  • Objective: To describe the effect of Korean medicine on gait disturbance in a patient with multiple system atrophy and cerebellar ataxia. Methods: We observed a 75-year-old female patient who had multiple system atrophy and cerebellar ataxia. The patient was treated with Korean medicine, including acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine (Yukmijihwang-tang-gamibang and Boyanghwano-tang-gamibang) for 38 days. We evaluated the patient with the Korean version of the Berg Balance Scale (K-BBS), the Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS), and the Numeric Rating Scale-11 (NRS-11). Results: After treatment, the patient’s symptoms were improved. The K-BBS score increased from 9 to 19, while the UMSARS score decreased from 16 to 12 in Part I, from 15 to 7 in part Ⅱ, and from 4 to 3 in part Ⅳ. The NRS-11 score of gait disturbance decreased from 10 to 5. Conclusions: Korean medicine may be an effective treatment for gait disturbance in multiple system atrophy with cerebellar ataxia.

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a sporadic progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by various combinations of parkinsonian, autonomic, cerebellar, or pyramidal signs and pathologically by cell loss, gliosis, and ${\alpha}$-synuclein-positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions in several brain and spinal cord structures. This is a clinical report about a 69-year-old female who had MSA treated by oriental medical treatment and evaluated by Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS). The patient was treated with herb medicine Chungsimyeonj-aeumgami(淸心蓮子飮加味), acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping. After treatment, the patient's symptoms improved meaningfully and the score decreased in UMSARS Part I, II. This suggests that oriental medical treatment could be effective to improve MSA patients' symptoms. It is necessary to have more observations and many cases of patients with MSA.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the Parent Satisfaction Scale(PSS) to measure the various components of satisfaction related to parenting. The subjects were 1210 parents(249 fathers and 961 mothers) selected nation widely from 7 cities and several rural area in Korea. the statistics used for data analysis were Fisher's Exact Test, Cramer's V, factor analysis multiple regression, Cronbach's α,and Pearson's correlation. To begin with eighty of 100-item scale were selected through the item analysis and from that 48 items were abstracted through the multiple regression analysis conducted to reduce the length of the scale. Results of factor analysis indicated that the PSS comprised of five factors: general satisfaction parent-child relationship spouse support parent's role conflict support of children. Reliabilities for the domains ranged from 79 to 91. To determine the construct validity of this instrument the Marital Satisfaction Scale and the Proverb about child rearing were administered. The two creterion measures showed significant relationships with the PSS. The final 48 items scale from the current analysis were considered to be critical steps in the development of this assessment device.

  • Microstructural design of ceramics has generally focused on information gathered at the micro- and macro-scales and related this to how specific properties could be improved. Ceramic processing serves as the key to optimizes the final microstructure. However, the advent of nano-scale microstructures and highly advanced characterization tools are forcing us to develop new knowledge of what is occurring not just at the micro-scale but also at the atomic level. Thus we are now beginning to be able to address how microstructure is influenced by events at the atomic scale using atomic scale images and data. Theoreticians have joined us in interpreting the mechanisms involved in the "microstructural" evolution at multiple scales and how this can be used to enhance specific properties of ceramics. The focus here is on delving into the various layers the "microstructure" in order understand how atomic-scale events influence the structure and properties of ceramics.

  • The aerosol content dynamics in a virtual system were investigated. The outcome was extended to monitor the mean concentration diffusion of aerosols in a predefined macro and micro scale. The data set used were wind data set from the automatic weather station; satellite data set from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer aerosol index and multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer; ground data set from Aerosol robotic network. The maximum speed of the macro scale (West Africa) was less than 4.4 m/s. This low speed enables the pollutants to acquire maximum range of about 15 km. The heterogeneous nature of aerosols layer in the West African atmosphere creates strange transport pattern caused by multiple refractivity. It is believed that the multiple refractive concepts inhibit aerosol optical depth data retrieval. It was also discovered that the build-up of the purported strange transport pattern with time has enormous potential to influence higher degrees of climatic change in the long term. Even when the African Easterly Jet drives the aerosols layer at about 10 m/s, the interacting layers of aerosols are compelled to mitigate its speed to about 4.2 m/s (macro scale level) and boost its speed to 30 m/s on the micro scale level. Mean concentration diffusion of aerosols was higher in the micro scale than the macro scale level. The minimum aerosol content dynamics for non-decaying, logarithmic decay and exponential decay particulates dispersion is given as 4, 1.4 and 0 respectively.

