Haptic Media Broadcasting (촉각방송)

  • With rapid development in ultra fast communication and digital multimedia, the realistic broadcasting technology, that can stimulate five human senses beyond the conventional audio-visual service is emerging as a new generation broadcasting technology. In this paper, we introduce a haptic broadcasting system and related core system and component techniques by which we can 'touch and feel' objects in an audio-visual scene. The system is composed of haptic media acquisition and creation, contents authoring, in the haptic broadcasting, the haptic media can be 3-D geometry, dynamic properties, haptic surface properties, movement, tactile information to enable active touch and manipulation and passive movement following and tactile effects. In the proposed system, active haptic exploration and manipulation of a 3-D mesh, active haptic exploration of depth video, passive kinesthetic interaction, and passive tactile interaction can be provided as potential haptic interaction scenarios and a home shopping, a movie with tactile effects, and conducting education scenarios are produced to show the feasibility of the proposed system.

  • This paper proposes a design and realization for the semantic search system. The proposed model includes three Architecture Layers of a Semantic Search System ; (they are conceptually named as) the Knowledge Acquisition, the Knowledge Representation and the Knowledge Utilization. Each of these three Layers are designed to interactively work together, so as to maximize the users' information needs. The Knowledge Acquisition Layer includes index and storage of Semantic Metadata from various source of web contents(eg : text, image, multimedia and so on). The Knowledge Representation Layer includes the ontology schema and instance, through the process of semantic search by ontology based query expansion. Finally, the Knowledge Utilization Layer includes the users to search query intuitively, and get its results without the users'knowledge of semantic web language or ontology. So far as the design and the realization of the semantic search site is concerned, the proposedsemantic search system will offer useful implications to the researchers and practitioners so as to improve the research level to the commercial use.

Development of a Vector Graphics Kernel for Mobile Communication Terminals (모바일 통신 단말기를 위한 벡터 그래픽스 커널 개발)

  • Due to rapid development of mobile communication terminals and various requests of their users, multimedia information including image information has been the basis of mobile communication contents. In order to use vectored image information efficiently, which is more favorable than bit-mapped image information when transmission delay time and costs are considered, efficient vector graphics supporting systems are needed. Therefore, vector graphics kernel systems have been proposed and standardization attempts have been made in order to increase interoperability. In this paper, a vector graphics kernel based on OpenVG is designed and implemented. OpenVG was proposed as a standard vector graphics kernel by Khronos Group recently. The implemented vector graphics kernel, named by alexVG, is developed on a PC emulator as well as on a development board equipped with an ARM processor. In addition, performance tests are made in order to verify its functions.

A Watermarking for Text Document Images using Edge Direction Histograms (에지 방향 히스토그램을 이용한 텍스트 문서 영상의 워터마킹)

  • The watermarking is a method to achieve the copyright protection of multimedia contents. Among several media, the left documents show very peculiar properties: block/line/word patterning, clear separation between foreground and background areas. So algorithms specific to the text documents are required that meet those properties. This paper proposes a novel watermarking algorithm for the grayscale text document images. The algorithm inserts the watermark signals through the edge direction histograms. A concept of sub-image consistency is developed that the sub-images have similar shapes in terms of edge direction histograms. Using Korean, Chinese, and English document images, the concept is evaluated and proven to be valid over a wide range of document images. To insert watermark signals, the edge direction histogram is modified slightly. The experiments were performed on various document images and the algorithm was evaluated in terms of imperceptibility and robustness.

Content and Trajectory Retrievals of Moving Objects in Video Databases (비디오 데이타베이스에서 이동 객체의 내용 및 궤적 검색)

  • Recently, together with increasing use of multimedia data, many works on moving objects in video databases have been made. Moving objects change visual features and spatial positions with the lapse of time in video data. And they arc related to the other objects or events. In this paper, we propose a new modeling and various query types of moving objects for content based retrieval in video databases. The proposed modeling represents visual features, moving trajectories and semantic contents related to objects. Therefore, it allows to process various query types. And we propose various query operators for the retrieval types. To show the superiority of our modoling, we implement the retrieval systems and compare it with the existing methods in terms of the supporting query types. The proposed method supports various query types and improves the efficiency of the query processing over the existing methods.

