  • Both the bubble rising in a fully filled container and the droplet splash are simulated by a solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method (CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present code simulate complex free surface flows such as multi phase flows due to large density difference efficiently and accurately.

  • It is necessary to develope a high frequency diode laser sensor system based on the absorption spectroscopy for the measurement of temperature of the spray flame. DFB diode laser operating near $2.0{\mu}m$ was used to scan over selected $H_2O$ transitions near $1.9{\mu}m\;and\;2.2{\mu}m$, respectively. The measurement sensitivity at wide range of sweep frequency was evaluated using multi-pass cell containing $CO_2$ gas. This diode laser absorption sensor with high temporal resolution up to 10kHz was applied to measure the gas temperature in the spray flame region of liquid-gas 2-phase counter flow flame. The successful demonstration of time series temperature measurement in the spray flame gives us motivation of trying to establish non-intrusive temperature measurement method in the practical spray flame.

  • Resolved simulations are presented fur gravity current flows aiming at studying their spreading rate. The simulations are performed for two extreme configurations such as planar and cylindrical and for 3 different Grashof numbers: $10^5,\;1{\times}10^6\;and\;10^7$. Varying the size of the heavy fluid release, the study is performed for several phases of spreading, namely acceleration, slumping and inertial phases. For the simulations, efficient spectral multi-domain code is used. From the simulations results it is concluded that 2-D results predicts well the mean front velocity during the slumping phase, but fails to predict it during the inertial phase of spreading. It is also observed that the vortex dynamics of the flow is not reproduced well by the 2-D simulation.

  • This paper describes thermal flow characteristic in various pipelines: straight pipeline and curved pipeline. In the Arctic and ocean area, pipelines are exposed to a extremely low temperature ($0{\sim}-40^{\circ}C$). In this situation, three-dimensional flow analysis should be analyzed to investigate thermal effects such as pressure drop, temperature change, velocity deficit and distribution change of liquid droplet of internal fluid. Also, due to freezing of water droplet, impingement erosion is expected in the curved pipeline. The stability of the pipelines can be influenced by impingement erosion. In this paper, multi-phase and multi-species analysis was introduced to analyze the flow characteristics and impingement erosion of Arctic and ocean pipelines.

  • Measurements of multiphase flows containing bubbles have been limited because most existing methods target one phase flows. Especially, multiphase flows with a high void ratio have been rarely successful in measurements due to the sudden change of density and thick interfaces between air and water. This study introduces two methods that are capable of measuring flow fields regardless of bubble void ratio, named bubble image velocimetry and bundle fiber optic flow meter. The calculation of the depth of field is suggested to reduce and estimate errors by perspective image velocimetry. The bundle fiber optic flow meter is designed to increase a measurement rate using many optical fibers with a thin diameter. The two methods measured bubble plumes to test reliability and the velocity measurements show good agreement. In addition a hydraulic jump, one of the multiple flows in rivers was measured to test applicability of the methods.

  • The flow pattern of air layers and skin-friction drag reduction by air injection are investigated to find the suitable multiphase flow model using unstructured finite-volume CFD solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In the present computations, two different multiphase flow modeling approaches, such as the Volume of Fluid (VOF) and the Eulerian Multi-Phase (EMP), are adopted to investigate their performances in resolving the two-phase flow pattern and in estimating the frictional drag reduction. First of all, the formation pattern of air layers generated by air injection through a circular opening on the bottom of a flat plate are investigated. These results are then compared with those of MMkiharju's experimental results. Subsequently, the quantitative ratios of skin-friction drag reduction including the behavior of air layers, within turbulent boundary layers in large scale and at high Reynolds number conditions, are investigated under the same conditions as the model test that has been conducted in the US Navy's William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel (LCC). From these results, it is found that both VOF and EMP models have similar capability and accuracy in capturing the topology of ventilated air cavities so called'air pockets and branches'. However, EMP model is more favorable in predicting quantitatively the percentage of frictional drag reduction by air injection.

  • To improve the heat transfer efficiency of the reactor fuel assembly, it is necessary to accurately calculate the two-phase flow boiling characteristics and the critical heat flux (CHF) in the fuel assembly. In this paper, a Eulerian two-fluid model combined with the extended wall boiling model was used to numerically simulate the 5 × 5 fuel rod bundle with spacer grids (four sets of mixing vane grids and four sets of simple support grids without mixing vanes). We calculated and analyzed 11 experimental conditions under different pressure, inlet temperature, and mass flux. After comparing the CHF and the location of departure from the nucleate boiling obtained by the numerical simulation with the experimental results, we confirmed the reliability of computational fluid dynamic analysis for the prediction of the CHF of the rod bundle and the boiling characteristics of the two-phase flow. Subsequently, we analyzed the influence of the spacer grid and mixing vanes on the void fraction, liquid temperature, and secondary flow distribution. The research in this article provides theoretical support for the design of fuel assemblies.

  • Effects of fuel injection timing on the lean misfire limit of a sequential MPI SI engine has been investigated. To investigate the interaction of injection timing and intake flow characteristics, so called axial stratification phenomena, 4 kinds of different intake swirl port of the same combustion chamber geometry have been teated in a single cylinder engine test bench. And 2 kinds of fuel, gasoline and compressed natural gas(CNG), were used to see the effect of liquid fuel vaporization. Result shows that combination of port swirl and injection timing governs the lean misfire limit and lean misfire limit envelopes remain almost the same for a given ratio regardless of engine speed. It is also found that two phase flow has some effects on lean misfire limit.

  • Pulsed ultrasonic Doppler system is a useful diagnostic instrument to measure blood-flow-velocity, velocity profile, and volume-blood-flow. This system is more powerful compare with 2-dimensional B-scan tissue image. A system has been deve- loped and ii being evaluated using TMS 32010 DSP. We use this DSP for the purpose of real-time spectrum analyzer to obtain spectrogram in singlegate pulsed Doppler system and for the serial comb filter to cancel clutter and zero crossing counter to estimate Doppler mean frequency in multigate pulsed Doppler system. The Doppler shift of the backscattered signals is sensed in a phase detector. This Doppler signal corresponds to the mean velocity over a some region in space defined by the ultrasonic beam dimensions, transmitted pulse duration, and transducer ban(iwidth. Multi- gate pulsed Doppler system enable the transcutaneous and simultaneous assessment of the velocities in a number of adjacent sample volumes as a continuous function of time. A multigate pulsed Doppler system processing the information originating from presented.

  • A flow analysis for the erosion-corrosion damaged automotive water pump which causes vehicle fire is numerically performed using the CFX program, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The blade bending deformation and the blade clearance enlargement are considered in the analysis of performance reduction. For the cavitation analysis, the homogeneous multi phase model is adopted using the Ralyleigh-Plesset model for the rate equation controlling vapor generation and condensation.
