The five pieces (Bon 4054, 4074, 4077, 4096 and Bon 4097)of the Central Asia murals housed in the National Museum of Korea were conserved for approximately 2 years. The Central Asia murals conserved for this time have undergone the processes of cleaning, reinforcing pigment layers, facing to protect the pigment layers disassembling, separating wooden frames reinforcing the wall layers, attaching supports to the wall layers, removing facing and making picture frames. They were conserved with emphasis placed on reinforcing the peeled pigment layers and the weakened walls and on improving the structural problem of the exhibit frames.
This paper compares presentation methods which are characteristic among museums of natural history in Korea. The different medium for exhibitions are divided into Specimen, Model or Panel Type Displays, Video Presentations, Sound, and Tactile Exhibits, and further classified as Fixed (A Type), Observable (B Type), or Performance Art (C Type) Displays. The museums we studied were the Seodaemun Museum of Natural History, Ewha Womans University Museum of Natural History, Seoul National Science Museum, Gyeryongsan Natural History Museum, the National Science Museum, Mokpo Natural History Museum, and the JejuDo Folklore and Natural History Museum. A study of these museums' approaches to display composition, and exhibition methods according to their exhibit types and contents, revealed the following results: The museums of natural history rely more on Fixed type displays to show information, with appropriate uses of the Observable and the Performance Art type exhibitions. Better utilization of appropriate medium is desired for display contents of Astronomy Space Earth, Minerals Rocks Geology, Animals, Plants, Insects, Prehistoric Organisms Environment, and Anthropology.
One of the most important reasons why the method of IPM(Integrated pest management) was introduced to the museum is to prevent the damages by insects in the more efficient, economic and safer way. First, through monitoring the insects, the distribution, kinds, condition and inflow path of the insects should be confirmed, and then the safe and rational methods of prevention and elimination should be found in order to take more appropriate measures against them.
As part of supporting projects, the conservation science team of National Museum of Korea has treated 12 items of the porcelains entrusted by Jeonju National Museum for conservation. This paper is about the porcelains called the rice-bale-shaped battle white porcelain (No. Junju 97) and the big jar with incised fish design buncheon ware (No. Junju 5630) among the 12 items of porcelains finished with treatment, and by analyzing the information collected in the process of treating the rice-bale-shaped battle white porcelain, the manufacturing method and the use of the needle was presumed. As the big jar with incised fish design buncheon ware had been damaged extensively, it was unclear whether it could be repaired or not, but now I am going to introduce how it can be repaired more efficiently.
Securing a safe place to keep its collections in Busan, the interim capital during the Korean War, the National Museum of Korea could fulfill its mission to protect the national treasures. Right before Seoul was recaptured by the Communist forces, the museum managed to evacuate its collections to Busan in December of 1950. Until the armistice in 1953, a Korean government warehouse in Busan had to function as a temporary museum building. Protecting the national treasures in this small building, the National Museum of Korea had to maintain its role as a national museum and contribute in revitalizing cultural functions of Busan, the interim capital. The efforts led to hope for reconstructing the museum.
The airtightness of museum cases in museums was measured by using CO2 tracing gas, but it has been pointed that it has a problem with measuring the airtightness of a museum case which has a hole inside before it is used or while is being used. So studies tried to come up with alternatives which make it possible to measure the airtightness of a museum case before it is used or while it is being used if necessary by indirectly measuring the airtightness of the museum case without changing its form. Indirect measuring is done by measuring the change of Art-sorb weight and the change of temperature and humidity inside the museum case. Experiments were made for 12 days with three builtin wall case installed at the same place without turning on the lights but with Art-sorb and the data logger of temperature and humidity put into museum case. The change rate was produced with the change of temperature and humidity inside the museum case divided by that of those around museum case. As a result, the temperature change rate of museum case A(0.67) was lower than that of museum case B(0.69) or museum case C(0.79). The humidity change rate of museum case A(0.12) was lower than that of museum case B(0.19) or museum case C(0.72) showing that its airtightness was the best. Also in the direct airtightness measurement by CO2 tracing gas, the air exchange rate was compared with the humidity change rate by Art-sorb in the indirect measurement.
The Fine Art Department has sent a list of ceramic ware to the Conservation Science Laboratory of the National Museum of Korea for conservation treatment. The listed ceramic ware will be newly displayed in the ceramic ware gallery of Yongsan Museum after it is opened. Based on the list, Conservation Science Laboratory has been taking special measures to conservation the ceramic ware since 2002. This paper attempts to introduce the process of restoring the Blue-and-white porcelain Jar with phoenix Design (Jubsoo 631) and Celadon peahen-shaped water dropper (Duksoo 5202).
