  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of a size of the friendship network and quality of friendship on the associations between mutual antipathy and maladjustment. The subjects were 678 fifth- and sixth-grade primary school children who were recruited from a public school in Bucheon City. The Peer Nomination Inventory was used to assess mutual antipathy, peer victimization, social withdrawal, aggression, and the friendship network. The children were given a classroom roster and asked to nominate up to three classmates who fit each description. Additionally, the children reported the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale. Each child was asked to indicate his or her one best friend and rate how accurately a sentence describe done of their best friends on the scale. The results revealed that the friendship network and friendship quality significantly moderated the relationships between mutual antipathy and social withdrawal, and peer victimization. The magnitude of the association between mutual antipathy and social withdrawal was not significant for large friendship networks and high quality friendships. Although mutual antipathy was significantly associated with peer victimization, the association was stronger at lower levels than at higher levels of the friendship network and quality. However, there was no moderating effect of the friendship network and quality on the association between mutual antipathy and aggression. A large friendship network and high quality friendship could be protective factors among those who have mutual antipathy in peer groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of age, sex, and friendship type on child's shared knowledge of a friend. The following hypotheses were raised; Child's shared knowledge of friend would increase with age, shared knowledge of girls would be higher than that of boys shared knowledge of girls would be higher than that of boys shared knowledge in a mutual friendship would be higher than in a unilateral friendship, there would be an interaction effect between age and friendship type in child's shared knowledge of friend. The subjects of this study consisted of 80 boys and girls, 8- and 11-year-olds. Shared knowledge of a friend was measured with a modified version of the 70 picture items developed by Ladd and Emerson (1984). The obtained data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA. Child's shared knowledge of a friend increased with age. Girls exhibited greater ORSK (other-referenced shared knowledge) than did boys, but there was no significant difference between girls and boys in SRSK (the selfreferenced shared knowledge). Mutual friendships exhibited greater SRSK than did unilateral friendships, but there was no significant difference between mutual friendship and unilateral friendship in ORSK. There was a significant interaction effect between age and friendship type in child's shared knowledge of friend.

  • This study investigated the prevalence of mutual antipathy in peer groups and the distribution of mutual antipathy with same- and opposite-gender peers. Moreover, psychosocial maladjustment was compared between children with mutual antipathies and children with no mutual antipathies. The subjects, 520 children in the fifth and sixth grades completed peer nominations that assessed mutual antipathy, social behavior, peer victimization. and friendship. In addition, teachers assessed children's internalizing and externalizing problems. The results indicated that 23.5% of the children had one or more mutual antipathy. Compared to children with no antipathy, those with antipathy had different psychosocial adjustment. When including children who received at least one rejection nomination, having a mutual antipathy was associated with maladjustment for girls, but not for boys.

  • This study investigated children's friendship factors such as number of friends, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics as a function of children's sociometric status. The concordance between children's and their friends'perceptions of friendship quality was examined. Subjects were fifth grade students recruited from two public schools. The peer nomination index assessed peer rejection and acceptance. Positive and negative nominations as well as social preference identified children into rejected and popular groups. Children who nominated each other on their list of friends were considered mutual friends. Children reported the quality of their friendships using the friendship quality scale. The results showed that rejected children had fewer mutual friends compared to popular children. Rejected children as well as their friends perceived their friendships less positively. Moreover, rejected children's perception showed lower correlations with their friends'perceptions than popular children's perceptions. Furthermore, rejected children were similar with friends in respect to peer rejection level. It was concluded that rejected children's problems in their peer group and dyadic friendships may mutually influence each other. The findings from this study highlight the need for future research on friendship quality and psychosocial adjustment for rejected children.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the child-mother attachment and the child-father attachment (secure attachment, insecure avoidant and insecure disorganized attachment) on children's mutual friendships and mutual antipathy relations. The subjects consisted of 116 5-6 year old kindergarteners (64 boys & 52 girls) and they were asked to respond to the Attachment Story Completion Task by Bretherton & Cassidy (1990), based on the sociometric popularity postulated by Coie & Dodge (1988). Data were analyzed by the logistic regression analysis and the one-way ANOVA method and the Scheffe test in multiple comparisons analysis. The results concluded that 1)There were differences in terms of child-mother attachment and child-father attachment when it came to a child's mutual friendship. The secure child-mother and child-father attachment groups had more mutual friendships than the insecure attachment groups. 2)There were no differences in terms of child-mother attachment and child-father attachment when it came to child's mutual antipathy. 3) 78.0% of the mutual friendships were accurately classified as existence with respect to child-mother and child-father attachment.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine Korean high school students' experience and perceptions of friendship and to inductively conceptualize friendship. The concept mapping method which is used to quantitatively analyze qualitative data was used to identify and visualize participants' experiences and perceptions of friendship. Through a brainstorming process, 93 statements were generated by boys and 100 statements were generated by girls, each set of which were sorted and categorized to generate concept maps. The final concept maps from both group equally had two dimensions: 'Practical-Conceptual' and 'Behavioral-Emotional'. The number of categories was equal to four, but there were some differences in the specifics of the statements in the category. Boys tended to conceptualize friendship as a source of happiness; a type of informal relationship through which they could share their everyday lives; and provide mutual care and engage in emotional bonding. In addition to those conceptualizations, girls also tended to conceptualize friendship as an affective alliance through which they displayed devotion to each other. Boys regarded the sympathy and bonding found in and the happiness produced by friendship as more important elements, whereas girls regarded the care and support found in and the informal nature of friendship as more important

Among boys, the factors influencing direct bullying were depression and overt aggression, and the factor influencing direct/indirect victimization was depression. Among girls, the factors influencing direct bullying were mutual antipathy relations and relational aggression, the factors influencing indirect victimization were mutual antipathy relations and peer popularity, the factor influencing indirect bullying was mutual antipathy relations, and the factor influencing indirect victimization was peer popularity. • Notwithstanding Korea and P. R.China are located in the neighborhood each other geographically, the break of diplomatic relations of them continued a long term, and the difference of ideology and social structure of two countries was acting as a barrier to understand each other in many fields. Two countries established formal diplomatic relation in 1992, and then the interchange and mutual cooperation between both countries are being performed rapidly, but the field of fisheries education and research system is continuing in the early stage yet. It can be easily expected that the interchange and mutual cooperation in the field of fisheries through the ocean contribute not only to the international friendship, but to the rational management of fisheries resources. In accordence with the necessity mentioned above, the author considered the general situation of fisheries education and research system in P. R. China. P. R. China runs two kinds of fisheries education system which are regular and irregular system. The regular education system is the principal means of cultivating fisheries scientists and technicians. And there are three grade levels in regular education : the tasks of which are undertaken by the fisheries universities, fisheries colleges and fisheries high schools. Adult education system in fisheries are of the following types : fishery cadet training courses, evening schools, correspondence courses and broadcasting or TV programs. The fisheries research in P. R. China is undertaken by the research institutes under the Bureau of Aquatic Products, and the basic research of oceanography is undertaken by the oceanographic institutes under the Chinese Academy of Science.