  • Moving Picture Expert Group(MPEG) is the organization foundedin 1998 to establish the standards for compressing and expressing the multimedia contents. The organization has established the technological standards such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and MPEG-7. As the 3D video related standards, there is Multiview Profile which is included in the MPEG-2 video of 1996. However, as the MPEG-2 multiview profile is the standard for compressing the videos from two viewpoints on the object, it is not enough to meet the requirement of multiviewvideo technology. In addition, it does not have the technology on the viewpoint switching that it does not provide the services such as the user interaction. This paper proposes the structure in which the specific viewpoint can be described for video switching in addition to the current MPEG-4 system.

  • Computers have been increasingly recognized as tools for teaming, in addition to supporting industrial works. Such advantages e-Learning have as teaming at any time and place, distribution and management of standardized contents, mentoring with learners, immediate feed-backs, and dynamic learning have been applied in a variety of divisions. Despite of the researches and interests, the study on the different views between teachers who design and operate e-learning and students who receive lessons hasn't been enough. So it studied the recognition of middle school teachers and students on the e-Learning. <중략>The research result showed that there were similarity in the views between teachers and students on the concept of e-Learning. Many teachers and students have experienced the e-Learning directly or indirectly. Teachers and students showed similar opinions on the beforehand education and preferred subjects of the e-Learning. But the students required fast and immediate feedback of the teachers. Teachers and students showed similar opinions on the utilization of multimedia components to achieve the goal of education. But teachers thought that immediate feedback was important. The students thought it important to control the degree of difficulty. It suggests a way to activate the e-Learning of middle school efficiently with the research result.

Design of a Truncated Floating-Point Multiplier for Graphic Accelerator of Mobile Devices (모바일 그래픽 가속기용 부동소수점 절사 승산기 설계)

  • As the mobile communication and the semiconductor technology is improved continuously, mobile contents such as the multimedia service and the 2D/3D graphics which require high level graphics are serviced recently. Mobile chips should consume small die area and low power. In this paper, we design a truncated floating-point multiplier that is useful for the 2D/3D vector graphics in mobile devices. The truncated multiplier is based on the radix-4 Booth's encoding algorithm and a truncation algorithm is used to achieve small area and low power. The average percent error of the multiplier is as small as 0.00003% and neglectable for mobile applications. The synthesis result using 0.35um CMOS cell library shows that the number of gates for the truncated multiplier is only 33.8 percent of the conventional radix-4 Booth's multiplier.

  • One of important Issues in computer graphics field is to communicate among users in virtual world like secondlife. However, in 3D virtual world, users' needs to wish to build their own contents in 3D virtual space are rising, similarly, users produce own homepage and animation, and leave writing in notice board. In this paper, we tried to achieve this by introducing semantic annotation object concept, which is a kind of annotation method in 3D virtual world. User can retrieve an 3D object by searching corresponding annotation data. This method can build semantic 3D virtual world and enable users to search 3D objects by integrating 3D object and 2D semantic multimedia information. Also, through a comparison experiment with proposal system and general 3D virtual world. the performance of proposed system is evaluated.

A study on non-face-to-face 5AL teaching and learning method applying extended reality (XR)

  • At a time when non-face-to-face classes are being held for a long time due to Corona (COVD-19), research on non-face-to-face teaching and learning methods is needed. Existing teaching and learning methods are limited in their application to non-face-to-face classes as they present face-to-face practical and experiential teaching methods. In this study, we present a method of utilizing the extended reality (XR: eXtended Reality) technology for the 5AL (5 Activity Learning) teaching method, which is a teaching and learning method selected by the Institute for University Education Innovation. The 5AL teaching method consists of PBL Learning, Havruta Learning, Flipped Learning, Smart Activity Learning, and Gamification Learning. In this study, a method of combining the released extended reality contents with 5AL was presented. In addition, we developed content that integrates the 5 learning methods of 5AL and confirmed the learning effect through testing.
