  • In this paper, a radio resource allocation scheme for a multi-hop relay transmission in cognitive radio (CR) system is proposed to support the employment of relay nodes in IEEE 802.22 standard for wireless regional area network (WRAN). An optimization problem is formulated to maximize the number of serving secondary users (SUs) under system constraints such as time-divided frame structure for multiplexing and a single resource-unit to every relay-hop. However, due to mathematical complexity, the optimization problem is solved with a sub-optimal manner instead, which takes three steps in the order of user selection, relay/path selection, and frequency selection. In the numerical analysis, this proposed solution is evaluated in terms of service rate denoting as the ratio of the number of serving SUs to the number of service-requesting SUs. Simulation results show the condition of adopting multi-hop relay and the optimum number of relaying hops by comparing with the performance of 1-hop system.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an application area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) which usually needs high data communication rate to transfer a large amount of monitoring data. Traditional sink node can only process data from one communication channel at the same time because of the single radio chip structure. The sink node constitutes a bottleneck for constructing a high data rate SHM application giving rise to a long data transfer time. Multi-channel communication has been proved to be an efficient method to improve the data throughput by enabling parallel transmissions among different frequency channels. This paper proposes an 8-radio integrated sink node design method based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and the time synchronization mechanism for the multi-channel network based on the proposed sink node. Three experiments have been performed to evaluate the data transfer ability of the developed multi-radio sink node and the performance of the time synchronization mechanism. A high data throughput of 1020Kbps of the developed sink node has been proved by experiments using IEEE.805.15.4.

  • Recently, many countries have been developing new protocols to improve the performance of tactical ad hoc networks for implementing NCW (Network Centric Warfare). Combat net radio (CNR) networks are the most important communication infra for the ground forces such as infantry of Army. U.S. Army had developed MIL-STD-188-220D that is the Interoperability Standard for DMTDs (Digital Messages Transfer Device Subsystems) for voice and data communication in CNR. MIL-STD-188-220D is a candidate for MAC protocol of TMMR which is next radio and has a few constraints to used in TMMR. NAD (Network Access Delay) defined in MIL-STD-188-220D needs time synchronization to avoid collision. However, it is difficult for time synchronization to fit in multi-hop environment. We suggest the enhanced DAP (Deterministic Adaptable Priority)-NAD to prevent conflicts and decrease delays in multi-hop CNR. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the performance in multi-hop CNR networks.

  • In this paper, a multi-hop relaying transmission scheme is analyzed regarding its feasibility and potentiality in the IEEE 802.22-based cognitive radio (CR) environment. Shortly, basic design issues are addressed such as relay station (RS) deployment and a frame structure of physical channel to escape inter-hop interference. This paper mainly develops a radio resource management scheme based on spectrum sensing results aggregated from CR secondary nodes and improves the opportunistic spectrum sharing efficiency. In particular, a decision rule about a channel availability is made using a distributed sensing method. Subsequently, spectrum allocation and routing path decision procedures are proposed to establish a link from source to destination with a hop-by-hop manner. Simulation results show that the proposed multi-hop relaying scheme is substantially profitable in CR environments if the number of hops and RS deployment are designed in such a way that the spectrum sharing gain is larger than spectrum division loss which is inherently induced in multi-hop relaying systems.

  • Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) provide high-speed backbone networks without any wired cable. Many researchers have tried to increase network throughput by using multi-channel and multi-radio interfaces. A multi-radio multi-channel WMN requires channel assignment algorithm to decide the number of channels needed for each link. Since the channel assignment affects routing and interference directly, it is a critical component for enhancing network performance. However, the optimal channel assignment is known as a NP complete problem. For high performance, most of previous works assign channels in a centralized manner but they are limited in being applied for dynamic network environments. In this paper, we propose a simple flow estimation algorithm and a hybrid channel assignment algorithm. Our flow estimation algorithm obtains aggregated flow rate information between routers by packet sampling, thereby achieving high scalability. Our hybrid channel assignment algorithm initially assigns channels in a centralized manner first, and runs in a distributed manner to adjust channel assignment when notable traffic changes are detected. This approach provides high scalability and high performance compared with existing algorithms, and they are confirmed through extensive performance evaluations.

  • We propose self-encoded spread spectrum with two different iterative detection methods in multi-channel communication. The centralized iterative detection outperforms the iterative detection distributed over multiple channels. The results show that self-encoded spread spectrum with the centralized iterative detection is an excellent candidate for cognitive radio network.

  • For the safety messages in IEEE 802.11p vehicles network environment(WAVE), strict periodic beacon broadcasting requires status advertisement to assist the driver for safety. WAVE standards apply multiple radios and multiple channels to provide open public road safety services and improve the comfort and efficiency of driving. Although WAVE standards have been proposed multi-channel multi-radio, the standards neither consider the WAVE multi-radio environment nor its effect on the beacon broadcasting. Most of beacon broadcasting is designed to be delivered on only one physical device and one control channel by the WAVE standard. also conflict-free channel assignment of the fewest channels to a given set of radio nodes without causing collision is NP-hard, even with the knowledge of the network topology and all nodes have the same transmission radio. Based on the latest standard IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 1609.4, this paper proposes an interference aware-based channel assignment algorithm with Nash bargaining solution that minimizes interference and increases throughput with wireless mesh network, which is deigned for multi-radio multi-cahnnel structure of WAVE. The proposed algorithm is validated against numerical simulation results and results show that our proposed algorithm is improvements on 8 channels with 3 radios compared to Tabu and random channel allocation algorithm.

  • The need for radio spectrum is recently considered as a huge hurdle towards the rapid development of wireless networks. Large parts of the spectrum are allocated to licensed radio services in proprietary way. However, enormous success of the wireless services and technologies in the unlicensed bands has brought new ideas and innovations. In recent years cognitive radio has gained much attention for solving the spectrum scarcity problem. It changes the way spectrum is regulated so that more efficient spectrum utilization is possible. Multi-hop relay technology on the other hand has intensively been studied in the area of ad hoc and peer-to-peer networks. But in cellular network, only recently the integration of multi-hop capability is considered to enhance the performance significantly. Multi-hop relaying can extend the coverage of the cell to provide high data rate service to a greater distance and in the shadowed regions. Very few papers still exist that combine these methods to maximize the spectrum utilization. Thus we propose a network architecture combining these two technologies in a way to maximize the system throughput. We present the throughput capacity equations for the proposed system model considering various system parameters like utilization factor by the primary users and primary users' transmission radius and through extensive numerical simulations we analyze the significance of work.

  • Multi-frequency polarization observations of Abell 695 are reported here. The brightest radio source 0838+325, which was previously classified as a wide angled head-tail radio source, is, in the present observations, resolved into two separable sources, a head-tail source 0838+325 AB and a diffuse one 0838+325C. The radio-tail shows high degree of linear polarization(${\sim}50$-25%) along the radio-tail, suggesting that the interaction with its surrounding intracluster medium (ICM) is not highly turbulent. With the present data, thermal particle densities at the locations of these sources are estimated to be n > $10^{-5}\;cm^{-3}$.

  • In this paper, a millimeter-wave multi-beam antenna is studied by rotating the antipodal linear tapered slot antenna(ALTSA) with respect to a center is successfully designed. In order to lowering the SLL and enhancing the isolation between the ALTSA elements, a row of metallic via is inserted between the ALTSAs. A 9 beams antenna is designed and experimented at Ka band. The measured and simulated results agree well with each other. The antenna can provide horizontal wide angle coverage up to ${\pm}62^{\circ}$. The gain of each beam can achieve about 12.5 dB. The mutual coupling between ports is all below 20 dB.
