  • The aim of this study is to analyse the adjustment of the proportion of segment duration in imitating voice. When imitating others' voices, how far is his/her original proportion of segment duration adjusted, and what is this adjustment like under various segments? In this study, I classified segments into consonants and vowels and consonants classified into obstruents and sonorants. The result of the analysis is as follows. ; (1)Individual variation in the proportion of obstruent is not significant, and when imitating, and its distribution is not typicalized. (2) Vowels has individual variation in the proportion of segment duration even under imitating. (3) Nasal has the most distinct individual variation even under imitating, compared with vowel and obstruent. For the further study, I should examine the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative changes in liquid (among sonorant) to find out which segment can best describe personnel characteristics of the proportion of segment duration in imitating voice.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the tobacco names in the world, to investigate the regional distribution of the classified type, and to show origin of names according to the type. The names of tobacco used in this study was 50. The type of tobacco names was classified by the presence or absence of nasal sound(morn) on the first syllable, the Number of syllable, and the structure of consonants and vowels of tobacco names. Type I (Dambago) has the nasal sound on the first syllable. The proportion of Type I(Dambago) was 28%. And the rest(Type I~Type V ; 72%) has no nasal sound. Type II(Tabaco) has three syllables, and its proportion was 20%. Type III(Tabac) has the two syllables and the structure of T+vowels+B+vowels. And its proportion was 30%. Type IV(Tutun) has the two syllables and the structure of T+vowels+T+vowels. And its proportion was 12%. Type V(Duhan) has the two syllables and the structure of D+vowels+H(V)+vowels. And its proportion was 10%. The world's most widely distributed type was Type I(Dambago). regional distribution of the world's tobacco names were clustered by the type. 72% of Type I(Dambago) was distributed in Asia. The etymology of Type I(Dambago) was only 14% Tambaku and the other is not yet known. The etymology of Type I(Dambago) seems to be derived from the Haitian Tambaku(meaning a tobacco pipe). 88% of Type II(Tabaco) and III(Tabac) were distributed in Europe. The etymology of Type II(Tabaco) and Type III(Tabac) were 84% Spanish "Tabaco". 100% of Type IV(Tutun) and V(Duhan) were distributed in Europe. The etymology of Type IV(Tutun) and Type V(Duhan) were 100% Turkish tutun and duhan, respectively. This finding suggests that the etymology of Type I(Dambago) is certainly may be Haitian "Tambaku(meaning a tobacco pipe)".

  • Using Multi-Dimentional Scaling(MDS) method, this paper analyzes the differences of acoustic properties of Korean phonemes projected as distances on a plan space. The phonemes were extracted from mono-syllables frequently occurring in daily conversation. From the distances between vowels we found that the distances between vowels /∂/ and /w/, /o/ and /u/, and vowels /$\varepsilon$/ and /e/ were relatively too short separate automatically. From the analysis of consonants. we found short distances between 1) phonemes in each phoneme group, 2) nasals and liquid /r/ of work initial, 3) nasal /n,m/ and liquid /l/ of word finals. But nasals, liquids and plosives of word initials had enough distances to be separated from those of word finals in automatic recogniation.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the acoustic parameters on frequency domain to distinguish the Korean nasals, /m, n, ng/ from each other. Since it is not easy to characterize the antiformant on frequency domain, we suggest the new parameters that are calculated by LTAS(Long term average spectrum). Maximum energy value and its frequency and minimum energy and its frequency of zero are obtained from the spectrum respectively. In addition, slope1, slope2, total energy value, centroid, skewness, and kurtosis are suggested as new parameters as well. The parameters that are revealed as to be statistically signigicant difference are roughly peak1_a, zero_f, slope_1, slope_2, highENG, zero_ENG, and centroid.

  • The perceptual judgement of nasality is still used in the assessment of velopharyngeal incompetence, but it should not be the sole criterion for speech nasality. Objective procedures may be used to assess velopharyngeal function, for example, nasometer, aerodynamics, x-ray, electromyography, nasoendoscopy, and videofluoroscopy can be utilized. The nasometer employs noninvasive measurement methods and measures with high levels of accuracy. The aim of this study was to obtain comprehensive nasalance data for Korean children, aged 7 years, and to investigate any gender differences within that age group. The results were as follow: 1. Statistically, gender has no significant effect on the nasalance of vowels /a/, /i/, /o/, /u/, /je/, /wi/) but the nasalance of the vowels /e/, /ja/) was higher in males (p<0.05). 2. There was no statistically significant effect of gender in plosives /p/, /ph/, /p'/, /t/, /th/, /t'/, /k/, /kh/, /k'/), affricatives /c/, /ch/, /c'/), and fricatives /s/, /s'/, /$\int$/). 3. The nasalance of the nasal consonants, /m/, /n/, /an/) is higher in males and only /n/, /an/ were statistically significant (p<0.05).

  • Using eighteen text materials from various goners of present-day Japanese, we collected phonologically reduced forms frequently observed in conversational Japanese, and classified them in search of unified explanation of phonological reduction phenomena. We found 7,516 cases of reduced forms which we divided into 43 categories according to the types of phonological changes they have undergone. The general tendencies ale that deletion and fusion of a phoneme or an entire syllable takes place frequently, resulting in the decrease in the number of syllable. Typical examples frequently observed throughout the materials are : $~/noda/{\rightarrow}~/nda/,{\;}-/teiru/{\rightarrow}~/teru/,{\;}~/dewa/{\rightarrow}~/zja/,{\;}~/tesimau/{\rightarrow}~/cjau/$. From morphosyntactic point of view phonological reduction often occurs at the NP and VP morpheme boundaries. The following findings are drawn from phonological observations of reduction. (1) Vowels are more easily deleted than consonants. (2) Bilabials(/m/, /b/, and /w/ are the most likely candidates for deletion. (3) In a concatenation of vowels, closed vowels are absorbed into open vowels, or two adjacent vowels come to create another vowel, in which case reconstruction of the original sequence is not always predictable. (4) Alveolars are palatalized under the influence of front vowels. (5) Regressive assimilation takes place in a syllable starting with ill, changing the entire syllable into phonological choked sound or a syllabic nasal, depending on the voicing of following phoneme.

  • The Nasometer is most commonly used to assess the presence and degree of resonance problems in clinical settings and it provides nasalance scores to identify the acoustic correlates of nasality. Nasalance scores are influenced by factors related to speakers and speech stimuli. This study aims to examine the effect of vowel context and length of stimuli and age on nasalance scores. The participants were 20 adults and 45 children ranging in age from 3 to 5 years. The stimuli consisted of 12 sentences containing no nasal consonants. The stimuli in the three vowel contexts (low, high, and mixed) consisted of 4, 8, 16, and 31-syllable long sentences. Speakers were asked to repeat each stimulus after examiner. The results indicated significant effects of vowel contexts and stimulus length on nasalance scores. The nasalance scores for the high vowel contexts were significantly higher than those for the mixed and low vowel contexts. The nasalance scores for the mixed vowel contexts were significantly higher than those for the low vowel contexts. Speakers had higher nasalance scores for 4-syllable long sentences and 31-syllable long sentences than for 16-syllable long sentences. The effect of age on nasalance scores was not significant. The results of the study suggest that the vowel context and length of speech stimuli should be carefully considered when interpreting the nasalance scores.