  • The Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM), one of the popular meshless methods, is developed and applied to stress concentration problems. Since the meshless methods require only a set of particles (or nodes) and the description of boundaries in their formulation, the adaptivity can be implemented with much more ease than finite element method. In addition, due to its intrinsic property of multiresolution, the shape function of RKPM provides us a new criterion for adaptivity. Recently, this multiple scale Reproducing Kernel Particle Method and its adaptive procedure have been formulated for large deformation problems by the authors. They are also under development for damage materials and localization problems. In this paper the multiple scale RKPM for linear elasticity is presented and the adaptive procedure is applied to stress concentration problems. Therefore, this work may be regarded as the edition of linear elasticity in the complete framework of multiple scale RKPM and the associated adaptivity.

  • This paper presents a decentralized controller design for formation flying of multiple satellites based on the overlapping decomposition technique. Each satellite is assumed to avail only the information of its own and in front of itself, which restricts the structure of a controller gain matrix to an overlapped form. The concerned large-scale system is expanded using the overlapping decomposition technique. Design condition is represented in terms of linear matrix inequalities with small-scale systems in a decentralized form, based on the expanded system. The resulting controller is contracted to the original overlapped form so as to close the original system. A numerical simulation shows the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

  • This study investigates the general applicability of the measurement scale for assessing channel-member performance for the supplier's view that was proposed by Kumar, and Achrol (1992). First, we attempted to examine whether the measurement-scale could be used without any change; the results from the initial data-analysis proposed that the scale needed a certain amount of a revision for further utilization. It seemed that the scale needed some adjustment for being applied to this study; their scale was developed with the data collected from the network of independent dealers handling multiple product items or multiple brands in the U.S. and Canada, while the data of this study were provided by a Korean car manufacturer having a dealer network selling and servicing only its own brand without ownership. Accordingly, we determined that it was necessary to develop a newly finalized performance-measurement scale revising Kumar et al.'s. During the data-analysis of the data resulted in a scale of fifteen items measuring three facets-financial performance, behavioral performance, and competence, each of which consisted of five items respectively. This empirically developed scale looked more valid for the situation of this study than the Kumar, Stern, and Achrol's which was composed of twenty-one items measuring seven facets--three items each.

  • In the domestic housing market, uncompleted lot-solid apartments and unoccupied residences are increasing in the medium-large scale area whose rents and transactions have been unstable, as going through the financial crisis and economical recession. Demands for small-scale housings are steadily increasing by practical consumer group who don't need large places, which are often not needed for the current people who are spending most of their time outside of their houses. Therefore, this study proposes the useful methods for spatial planning for small-scale houses for multiple households, including variable form, levels form, multi-level form, and smart-sizing. For efficient spatial planning for that purpose, here, small-scale housings are not limited to places for families with 1-2 members, but considered as one of broader approaches to graft various households and families. In addition, we examined the existed trends of researches about spatial utility of small-scale places, and did the research about the status of small-scale housing developments, and then proposed the direction for future small-scale housings by analyzing the advanced examples.

  • In this study, the correlation of evaluation items and safety rating for 104 of large-scale slopes along the general national road was analyzed. And, we proposed the regression model to predict the safety rating using the multiple regressions analysis. As the result, it is shown that the evaluation items of slope angle, rainfall and groundwater have a low correlation with safety rating. Also, the regression model suggested by multiple regression analysis shows high predictive value, and it would be possible to apply if the evaluation items of excavation condition and groundwater (rainfall) are not clear.
