  • Two-dimensional photonic quasicrystal (PQCs) template patterns have been fabricated on a 1.1 ${\mu}m$-thick DMI-150 photoresist using a multiple-exposure holographic method. A 442-nm HeCd laser was utilized as a light source and the holographic exposure was carried out at a fixed angle of ${\theta}$ = 6$^{\circ}$. After the first holographic exposure, the sample was rotated to a proper angle and the second exposure was performed to the same manner. This exposure process was repeated n/2 times to obtain n-fold symmetric PQC patterns and then the sample was developed. The diffraction patterns of the fabricated PQC template were observed using a 632.8-nm HeNe laser. The fabricated PQCs exhibited 8, 10 and 12-fold rotational symmetry, which was in a good agreement with the interference simulation results. In addition, the diffraction patterns with n-rotation symmetry were observed for the corresponding n-fold PQCs. We believe that the multiple-exposure holography is a good method to fabricate the mesoscale PQCs with a high rotational symmetry.

  • Wide- and flat-gain laser diodes were designed and fabricated from asymmetric multiple quantum well (AMQW) structures which consist of three compressively strained InGaAsP wells of different thicknesses. For a 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-long lasers with as-cleaved facets, -1 ㏈ and -3 ㏈ gain bandwidth were 45 nm and 80 nm, respectively. For this AMQW structure, calculated gain spectra with various line broadening functions were compared with experimental results. We confirmed the calculated gain spectra using an asymmetric line broadening function were in good agreement with the measured data.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a reliable method for locating cracks in a beam using data fusion of fractal dimension features of operating deflection shapes. The Katz's fractal dimension curve of an operating deflection shape is used as a basic feature of damage. Like most available damage features, the Katz's fractal dimension curve has a notable limitation in characterizing damage: it is unresponsive to damage near the nodes of structural deformation responses, e.g., operating deflection shapes. To address this limitation, data fusion of Katz's fractal dimension curves of various operating deflection shapes is used to create a sophisticated fractal damage feature, the 'overall Katz's fractal dimension curve'. This overall Katz's fractal dimension curve has the distinctive capability of overcoming the nodal effect of operating deflection shapes so that it maximizes responsiveness to damage and reliability of damage localization. The method is applied to the detection of damage in numerical and experimental cases of cantilever beams with single/multiple cracks, with high-resolution operating deflection shapes acquired by a scanning laser vibrometer. Results show that the overall Katz's fractal dimension curve can locate single/multiple cracks in beams with significantly improved accuracy and reliability in comparison to the existing method. Data fusion of fractal dimension features of operating deflection shapes provides a viable strategy for identifying damage in beam-type structures, with robustness against node effects.

  • The paper proposed the method of calculating the latest approach angle that can reliably recognize multiple laser images even with the change in separation distance between screen and laser launch device. This method recognizes the angle of the laser pattern angle by using the distance of the laser pattern angle, and the angle extraction of the laser detects the laser image from the acquired image using the labeling algorithm, and performs the huff conversion to extract the angle of the straight line. The distance of the reference angle and angle of the laser image extracted using Euclidean distance among similarity scales is calculated, and the furnace is recognized using the calculated distance result value. Experiments with changing the separation distance to "200 cm to 400 cm" showed 100% recognition of individual strands at all separation distances. The experiment confirmed the reliability of the proposed method.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) developed the Geochang satellite laser ranging (SLR) system for the scientific research on the space geodesy as well as for the national space missions including precise orbit determination and space surveillance. The operation system was developed based on the server-client communication structure, which controls the SLR subsystems, provides manual and automatic observation modes based on the observation algorithm, generates the range data between satellites and SLR stations, and carry out the post-processing to remove noises. In this study, we analyzed the requirements of operation system, and presented the development environments, the software structure and the observation algorithm, for the server-client communications. We also obtained laser ranging data for the ground target and the space geodetic satellite, and then analyzed the ranging precision between the Geochang SLR station and the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) network stations, in order to verify the operation system.

