at the 3rd flush stage(25 cm grass height). Experimental field was treated by one plot design and the begining of September 1987, at Chungnam National University, Daejon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Preference indices were not different among herbage species on improved pasture, while those on in native pasture were markedly different and this difference seemed to depend on diet selection. 2. Chemical compositions of collected herbage samples were different from those of offered herbage samples. Crude protein content was significantly high on native pasture, but NDF, cellulose and lignin content were significantly low on improved pasture (p < 0.01). 3. DM intake, digestibility and herbage utilization percent on improved pasture were significantly higher than those on native pasture (P < 0.01). 4. Eating rate, ruminating and chewing efficiency were influenced by the amounts of NDF intake. Therefore, eating rate, ruminating and chewing efficiency on improved pasture tended to be higher than those on native pasture (p <0.01).
Background: Sasa borealis (Hack.) Makino, a clonal dwarf bamboo, is widespread in Korean forests. Although S. borealis is native to that country, its growth habit can cause considerable harm when occupying particular areas where it dominates and influences those forested communities. However, few reports have described the extent of its inhibitory effects on the vigor of co-existing plant species. Therefore, we investigated the distribution, abundance, and diversity of other plant species in the communities where this plant occurs in the east-central forests on the Korean Peninsula. Results: S. borealis was most commonly found at an elevational range of 800 to 1,200 m, on gentle, usually lower, and near valley northern slopes. Out of the 13 forest communities based on 447 forest stands that we surveyed, S. borealis was detected in eight communities, mostly where Quercus mongolica dominates. In particular, it was more common in late-successional mixed stands of Q. mongolica, other deciduous species, and the coniferous Abies holophylla. Because of their ability to expand rapidly in the forest, this plant covered more than 50% of the surface in most of our research plots. Species diversity declined significantly (F = 78.7, p = 0.000) as the abundance of S. borealis increased in the herb stratum. The same trend was noted for the total number of species (F = 18.1, p = 0.000) and species evenness (F = 91.5, p = 0.000). Conclusions: These findings clearly demonstrate that S. borealis is a weed pest and severely hinders species diversity. Authorities should be implementing various measures for ecological control to take advantage of declining chance after the recent synchronized massive flowering of S. borealis.
This study was conducted to select native ground cover plants for sod culture in an organic apple orchard by estimating the effect of three native ground cover plants, Glechoma hederacea, Thymus magnus, and Ixeris stolonifera, on the soil coverage, time-periodic weed occurrence, fruit characteristics, and soil chemical properties. The plant height of G. hederace, T. magnus and I. stolonifera were 15.0 ㎝, 13.4 ㎝ and 7.2 ㎝, respectively. The dry weight of G. hederace, T. magnus and I. stolonifera were 463 ㎏/10a, 247 ㎏/10a, and 255 ㎏/10a, respectively. The plant height and dry weight of G. hederacea were higher than in the other species. T. magnus and I. stolonifera having relatively lower soil cover rate during their life cycle produced a lot of weeds in the orchard as compared with the control. In contrast, G. hederacea showed 100 percentage of ground cover in the first year, and maintained high percentage of ground cover in the growing season of ‘Tsugaru’ apple for another 2 years. When the soil was covered with G. hederacea in the orchard for 3 years, the amount of weed was only 114 ㎏/10a and number of weeding was also reduced about 33% compared with control as well as the other species. There were no differences in the tree growth and fruit characteristics between the native ground cover plants and the control; however, positive effects of native ground cover plants on soil chemical properties were found. In G. hederacea, available P2O4content in soils remarkably increased and was a significant difference among native species. In addition, cation (Ca, Mg and K) content in soils increased by 39% in Ca, 6% in Mg, and 11% in K at G. hederacea compared with control. These results suggest that G. hederacea could be advantageous in terms of reducing the amount of herbicide applied and the labor required for weed control, and controlling soil chemical properties; therefore, it is a good candidate for sod culture in an organic apple orchard.
