  • This paper presents a 3D video content generation technique and system that uses the multi-view images and the depth map. The proposed uses 3-view video and depth inputs from the 3-view video camera and depth camera for the 3D video content production. Each camera is calibrated using Tsai's calibration method, and its parameters are used to rectify multi-view images for the multi-view stereo matching. The depth and disparity maps for the center-view are obtained from both the depth camera and the multi-view stereo matching technique. These two maps are fused to obtain more reliable depth map. Obtained depth map is not only used to insert a virtual object to the scene based on the depth key, but is also used to synthesize virtual viewpoint images. Some preliminary test results are given to show the functionality of the proposed technique.

  • In this paper, we propose a super-resolution (SR) image reconstruction algorithm using multi-view images. We acquire 25 images from multi-view cameras, which consist of a $5{\times}5$ array of cameras, and then reconstruct an SR image of the center image using a low resolution (LR) input image and the other 24 LR reference images. First, we estimate disparity maps from the input image to the 24 reference images, respectively. Then, we interpolate a SR image by employing the LR image and matching points in the reference images. Finally, we refine the SR image using an iterative regularization scheme. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides higher quality SR images than conventional algorithms.

  • This paper designs and implements a multi-view 3D video player system which is operated faster than existing video player systems. The structure for obtaining the near optimum speed in a multi-processor environment by parallelizing the component modules is proposed to process large volumes of multi-view image data at high speed. In order to use the concurrency of bottleneck, we designed image decoding, synthesis and rendering modules in a pipeline structure. For load balancing, the decoder module is divided into the unit of viewpoint, and the image synthesis module is geometrically divided based on synthesized images. As a result of this experiment, multi-view images were correctly synthesized and the 3D sense could be felt when watching the images on the multi-view autostereoscopic display. The proposed application processing structure could be used to process large volumes of multi-view image data at high speed, using the multi-processors to their maximum capacity.

  • The technique to produce full-parallax 3D multi-view still pictures is described. The matrix of source views (from 6x6 to 15x15 views) is built from computer-generated images or from the natural images taken by a photo-camera. The matrix is processed in specially designed software and the resulting multi-view picture is generated. To display the large size (up to 0.4 m x 0.6 m) multi-view picture, the crossed lenticular screens of two types were used.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme to generate multi-view images using a depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) technique. In order to improve the quality of multi-view images at newly exposed areas during mesh-based rendering, we preprocess the depth map using a Gaussian smoothing filter. Previous algorithms apply a smoothing filter to the whole depth map even if the depth map is collapsed. After extracting objects from the depth map, we apply the smoothing filter to their boundaries. Finally, we cannot only maintain the depth quality, but also generate high quality multi-view images. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms previous works and supports an efficient depth keying technique.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) video technologies are becoming increasingly popular, as it can provide users with high quality and immersive experiences. However, color inconsistency between the camera views is an urgent problem to be solved in multi-view imaging. In this paper, a perception-based color correction method for multi-view images is proposed. In the proposed method, human visual sensitivity (VS) and visual attention (VA) models are incorporated into the correction process. Firstly, the VS property is used to reduce the computational complexity by removing these visual insensitive regions. Secondly, the VA property is used to improve the perceptual quality of local VA regions by performing VA-dependent color correction. Experimental results show that compared with other color correction methods, the proposed method can greatly promote the perceptual quality of local VA regions greatly and reduce the computational complexity, and obtain higher coding performance.

  • Multi-view super-resolution (MVSR) refers to the process of reconstructing a high-resolution (HR) image from a set of low-resolution (LR) images captured from different viewpoints typically by different cameras. These multi-view images are usually obtained by a camera array. In our previous work [1], we super-resolved multi-view LR images via image fusion (IF) and blind deblurring (BD). In this paper, we present a new MVSR method that jointly realizes IF and BD based on an integrated energy function optimization. First, we reformulate the MVSR problem into a multi-channel blind deblurring (MCBD) problem which is easier to be solved than the former. Then the depth map of the desired HR image is calculated. Finally, we solve the MCBD problem, in which the optimization problems with respect to the desired HR image and with respect to the unknown blur are efficiently addressed by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Experiments on the Multi-view Image Database of the University of Tsukuba and images captured by our own camera array system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Multi-view video system provides both realistic 3D feelings and free-view navigation. But it is hard to transmit too huge data, so we send only two or three view images and generate intermediate view image using depth information. In this paper, we propose high quality multi-view image generation method from stereoscopic images. Since the stereo matching method does not provide accurate disparity values for all the pixels, especially at the occlusion area, we propose an occlusion handling method using the background pixels at first. We also apply a joint bilateral filtering to enhance the disparity map at the object boundary since it can affect the quality of synthesized images significantly. Finally, we can generate virtual view images at intermediate view positions using confidence map to reduce bad pixel and hole's error. Experimental results show the proposed method performs better than the conventional method.

  • In this paper, we propose an application of OpenGL functions for novel view synthesis from multi-view images and depth maps. While image based rendering has been meant to generate synthetic images by processing the camera view with a graphic engine, little has been known about how to apply the given images and depth information to the graphic engine and render the scene. This paper presents an efficient way of constructing a 3D space with camera parameters, reconstructing the 3D scene with color and depth images, and synthesizing virtual views in real-time as well as their depth images.

  • In this paper, a 3D coordinates acquisition method for a mechanical assembly is developed by using multiview X-ray images. The multi-view X-ray images of an object are obtained by a rotary table. From the rotation transformation, it is possible to obtain the 3D coordinates of corresponding edge points on multi-view X-ray images by triangulation. The edge detection algorithm in this paper is based on the attenuation characteristic of the X-ray. The 3D coordinates of the object points are represented on a graphic display, which is used for the inspection of a mechanical assembly.
