This paper provides an introduction to life-span simulation and numerical approach to support the performance design processes of reinforced concrete structures. An integrated computational system is proposed for life-span simulation of reinforced concrete. Conservation of moisture, carbon dioxide, oxygen, chloride, calcium and momentum is solved with hydration, carbonation, corrosion, ion dissolution. damage evolution and their thermodynamic/mechanical equilibrium. Coupled analysis of mass transport and damage mechanics associated with steel corrosion is presented for structural performance assessment of reinforced concrete. Multi-scale modeling of micro-pore formation and transport phenomena of moisture and ions are mutually linked for predicting the corrosion of reinforcement and volumetric changes. The interaction of crack propagation with corroded gel migration can also be simulated. Two finite element codes. multi-chemo physical simulation code (DuCOM) and nonlinear dynamic code of structural reinforced concrete (COM3) were combined together to form the integrated simulation system. This computational system was verified by the laboratory scale and large scale experiments of damaged reinforced concrete members under static loads, and has been applied to safety and serviceability assessment of existing structures. Based on the damage details predicted by the nonlinear finite element analytical system, the life-span-cost of RC structures including the original construction costs and the repairing costs for possible damage during the service life can be evaluated for design purpose.
The effect of a partially earth anchored cable system on the structural safety of a long span cable-stayed bridge under seismic and wind loads are examined during construction process. By assuming the FCM (free cantilever method) construction stages with structural vulnerability, a multi-mode spectral analysis and a multi-mode buffeting analysis are performed for specific seismic load and wind load, respectively. Results show that the wind load dominates the structural safety of a cable-stayed bridge during construction. And, the application of a partially earth anchored cable system can enhance structural safety under wind load since the maximum pylon moment in the model with partially earth anchored cable system is reduced by 49% under wind load. In contrast, the maximum pylon moment occurred by seismic load is only decreased by 8%.
In the aerospace field, the study on a morphing-wing is in progress to improve flight performance and perform multi flight mission. There are many concepts of morphing-wing such as camber-change, wing-twist, variable-span, and so on. In this study, the aerodynamic characteristics and flight control of an air vehicle with a variable-span morphing wing (VSMW) have been investigated. VSMW with symmetric span control(SSC) can increase cruising range of aircraft by reducing drag in various flight condition. VSMW with anti-symmetric span control(ASSC) can be used in the roll control of an aircraft. The flight control about pure rolling dynamic system and full dynamic system have been performed about the cruise missile.

The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement.

In dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation applied into optical transmission links with multi fiber spans for minimizing the impact of nonlinearity and group velocity (GVD), implementation possibility of DM using only one fiber span for pre- or postcompensation was assessed as a function of duty cycle of RZ pulse and residual dispersion per span (RDPS). It is confirmed that DM with optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) controlled by only one fiber span could be sufficiently applied into optical transmission links, though optimal NRD is more increased than that in transmission links with the general DM scheme of pre- and postcompensation. Thus, it is expected that optical transmission system is simply designed and implemented by applying the proposed DM scheme into real optical transmission links. Also, it is confirmed that the advantageous duty cycle of RZ is 0.5 and RDPS is setting to be small value for the effective transmitting wide signal wavelength range in optical links with optimal NRD controlled by only one fiber span.
Several reactor system components, such as heat exchange tubes, fuel fins, controlrods, and various instruments are beam-like components. This study presents a simple solution method for calculating the natural frequencies and modes of beams supported by linear and torsional springs and attached concentrated mass and rotational inertia at some intermediate points. For a general multi-span beam, theoretical method is proposed to analyze the exact solution about vibrational characteristics with respect to the nondimensional parameters. And the results obtained using the numerical models are presented and discussed.
This paper proposes a new speed and tension control algorithm for multi-span continuous strip processing line. In this algorithm the speed reference of each roll is adjusted to make the output force follow the load balance reference using an outer loop controller in cascade. Using the information of the output force of the adjacent roll, it is shown that the strip tension between two rolls can be controlled as the desired value without tension sensor. An experimental set-up which consists of 4 driven and 3 measuring rolls is designed and built for the multi-span speed and tension control. The experimental result reveals conspicuous improvement of tension control performance by the proposed algorithm comparing to the conventional tension feedback controller.
Partially earth anchored (PEA) can improve the structural safety and economic feasibility of multiple span cable stayed bridge (CSB). The PEA-CSB can restrain axial compressive load acting on a tower and reduce the global buckling length of a stiffened girder. For these reasons, structural members subject to axial forces can be effectively utilized and material quantity required for a steel deck can be reduced to save construction cost. In this study, the PEA system was verified for its application on a multiple span CSB. The CSB is a four-tower multi-span bridge which has a main span length of 500 m. As high tensile stress was generated at the top of the bridge decks at the mid-span between two main columns, a hybrid deck system for enhancing the bridge deck sections was proposed. While the composite sections made of concrete and steel were used near to the main columns, steel sections were used at the mid-span between two main columns.
There are a large number of papers in the literature dealing with the free vibration analysis of single/multi-span uniform beam with multiple spring-mass systems, but that of coupled multi-span beams carrying spring-mass attachments is rare. In this note, free vibration analysis of a weakly coupled beam system with spring-mass attachments is conducted. The mode localization and frequency loci veering phenomena of the coupled beam system are investigated. Studies show that for weakly coupled beam system with spring-mass attachments, the mode localization and frequency loci veering will occur once there is a disorder in the system.