In Korea, Hypodematium glanduloso-pilosum was formerly known as the only Korean native species in the genus. Recently, however, we reported one unrecorded taxon, H. squamuloso-pilosum Ching, which was found on rocks at a limestone mountain in Yeongwol, along with one new taxon, H. angustifolium in Okcheon. Traditionally, Hypodematium taxa are often distinguished from each other by vegetative characters such as pinnatifid lamina, glandular hairs, and narrower or linear lanceolate scales on stipe bases. H. glanduloso-pilosum, distributed widely throughout the country except on Jejudo Island in Korea, exhibiting variations in leaf segregation, indusia positions, hair distributions and size. The high variation in the morphological characters in the widely distributed taxon has caused problems delimitating three native species from each other. To evaluate the phylogenetic relationships among H. glanduloso-pilosum and taxa related to Hypodematium (all Korean native taxa), we carried out morphological and molecular analyses (cpDNA rbcL and psbA-trnH) of populations of the genus Hypodematium in Korea. Although H. glanduloso-pilosum exhibits high variations in some morphological characters, the species is characterized by stipes and indusia with densely multicellular hairs and rod-shaped glandular hairs or hairs and lanceolate or oblong lanceolate scales in rhizomes and stipe bases distinguished from those of other Korean native taxa (H. squamuloso-pilosum and H. angustifolium). In the analyses of cpDNA data, three Korean native taxa are placed in the same clade, i.e., in the glanduloso-pilosum group. Moreover, our analyses propose that H. squamuloso-pilosum (China and Korea), H. angustifolium (Korea), and H. fordii (China and Japan) share the same glanduloso-pilosum clade with H. glandulosopilosum (China, Korea, and Japan).

This study was conducted to detect the specific expressing genes by using RAPD-PCR and RFLP method in the Korea Native Brindled Cattle, Korean Native cow and Holstein cattle. And then, the specific marker gene was investigated by the analysis of the genes for detection significance according to the expressing pattern. We found the specific expression gene by the RAPD-PCR analysis in Korea Native Brindled Cattle. It was detected the differences of the species in the colour and external section. The Korea Native Brindled Cattle were vary low compare to the Korean Native cow and Holstein cattle by analysis result of polymorphism and distribution. And there were a found the specific marker gene by sequencing in the R9B gene fragment of Korea Native Brindled Cattle. And the sequencing result of the R9B was different between Korean Native cow and Holstein cattle. Thus, this gene can be apply as the specific marker gene in the Korea Native Brindled Cattle.
The experiment was carried out to find aromatic constituent composition of Codonopsis lanceolata species grown in the native(Mt. lrwol, Youngyang, Kyungpuk Province) and the cultivated(Andong, Kyungpuk Province) areas from 1994 to 1995. The results were as follows : Air temperature and soil temperature at the native area were lower to $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$, and to $2^{\circ}C$ than the cultivated area. Organic matter contents of plant grown at the native area higher than that of plants at the cultivated area by 4.8%. Crude protein content was higher in plant grown at native area than the plant grown in wild area but in case of crude saponin, plants grown at wild area was higher than that of native area. For inorganic element contents. K content is much higher than in the domesticated area as compared with wild area above ten over. And other elements such as Cu, Mn, Na and Mg were not remarkably different in contents. In the free amino acid compositions, argine was highest compared with other free amino acids, and Arginine content was higher in dometicated area. Recovery yield of essential oil of wild species grown at the cultivated showed 0.005%, but domesticated species was 0.004%. But both species at the native area were the same by 0.004%. Although composition of aromatic constituents in the two areas and species varied, total aromatic constituent was 21 kinds. Most aromatic constituents were aliphatic alcohols such as 1-hexanol, eis-3-hexanol, and trans-2-hexanol occupied by approximately 90% over. But three constituets as amylalcohol, furfuryl acetate, and 2-methoxy-4-vinyl phenol(MVP) were detected only in domesticated species.

The differences in seed germination rates of Korean Native Plants were observed depending on the harvest years, the seed companies, the storage periods, the drying methods and the plant morphological types. The seed germination rates were changed significantly by the harvest years and the seed companies in all 4 species tested. The seed germination rates were decreased after 1 year storage at $4^{\circ}C$ in all 8 species tested and three of them did not germinate at all. A rapid drying method at $35^{\circ}C$ with a convection oven was not suitable for Chrysanthemum spp., but there were no significant changes of germination rates in Aster spp. The germination rates were decreased more at seeding in soil than at lab. test with Dicotyledon but no significant changes with Monocotyledon. Especially, the germination rates of fine seed on 5mm soil covering treatment were significantly decreased.