  • We propose a new scheme of high-resolution heterodyne interferometer that employs the two-axial mode He-Ne laser with an inter-mode beat frequency of 600~1000 MHz. An electronic RF-heterodyne circuit lowers the beat frequency down to 5 MHz, so that the phase change of the interferometer output is precisely measured with a displacement resolution of 0.1 nanometer without significant loss of dynamic bandwidth. A thermal control scheme is adopted to stabilize the cavity length with ainus to suppress frequency drifts caused by the phenomena of frequency pulling and polarization anisotropy of the two-axial made laser to a stability level of 2 parts in $10^9$. The two-axial mode HeNe laser yields a high output power of 2.0 mW, which allows us to perform multiple measurements of up to 10 machine axes simultaneously.

  • Digital 3D Real Object Duplication System (RODS) consists of 3D Scanner and Solid Freeform Fabrication System (SFFS). It is a device to make three-dimensional objects directly from the drawing or the scanning data. In this research, we developed an office type SFFS based on Three Dimensional Printing Process and an industrial SFFS using Dual Laser. An office type SFFS applied sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer (SMCSPO) algorithm for control of this system. And we measured process variables about droplet diameter measurement and powder bed formation etc. through experiments. In case of industrial type SFFS, in order to develop more elaborate and speedy system for large objects than existing SLS process, this study applies a new Selective Dual-Laser Sintering (SDLS) process and 3-axis Dynamic Focusing Scanner for scanning large area instead of the existing f lens. In this process, the temperature has a great influence on sintering of the polymer. Also the laser parameters are considered like that laser beam power, scan speed, and scan spacing. Now, this study is in progress to evaluate the effect of experimental parameters on the sintering process.

  • Direct laser metal forming technology was applied to restore the damaged mold surface. In order to estimate melting characteristics of the $20{\mu}m$ Fe-Cr-Ni powder, single layer experiments were performed at various levels of heat input. The process window of the $20{\mu}m$ Fe-Cr-Ni powder provided feasible process parameters for the smooth regular surface. The cross hatching scanning strategy on the multiple layer experiment was performed to reduce the thickness non-uniformity of edge portions compared with the one direction scanning. To estimate the coherence between the melted powder and the basematal, the tendency of hardness distribution has been observed. The hardness of the melted and the remelted zone was distributed from 400HV to 600HV. It is over 2 times compared of the hardness of the basemetal. Experimental results show that the mold restoring process using direct laser metal forming can be successfully applied in the mold repair industry.

  • We present the enhancement of narrowband modulation response of an optical source by integrating a dual-electrode distributed feedback (DFB) laser with an electro-absorption modulator (EAM). The dual-electrode DFB laser exhibits a multiple optical modes owing to a self-pulsation in GHz range. By modulating the laser and modulator sections of the integrated device simultaneously, 20-dB of narrowband modulation response enhancement at 6 GHz with 7-GHz tuning range has been observed.

  • The s-polarized laser beam is incident with an angle ~$-30^{\circ}$ to a uniformly rotating rough metal surface and the degree of second order temporal coherence $g_{s}^{(2)}(\tau)$ of the backscattered wave, which has the same polarization with the incident laser beam, is measured. The contribution of shot noise involved in the measurement of $g_{s}^{(2)}(0)$ is subtracted from the photoelectric signal to obtain the accurate value of $g_{s}^{(2)}(0)$.At each scattering angle$\theta_{s}$에서$g_{s}^{(2)}(\tau)$ is almost consistent with the function {1+exp($-\tau^2/\tau_0^2$)}, which is the same result with the case of the laser speckle formed by scattering on the rotating ground glass suface. In addition, a peak in the angular distribution of $\tau_0$ is observed with the maximum at$\theta_s=34^{\circ}$.It is found that the rough metallic scattering with multiple scattering over than 10% has the same function of the degree of second order temporal coherence with that of the ground glass surface scattering where the multiple scattering is ignorably small.
