Conceptual Design of Soft X-ray Microscopy for Live Biological Samples

  • This study describes the conceptual design of a soft x-ray microscope system based on a laserbased source for biomedical application with high resolution (${\leq}$50nm). The laboratory scale soft x-ray microscope consists of high power laser plasma x-ray source and grazing incidence mirrors with high reflectivity. The laser plasma source used for developing this system employs Q-switched Nd-YAG pulsed laser. The laser beam is focused on a tantalum (Ta) target. The Wolter type I mirror was used as condenser optics for sample illumination and as objective mirror for focusing on a detector. The fabrication of the Wolter type I mirror was direct internal cutting using ultraprecision DTM. A hydrated biological specimen was put between the two silicon wafers, the center of which was $Si_3N_4$ windows of 100㎚ thickness. The main issues in the future development work are to make a stable, reliable and reproducible x-ray microscope system.

C-Sphere Strength-Size Scaling in a Bearing-Grade Silicon Nitride

  • A "C-sphere" specimen geometry was used to determine the failure strength distributions of a commercially-available bearing-grade silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) with ball diameters of 12.7 and 25.4 mm. Strengths for both diameters were determined using the combination of failure load, C-sphere geometry, and finite element analysis and fitted using two-parameter Weibull distributions. Effective areas of both diameters were estimated as a function of Weibull modulus and used to explore whether the strength distributions predictably scaled between each size. They did not. That statistical observation suggested that the same flaw type did not limit the strength of both ball diameters indicating a lack of material homogeneity between the two sizes. Optical fractography confirmed that. It showed there were two distinct strength-limiting flaw types common to both ball diameters, that one flaw type was always associated with lower strength specimens, and that a significantly higher fraction of the 25.4-mm-diameter C-sphere specimens failed from it. Predictable strength-size-scaling would therefore not result as a consequence of this because these flaw types were not homogenously distributed and sampled in both C-sphere geometries.

Type 3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor stimulation is a determinant of endothelial barrier function and adherens junctions integrity: role of protein-tyrosine phosphatase 1B

  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether type 3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M3R) dysfunction induced vascular hyperpermeability. Transwell system analysis showed that M3R inhibition by selective antagonist 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine methiodide (4-DAMP) and small interfering RNA both increased endothelial permeability. Using coimmunoprecipitation and Western blot assay, we found that M3R inhibition increased VE-cadherin and ${\beta}$-catenin tyrosine phosphorylation without affecting their expression. Using PTP1B siRNA, we found that PTP1B was required for maintaining VE-cadherin and ${\beta}$-catenin protein dephosphorylation. In addition, 4-DAMP suppressed PTP1B activity by reducing cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), but not protein kinase $C{\alpha}$ ($PKC{\alpha}$). These data indicate that M3R preserves the endothelial barrier function through a mechanism potentially maintaining PTP1B activity, keeping the adherens junction proteins (AJPs) dephosphorylation.

  • This paper presents effects of carburetor throttle angle on the performance characteristics of a small sparkignited, gasoline engine. The engine used in the test is a single cylinder, two-stroke, air-cooled 26cc SI engine for brush-cutter. We measured the rpm, torque, power, and fuel consumption according to the six different throttle angle conditions of the rotary-type carburetor and to the engine dynamometer loads. We had concluded that maximum power happened at 5000${\sim}$6000rpm and at the same condition was the minimum specific fuel consumption.

Surface properties of Nb oxide thin films prepared by rf sputtering

  • Niobium oxide thin films were synthesized by reactive rf magnetron sputtering. The target was metallic niobium with 2 inch in diameter and the substrate was n-type Si wafer. To control the surface properties of the films, Nb oxide thin films were obtained at various mixing ratios of argon and oxygen gases. Nb oxide thin films were analyzed with alpha step, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The result of alpha step showed that the thickness of Nb oxide thin films were decreased with increasing the oxygen gas ratios. SEM images showed that the granular morphology was formed at 0% of oxygen gas ratio and then disappeared at 20 and 75% of oxygen gas ratio. The amorphous Nb oxide was observed by XRD at all films. The oxidation state of Nb and O were studied with high resolution Ni 2p and O 1s XPS spectra. And the change in the chemical environment of Nb oxide thin films was investigated by XPS with Ar+ sputtering.

