ATM망에서 Network Performance를 고려한 Real-Time Multimedia Service에 관한 연구 (A Study on Real-Time Multimedia Service Considering Network Performance in ATM Networks)

  • ATM technology is reaching a certain level of maturity that allow for its deployment in local as well as in wide area networks. Concurrently, audiovisual applications are foreseen as one of the major users of such broadband networks. We present in this paper requriement of real-time multimedia service on B-ISDN networks and simulating the transport of MPEG-2 encoded multimedia data over ATM networks using CBR, VBR, ABR of ATM Traffic Service. We compare each delay time considering network performance and propose need for real-time multimedia service.

Space-Time Carrier Interferometry Techniques with Low-density Parity Check Code for High-speed Multimedia Communications

  • Carrier interferometry code is considered as a promising scheme that provides significant performance improvement via frequency diversity effect. Space-time coding is commonly employed to achieve a performance gain through space diversity. The combination of these techniques and forward error correction coding will lead to enhanced system capacity and performance. This paper presents a low-density parity check (LDPC) coded space-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme with carrier interferometry code for high-capacity and high-performance mobile multimedia communications. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed mobile multimedia transmission system offers a considerable performance improvement of approximately 9dB in terms of Eb/No in the Rayleigh fading channel with relatively low delay spread, in comparison with space-time OFDM. Performance gains are further increased, comparing with traditional OFDM systems.

  • Recently, the rabid development of information technology has brought enormous changes in education. Consolidation of communications and multimedia technologies are enabling the new educational paradigm such as distance learning and virtual education. Furthermore, many studies in the education engineering field report that teaching using multimedia technologies more enhances students' performance than the traditional instructor-teaching method. However, little research regarding the education using multimedia has been done in the MIS filed. None of multimedia-related studies could be found in the top-ranked MIS journals published in Korea for the last five years, and only a few studies were found even worldwide. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate which features of multimedia software are most important to enhance the teaching results of students. From the previous research, we found out the specific features of the educational multimedia software which are considered to affect the students'performance, and defined the research variables related to those educational software features. And, based on the constructivism and motivation theory of the education engineering field a theoretical research model and research hypotheses were developed. Perceived usefulness of the class and a student's perceived interests in the class were used as surrogate variables to measure teaching performance. Total 277 students participated separately in one of the two multimedia classes which have continued for three weeks. One was C programming language class and the other was multimedia CD-title development class. Each student listened for the multimedia session of the class using multimedia software and, at the end of the multimedia session, answered the survey questionnaire. The results of the study show that motivation to the class and the contents of education were statistically significant to the students'performance in the class. That implies, not only in the traditional instructor-teaching method but also in the multimedia class, that the contents of education itself and student's motivation to the class are most important to raise instructional results.

  • 멀티미디어 통신은 네트워크의 발달로 인하여 날로 그 응용분야가 발전되어 가고 있다. 일반 가정에서 사용되는 가전제품의 원격 제어에서부터 특수분야인 의료, 게임, 화상 회의와 화상채팅에 이르기까지 우리 생활의 전역에 사용되어지고 있다. 이러한 멀티미디어 통신의 필수적인 요건은 많은 양의 데이터를 고속으로 전송해야 한다는 것이다. 그러나 고속의 네트워크 환경에서 통신망의 전송률이 데이터를 처리하는 프로세서의 처리속도를 초과하는 경우 네트워크의 성능을 저하하는 병목현상이 각 노드에 발생하여 데이터 전송의 속도가 느려지고, 많은 양의 패킷 손실을 유발하는 주요 원인으로 지목되어져 왔다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 병목현상을 완화하기 위하여 클라이언트 프로세서의 처리능력을 감안, 수신능력을 예측하고 그에 따른 흐름제어방법을 제시하며 실제 구현을 통하여 성능을 평가하였다.

  • Today multimedia technologies are playing an increasingly important role in games, movies, and live performances. In this paper, we design a flexible interactive system integrated with gesture recognition, skeleton tracking, internet communication, and content edition using multi-sensors to direct and control the performance on stage. In this system, the performer can control the elements showed on stage through corresponding gestures and body movements during the performance. The system provides an easier way for users to change the content of the performance if they intent to do.

임베디드 멀티미디어 시스템을 위한 파일 시스템의 설계 및 구현 (A File System for Embedded Multimedia Systems)

  • Nowadays, we have many embedded systems which store and process multimedia data. For multimedia systems using hard disks as storage media such as DVR, existing file systems are not the right choice to store multimedia data in terms of cost. performance and reliability. In this study we designed a reliable file system with very high performance for embedded multimedia applications. The proposed file system runs with quite simple disk layout to reduce time to initialize and to recover after power failures, uses a large data block to speed up the sequential accesses, incorporates a time-based indexing scheme to improve the time-based random accesses and boosts reliability by backing up the important meta data on a small NVRAM. We implemented the file system on a Linux-based DVR and verified the performance by comparing with existing file systems.

멀티미디어 전용 명령어를 내장한 멀티코어 프로세서 구현 및 검증 (Implementation and Verification of a Multi-Core Processor including Multimedia Specific Instructions)

  • In this paper, we present a multi-core processor including multimedia specific instructions to process multimedia data efficiently in the mobile environment. Multimedia specific instructions exploit subword level parallelism (SLP), while the multi-core processor exploits data level parallelism (DLP). These combined parallelisms improve the performance of multimedia processing applications. The proposed multi-core processor including multimedia specific instructions is implemented and tested using a Xilinx ISE 10.1 tool and SoCMaster3 testbed system including Vertex 4 FPGA. Experimental results using a fire detection algorithm show that multimedia specific instructions outperform baseline instructions in the same multi-core architecture in terms of performance (1.2x better), energy efficiency (1.37x better), and area efficiency (1.23x better).

  • 멀티미디어 이동 통신 시스템은 음성 교환 및 패킷 교환의 실시간과 비실시간의 세 종류 서비스 클래스에 의해 특징지어 진다. 셀에서의 무선 채널은 이들 서로 다른 서비스 클래스의 호에 할당되어 지며 서로 다른 서비스 요구사항을 만족해야 한다. SRN은 추계적 페트리 네트의 확장형으로 모델에 적절한 reward(보상)을 부여함으로써 원하는 성능지표를 쉽게 계산할 수 있는 모델링 도구이다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 이동 통신 시스템의 채널할당과 성능분석을 위한 SRN 모델을 제시한다. 본 논문의 기여도는 성능분석을 위해 필요한 마르코프 체인의 복잡한 해석적 분석대신 종류별 서비스 클래스에 대한 채널할당을 수행할 수 있는 페트리 네트 모델링 기법을 제시하고 모델에서의 보상 개념에 의한 손쉬운 성능분석 수행 방법을 제시하는데 있다.

Optimality of Interval Caching Policies in Multimedia Streaming Systems

  • Interval caching is one of the representative caching strategies used in multimedia streaming systems. However, there has been no theoretical analysis on interval caching. In this paper, we present an optimality proof of the interval caching policy. Specifically, we propose a caching performance model for multimedia streaming systems and show the optimality of the interval caching policy based on this model.
