In this work, the effect of glycidyl methacrylate grafted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GMA-MWCNTs) on the viscoelastic behaviors of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites was studied. The GMA-MWCNTs/PP was prepared using a bravender at $200^{\circ}C$ by melt mixing as a function of GMA-MWCNT content. The viscoelastic behaviors of GMA-MWCNTs/PP nanocomposites were measured by a rheometer. It was found that the GMA-MWCNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the PP matrix. The GMA-MWCNTs/PP nanocomposites showed higher storage modulus, loss modulus, and shear viscosity compared to pure PP nanocomposites and the maximum value was shown at 2.0 wt% GMA-MWCNTs loading. These results were probably attributed to the strong interfacial interaction between the GMA-MWCNT and the PP matrix.
Polypyrrole (PPy)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composites were prepared by in situ polymerization of pyrrole on the surface of MWCNTs templates to improve the ammonia gas sensing properties. PPy morphologies, formed on the surface of MWCNTs, were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The thermal stabilities of the PPy/MWCNTs composites were improved as the content of MWCNTs increased due to the higher thermal stability of the MWCNTs. PPy/MWCNTs composites showed synergistic effects in improving the ammonia gas sensing properties, attributed to the combination of efficient electron transfer between PPy/MWCNTs composites and ammonia gas, and the reproducible electrical resistance variation on PPy during the gas sensing process.
In this work, we synthesized superhydrophobic coatings by chemical surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). This was accomplished through the radical polymerization of 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate modified MWCNTs and fluoro acrylate/methyl methacrylate. The chemical compositions and microstructures of the prepared MWCNT surface were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The wettability of the MWCNTs surface was determined through contact angle assessments in different liquids. The resulting surface exhibited a water contact angle of $157.7^{\circ}$, which is clear evidence of its superhydrophobicity. The 3D MWCNT networks and the low surface energy of the -C-C- and -C-F- groups play important roles in creating the superhydrophobic surface of the MWCNTs.
In this work, we prepared activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyacrylonitrile (A-MWCNTs/C) composites by film casting and activation method. Electrochemical properties of the composites were investigated in terms of serving as MWCNTs-based electrode materials for electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). As a result, the A-MWCNTs/C composites had much higher BET specific surface area, and pore volume, and lower volume ratio of micropores than those of pristine MWCNTs/PAN ones. Furthermore, some functional groups were added on the surface of the A-MWCNTs/C composites. The specific capacitance of the A-MWCNTs/C composites was more than 4.5 times that of the pristine ones at 0.1 V discharging voltage owing to the changes of the structure and surface characteristics of the MWCNTs by activation process.
Well-aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were successfully synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition using a hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) additive onto Al/Fe thin film deposited on Si wafers. Transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the as-grown carbon products were thin MWCNTs with small outer diameters of less than 10 nm. $H_2S$ plays a key role in synthesizing thin MWCNTs with a large inside hollow core. The well-aligned thin MWCNTs showed a low turn-on voltage of about 1.1 V/${\mu}m$ at a current density of 0.1 ${\mu}A/cm^2$ and a high emission current of about 1.0 mA/$cm^2$ at a bias field of 2.3 V/${\mu}m$. We suggest a possible growth mechanism for the well-aligned thin MWCNTs with a large inside hollow core.

This study aims to obtain fundamental understandings involving the manufacturing processes of nano-composites with chemically surface-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs), and explore the role of functionalized MWCNTs in the epoxy/MWCNT composites. For this purpose, MWCNTs were purified by the thermo-chemical oxidation process, and incorporated into an epoxy matrix by in situ polymerization process, the surface of MWCNTs were functionalized with carboxyl functions which were demonstrated by an infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of epoxy/MWCNT nano-composites were measured to investigate the role of a chemically functionalized carbon nanotubes. To improve the dispersion quality of MWCNTs in the epoxy matrix, methanol and acetone were exploited as dispersion media with sonification. The epoxy/MWCNT nano-composites with 1 or 2 wt.% addition of functionalized carbon nanotubes show an improved tensile strength and wear resistance in comparison with pure epoxy, which shows the mechanical load transfer improves through chemical bonds between epoxy and functionalized MWCNTs. The tensile strength with 7 wt.% functionalized MWCNTs increases by 28% and the wear resistance is dramatically improved by 100 times.
We have synthesized thin multi-walled carbon nanotubes (t-MWCNTs) using a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method with FeMoMgO catalyst. The number of tube walls were 2 ${\sim}$ 6 with the corresponding diameters of 3 ${\sim}$ 6 nm. We obtained high production yield of over 3000 wt% compared to the weight of the supplied catalyst. These t-MWCNTs revealed the intermediate structural characteristics between single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs). We have also characterized the field emission properties such as turn-on field and emission current, and current degradation from these t-MWCNTs together with SWCNTs and MWCNTs.

In recent years, nano-reinforcing materials are widely utilized in cement composites due to their unique multifunctional properties. This study incorporated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the cementitious composites at ratios of 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%, and investigated their influence on the flowability, mechanical strength, and hydration heat properties. The addition of MWCNTs enhanced the compressive and split tensile strengths approximately by 18-51%. In the semi-adiabatic temperature rise test, the internal hydration heat of the composites reduced by 5%, 9%, and 12% with the increase of MWCNTs in 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5%. This study further performed hydration heat analysis and estimated the adiabatic temperature rise, thermal stress, and thermal crack index. The internal hydration heat of the concrete decreased by 5%, 10%, and 13% with the increase of MWCNTs. The thermal stress of the concrete decreased with increase in the addition of MWCNTs, and the obtained temperature crack index was effective in controlling the thermal cracks.
Objectives: Carbon nanotubes are an important new class of technological materials that have numerous novel and useful properties. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which is a nanomaterial, is now in mass production because of its excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Although MWCNTs appear to have great industrial and medical potential, there is little information regarding their toxicological effects on researchers and workers who could be exposed to them by inhalation during the handling of MWCNTs. Methods: The generation of an untangled MWCNT aerosol with a consistent concentration without using surfactants that was designed to be tested in in vivo inhalation toxicity testing was attempted. To do this, MWCNTs were dispersed in deionized water without the addition of any surfactant. To facilitate the dispersion of MWCNTs in deionized water, the water was heated to $40^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, and $80^{\circ}C$ depending on the sample with ultrasonic sonication. Then the dispersed MWCNTs were atomized to generate the MWCNT aerosol. After aerosolization of the MWCNTs, the shapes of the NTs were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Results: The aerosolized MWCNTs exhibited an untangled shape and the MWCNT generation rate was about 50 $mg/m^3$. Conclusion: Our method provided sufficient concentration and dispersion of MWNCTs to be used for inhalation toxicity testing.
Carbon nanotubes are unique tubular structures of nanometer diameter and large length/diameter ratio. The nanotubes may consist of one up to tens and hundreds of concentric shells of carbons with adjacent shells separation of ~0.34 nm. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were synthesized by arc-discharge technique. MWCNTs were formed at the cathode deposit along with other carbonaceous materials like amorphous carbon, graphite etc. However, to get the best advantage of carbon nanotubes in various advanced applications, these undesired carbonaceous materials to be removed which is a challenging task. In the present study, various techniques were tried out for purifying MWCNTs such as physical filtration, chemical treatment and thermal annealing. SEM, FTIR, TGA and BET techniques were used to characterize the CNTs at various stages. Results shows that suitable chemical treatment followed by thermal annealing under controlled flow of oxygen gives the better route for purification of carbon nanotubes.