플라즈마 이온주입 후 RTP 열처리 온도와 시간에 따른 접촉저항 특성 (Characteristics of Contact resistivity on RTP annealing temperature and time after Plasma ion implant)

  • In this paper, plasma ion implant is performed with $PH_3$ gas diluted by helium gas on P-type Si wafer (100). Spike Rapid Thermal Processing(RTP) annealing performed for 30~60 sec from $800\;^{\circ}C$ to $1000\;^{\circ}C$ in $N_2+O_2$ ambient. Crystalline defect is analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscope(TEM) and Double crystal X-ray Diffraction(DXRD). Contact resistivity($\rho c$), contact resistance(Rc) and sheet resistance(Rs) are analyzed by measuring Transfer Length Method(TLM) using 4155C analysis. As annealing temperature increase, Rs decrease and ${\rho}c$ and Rc increase at temperature higher than $850\;^{\circ}C$. We achieve low Rs, ${\rho}c$ and Rc with Plasma ion implant and spike RTP.

고응답 열식 질량공기유량센서의 제작 및 열거동 특성 (Micro-Fabrication and Thermal Characteristics of a Thermal Mass Air Flow Sensor for Real-time Applications)

  • A thermal mass air flow sensor (MAFS), which consists of a micro-heater and thermo-resistive sensors on the silicon-nitride ($Si_3N_4$) thin membrane structure, is micro-fabricated by MEMS processes. Two thermo-resistive temperature sensors are located at $100{\mu}m$ upstream and downstream from the micro-heater respectively. The thermal characteristics are measured to find the best measurement indicator. The micro-heater is operated under constant power condition, and four flow indicators are investigated. The normalized temperature indicator shows good physical meaning and is easy to use in practice. It is found that the configurations and heating power of thermal-resistive elements are the dominant factors to determine the range of the flow measurement in the MAFS with higher sensitivity and accuracy.

  • The dependence of the efficiency characteristics of hydrogenated amorphous silicon single junction solar cells on the various intrinsic layer thickness has been investigate in the glass/$SnO_2$:F/p,i,n a-Si:H/Al type of amorphous silicon solar cells by cluster PECVD system. The open circuit voltage, short circuit current, fill factor and conversion efficiency have been measured under AM 1.5 condition. The result of the cell performance was improved about 8.2% due to an increase in the short circuit current.

  • MOCVD of Cu films were carried out on gold-TiN(1000$\AA$)/Ti/Si wafers from hexafluoroacetylacetonate-Cu(l) vinyltrimethylsilane, Cu(l)(hafac)(vtms), in a small cold-wall type reactor. Effects of the substrate and bubbler temperatures on the film growth rate were studied, and a film with $\rho$=1.8$\pm$0.1$\mu$$\Omega$.cm could be deposited 150nm/min at Ts=200 and Tb=$30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The initial stage of the film formation was also investigated by in-situ laser reflectivity monitoring combined with SEM observations, based on which variations in the film properties depending on the growth conditions were discussed in terms of the nucleation rate and grain size.

  • In this study, ZnO is evaporated to be coated on n-type Si wafer substrate. Refractive coefficient of thin film that is evaporating TiO$_2$ onto ZnO increases linearly as thickness is getting thinner to have high value and high angle and it satisfies theoretical equation I(x)=Io exp (-$\alpha$x) theory that represents the strength of photon energy advancing through ZnO thin film. And dielectric constant of TiO$_2$ thin film evaporated onto ZnO is high and $\varepsilon$$_2$ is smaller than $\varepsilon$$_1$. The specimen TiO$_2$ thin film evaporated onto ZnO has much higher dielectric constant when photon energy is increased.
