  • In this paper, we proposed an inductance loaded small type open-loop travelling wave antenna model for the suitable VHF/UHF frequency bands moisture measurement systems and analyzed its operating characteristics by galerkin's solution method. This antenna model enables to change the oeprating rsonance frequency from the frequency range 150 Mhz to 1.0 Ghz without changing the antenna design dimensions by only varing the load inductance values and it showed the similar operating charcteristics and narrowband resonance characteristics at each resonance frequencies. Also this model showed the uniformly distriubte dpower radiation characteristics above the loop axis and it can effectively suppress the spurious radiations from its narrowband resonance characteristics.

  • In this study, a novel microwave absorber which consists of a structural part, a resistive sheet, and a low dielectric layer is proposed. Unlike the conventional Salisbury screen, a newly proposed absorber is capable of a range of absorbing performance, from narrowband to broadband. In the case of the narrowband absorber, the fabricated absorber with optimized design parameters has a strong resonance at 9.25 GHz and reflection loss of -44 dB with satisfying the -10 dB absorption in whole X-band (8.2 GHz~12.4 GHz). For the broadband absorber design, the reflectivity was minimized in the considered frequency ranges. The designed absorber showed two weak resonances near 6.5 GHz and 16.5 GHz and satisfied the -10 dB absorption from C-band to Ku-band (4 GHz~18 GHz). The measured reflection loss of fabricated absorber was well matched with simulation results, though the measurement was only performed on X-band. For the Salisbury screen to be capable of broadband absorption, it should be stacked multiply in a structure known as the Jaumann absorber. However, for the microwave absorber presented here, broadband as well as narrowband capabilities can be implemented without a change of the structure.

  • This paper presents in details channel and noise characteristics over narrow bands below 500kHz based on the field tests over underground low voltage(LV) power lines in residential areas in Korean grid. We show that the channel characteristics of narrowband signals over underground LV power line are decent. We first describe methodology of channel characteristic measurements including channel frequency response, noise, and line impedance, and obtain channel characteristics over the underground LV lines in the residential areas. Also based on the measurement results, we adopt the IEEE P1901.2 standard on the FCC High band, and bring up narrow band power line communication network.

  • This paper presents results of continuous wave and swept frequency response measurements over the frequency range of UNII lower and middle bands from 5.15GHz to 5.35GHz in indoor environments. From the continuous wave measurements at 5.2GHz, the excess path loss, and the statistical characteristics of the temporal and spatial fading were found. By sweeping the frequency over the band, envelope correlation as a function of frequency was found and the coherence bandwidth (CBW) was determined from the envelope correlation. Using a channel model, the CBW was used to evaluate RMS delay spread. The dependence of CBW on the antenna polarization was simulated and compared with the measurement results. The influence of room size and separation of transmitter and receiver for LOS paths on RMS delay spread was discussed.

  • Capabilities of several beamforming techniques are compared for estimating the position of a moving source. Beamforming has enabled to widen our perspective of aeroacoustics in wind tunnel experiments and has provided useful approach in array measurements. Meanwhile beamforming techniques have been developed in a way to improve estimation accuracy and to save ing effort at the same time. In order to achieve reasonable outcome from aeroacoustic measurement, it is important to identify the spectral characteristics of source and to select an appropriate beamformer. Though aeroacoustic sources normally generates broadband noises, many array signal processing have been focused on narrowband processing which makes calculation numerically efficient. However, calculation in frequency-domain requires selection of single frequency of interest which affects spatial resolution and sidelobe level as a consequence. To be able to localize broadband noise source, it is proposed to use broadband beamforming. The formulas implements the deletion of diagonal term from cross spectral matrix. In this study, trajectory of flying source emitting broadband noise was simulated and several beamformers are applied.

  • Ultra wideband (UWB) technologies have been developed to exploit a new spectrum resource in substances and to realize ultra-high-speed communication, high precision geo-location, and other applications. The energy of UWB signal is extremely spread from near DC (Direct Current) to a few GHz. This means that the interference between conventional narrowband systems and UWB systems is inevitable. However, the interference effects had not previously been studied from UWB wireless systems to conventional wireless systems sharing the frequency bands such as broadcasting system. This paper experimentally evaluates the interference from two kinds of UWB sources, namely an orthogonal frequency division multiplex UWB source and an impulse radio UWB source, to a broadcasting transmission system. The S/N ratio degradation of broadcasting system is presented. From these experimental results, we show that in all practical cases UWB system can be coexisted 35m distance in-band broadcasting network.

  • Quality of narrowband speech $(0{\sim}4kHz)$ can be enhanced by the bandwidth expansion technique, by which the high- band components are estimated. This paper proposes the bandwidth expansion method using the spline codebook based spectral folding. For the performance evaluation, the PESQ(Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) scores are measured as the objective measurement In addition, the MOS (Mean Opinion Score) and the preference tests are performed as the subjective measurement. The results show our proposed method outperforms the existing spline based one.

  • We have all heard sounds that did not sound "right" while riding in an automobile. Objectionable sounds are difficult to find and understand because the sound field is complex and dynamic in the near field of an automobile. Many different noise sources and transmission paths must be understood before an engineering change can be recommended. This paper reviews the fundamental characterization of sound and chscusses the Sound Intensity measurement technique. Sound intensity measurements locate sources and sinks of acoustic energy. Used with narrowband analysis equipment, acoustic noise sources can be identified. Sound intensity measurements are made -in-situ and do not require specmi anechoic facilities. The measurement results in a vector representation of the near field sound field and can discriminate between multiple sound sources.d sources.

  • To measure water levels from remote cites using a narrowband channel, this paper developed a difference image based JPEG communication scheme and a water level measurement scheme using the sparsely sampled images in time domain. In the slave system located in the field, the images are compressed using JPEG after changed to difference images, among which in a period of data collection those showing larger changes are sampled and transmitted. To measure the water level from the images received in the master system which may contain noises caused by various sources, the averaging scheme and Gaussian filter are used to reduce the noise effects and the Y axis profile of an edge image is used to read the water level. Considering the wild condition of the field, a simplified camera calibration scheme is also introduced. The implemented slave system was installed at a river and its performance has been tested with the data collected for a month.
