  • Tactile sensors and integrated circuits that detect external stimuli have been developed for use in various industries. Most tactile sensors have been developed using the MEMS(micro electro-mechanical systems) process in which metal electrodes and strain sensors are applied to a silicon substrate. However, tactile sensors made of highly brittle silicon lack flexibility and are prone to damage by external forces. Flexible tactile sensors based on polydimethylsiloxane and using a multi-walled carbon nano-tube mixture as a pressure-sensitive material are currently being developed as an alternative to overcome these limitations. In this study, a manufacturing process of pressure-sensitive materials with low initial electrical resistance is developed and applied to the fabrication of flexible tactile sensors. In addition, flexible tactile sensors are developed with pressure-sensitive materials dispensed on a substrate with flexible mechanical properties. Finally, a study is conducted on the change in electrical resistance of pressure-sensitive materials according to the modulus of elasticity of the substrate.

  • In order to design SOI CMOS image sensors, SOI MOSFET model parameters were extracted using the equation of bulk MOSFET model parameters and were optimized using SPICE level 2. Simulated I-V characteristics of the SOI NMOSFET using the extracted model parameters were compared to the experimental I-V characteristics of the fabricated SOI NMOSFET. The simulation results agreed well with experimental results. A unit pixel for SOI CMOS image sensors was designed and was simulated for the PPS, APS, and logarithmic circuit using the extracted model parameters. In these CMOS image sensors, a nano-wire MOSFET photodetector was used. The output voltage levels of the PPS and APS are well-defined as the photocurrent varied. It is confirmed that SOI CMOS image sensors are faster than bulk CMOS image sensors.

  • Various etching methods of optical fiber and formation of metal nano particles on the optical fiber have been proposed for fabrication of fiber optic localized surface plasmon resonance (FO LSPR) biosensors. Different types of etched optical fiber are possible by removing the cladding of optical fiber using HF (hydrofluoric acid) solution and BHF (buffered hydrofluoric acid) solution, which results in improved surface roughness when BHF solution is used. Localized surface plasmon can be formed and measured by formation of silver and gold nano particles on the etched optical fiber. The characteristics of the etched optical fiber and metal nano particles on the etched surface of the optical fiber play a key role in dictating the sensitivity of the LSPR sensors, so that the proposed results can be expected to be applied for related research on fiber optic based biosensors.

  • Highly integrated ISFETs require the monolithic implementation of ISFETs, CMOS electronics, and additional sensors on the same chip This paper presents novel packaging type of CMOS ISFET pH sensor using standard CMOS FET chip and extended sensing membrane which is separated from CMOS FET. This proposed packaging type will make it easy to fabricate CMOS ISFET pH sensors

  • Nano and micro structure-based biosensors are promising tool for label-free detection of biomolecular interactions with great accuracy. This review gives a brief survey on nano and micro platforms to sense a variety of analytes such as DNA, proteins and viruses. Among incredible nano and micro structure for bio-analytical applications, the scope of this paper will be limited to micro and nano resonators and nanowire field-effect transistors. Nanomechanical motion of the resonators transducers biological information to readable signals. They are commonly combined with an optical, capacitive or piezo-resistive detection systems. Binding of target molecule to the modified surface of nanowire modulates the current of the nanowire through electrical field-effect. Both detection methods have advantages of label-free, real-time and high sensitive detection. These structures can be extended to fabricate array-type sensors for multiplexed detection and high-throughput analysis. The biosensors based on these structures will be applied to lab-on-a-chip platforms and point-of-care diagnostics. Basic concepts including detection mechanisms and trends in their fields will be covered in this review.

  • In this paper, we investigated the possibility of replicating patterned media by nano-injection molding process with a metallic nano-stamper. The original nano-master was fabricated by E-beam lithography and ICP etching process. The metallic nano-stamper was fabricated using a nanoimprint lithography and nano-electroforming process. The nano-patterned substrate was replicated using a nano-injection molding process without additional etching process. In nano-injection molding process, since the solidified layer, generated during the polymer filling, deteriorates transcribability of nano patterns by preventing the polymer melt from filling the nano cavities, an injection-mold system was constructed to actively control the stamper surface temperature using MEMS heater and sensors. The replicated polymeric patterns using nano-injection molding process were as small as 50 nm in diameter, 150 nm in pitch, and 50 nm in depth. The replicated polymeric patterns can be applied to high density patterned media.

  • The effect of Cu coating on the sensing properties of nano $SnO_2:Cu$ based sensors for the $CH_4$, $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas was studied. This work was focussed on investigating the change of sensitivity of nano $SnO_2:Cu$ based sensors for $CH_4$, $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas by Cu coating. Nano sized $SnO_2$ powders were prepared by solution reduction method using stannous chloride($SnCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$), hydrazine($N_2H_2$) and NaOH and subsequent heat treatment. XRD patterns showed that nano $SnO_2$ powders with rutile structure were grown with (110), (101), (211) dominant peak. The particle size of nano $SnO_2:Cu$ powders at 8 wt% Cu was about 50 nm. $SnO_2$ particles were found to contain many pores, according to SEM analysis. The sensitivity of nano $SnO_2:Cu$ based sensors was measured for 5 ppm $CH_4$ gas and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases. The sensitivity for both $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases was improved by Cu coating on the nano $SnO_2$ surface. The response time and recovery time of the $SnO_2:Cu$ gas sensors for the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gases were 18~20 seconds, and 13~15 seconds, respectively.

  • For an arc-flash protection system, the selection of arc-flash sensor in implementation is largely dependent on the coverage area and the spatial resolution. Typically, a point sensor is used to accurately measure an arc event within a very narrow region; whereas, a loop or a line sensor can cover several electrical compartment at the same time, but with a poor resolution. In this work, a novel scheme for an arc-flash sensor was developed by making use of the transmission loss of plastic optical fibers (POFs) to cover a broad range with a high spatial resolution. By relating the amplitude ratio of the arc-signals at the ends of the POF with the arc-location, arc events could be located with a resolution of ~5 cm within a spatial range of 10 m, which has not been reported yet.

  • Dense Cr-precursor nano-hexaprisms were prepared by heating the Cr-nitrate aqueous solution containing Hexamethylenetetramine and polyvinylpyrrolidone, which were converted into porous $Cr_2O_3$ nano-hexaprisms containing nanoparticles by heat treatment of Cr-precursors at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air atmosphere. At the sensor temperature of $300^{\circ}C$, porous $Cr_2O_3$ nano-hexaprism showed the high response ($R_g/R_a$, $R_g$: resistance in gas, $R_a$: resistance in air) to 100 ppm $C_2H_5OH$ ($R_g/R_a=69.8$) with negligible cross-responses to 100 ppm CO and 5 ppm $C_6H_6$. The sensitive and selective detection of $C_2H_5OH$ in porous $Cr_2O_3$ nano-hexaprism were discussed in relation to the morphology of nanostructures.
