  • Commercial nanometer sized silver is widely used for its antibacterial effect; however, nanoparticles may also have ecotoxicological effects after being discharged into water. Nanometer sized silver can flow into aquatic environments, where it can exert a variety of physiologically effects in living organisms, including fish. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of nanometer sized silver on the development of zebrafish embryos, analyze the properties of commercial nanometer sized silver and define the toxicity relationship between embryogenesis and hatched flies. The commercial nanometer sized silver was analyzed in the $Ag^+$ ion form. The hatch rate decreased in the nano-silver exposed groups (10 and 20 ppt); furthermore, the hatched flies had an abnormal notochord, weak heart beat, damaged eyes and curved tail. The expression of the Sel N1 gene decreased in the nano-silver exposed groups, and the catalase activities of the exposed groups increased relative to those in the control group. Therefore, the $Ag^+$ ions in commercial nanometer sized silver could accumulate in aquatic environments and seriously damage the development of zebrafish embryos.

  • [ $TiO_2$ ] is widely used because it is non-toxic. Recently, however, nanometer size $TiO_2$ particles (P-25) have been produced and used to increase the photo catalysis efficiency. Nanometer-sized $TiO_2$ is efficient, but due to its small size ($20{\sim}30\;nm$), it can flow into ecosystems and into cells. Thus, it may affect human health. Additionally, $TiO_2$ can produce a second contaminant, OH-radical, which is a health risk for all living organisms during photo degradation reaction. Hence, when nanometer-sized $TiO_2$ flows into natural streams and attaches to living organisms, it will create health risks. We investigated the biological toxicity of this condition in zebrafish embryos. We observed abnormal morphology, hatching rate, and measured the catalase activity to determine anti-oxidation at 100 post fertilization hours. Zebrafish were somewhat affected by $TiO_2$ nanometer sized particles under UV-A (a condition similar to sunlight). Powdered $TiO_2$ is toxic to the zebrafish fly. Even without light, $TiO_2$ particles attached to embryos and flies, having an effect on both.

  • Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study the binary collisions of nanometer-sized droplets of argon in the presence of a surrounding gas. By systematically varying the droplet size, the impact parameter and the velocity of collision, the outcome of such collisions were examined and they can be classified into coalescence, separation and shattering. If one of the colliding droplets is half or less than the other in diameter, a shattering is not possible to occur. The threshold of impact parameter for a given separation was studied by adjusting the Weber number. Overall nanoscale droplets were more likely to coalesce than the macroscopic sized ones due to their high surface-to-volume ratio.

  • Nanometer-sized bismuth oxide with a diameter of about 80 nm was used as a new electron reflection material in a 29" Real Flat CPT. This bismuth oxide was well dispersed over pH8 in slurry. Spray coating was performed clearly and uniformly and was ensured that there was no clogging of shadow mask hole. Coating thickness was expressed to the brightness of chromaticity for the sprayed layer and was also well controlled during the spraying process. Doming was improved by about 10% in spite of the similar coating weight in comparison with the average 3.5 ${\mu}m$ of the conventional bismuth oxide.

  • A light guiding plate (LGP) with nanometer-sized patterns was fabricated by injection molding method which employed electrically healed mold and the transcription of injection-molded parts was investigated. A Ni stamper was fabricated using MEMS technology. The Ni stamper was then installed in a movable heated core which is a key part of the mold. Using this mold, injection-molded plastic LGP parts were manufactured at different mold temperatures and the effect of the temperature on the transcription of the parts was investigated.

  • To synthesize $Gd_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ phosphor, gadolinium-europium oxalate precursors were prepared from oxalic acid, NaOH or aqueous ammonia via coprecipitation method. The obtained precursors were heat-treated and then characterized by XRD, SEM and PL. The kinds and amounts of coprecipitant (NaOH or aqueous ammonia) were found to affect the powder morphology and properties of gadolinium-europium oxalate precursors. Two crystalline precursors and one amorphous precursor were synthesized. The nanometer-sized amorphous gadolinium-europium oxalate precursor was first prepared using the oxalate coprecipitation technique. The calcined powders obtained from the amorphous precursor were nearly spherical in shape, and a narrow size distribution was obtained. The NaOH coprecipitant was more effective in the preparation of nanometer-sized spherical powders. A thermal decomposition process was conducted for the three kinds of precursors. The photoluminescence property was also measured as a function of europium content, and concentration quenching occurred for samples with europium concentrations of over 10 mol%.

  • Nanometer-sized structures are being applied to many fields including micro/nano electronics, optoelectronics, quantum computing, biosensors, etc. Multi-scale analysis technology is required for designing the reliable nanometer-sized structures and predicting their mechanical, chemical and electronic behaviors. In this paper, some techniques for multi-scale analysis are reviewed and their applicability and limitation are discussed. Research activity of nano process analysis team in KIMM is outlined. Especially, we concentrate on OCTA of Nagoya University in Japan for the analysis of polymeric materials. Detailed structure of OCTA is described and some examples are presented.
