  • To validate the previous conceptual design of cover system, construction of the engineered barrier test facility is completed and the performance tests of the disposal cover system are conducted. The disposal test facility is composed of the multi-purpose working space, the six test cells and the disposal information space for the PR center. The dedicated detection system measures the water content, the temperature, the matric potential of each cover layer and the accumulated water volume of lateral drainage. Short-term experiments on the disposal cover layer using the artificial rainfall system are implemented. The sand drainage layer shows the satisfactory performance as intended in the design stage. The artificial rainfall does not affect the temperature of cover layers. It is investigated that high water infiltration of the artificial rainfall changes the matric potential in each cover layer. This facility is expected to increase the public information about the national radioactive waste disposal program and the effort for the safety of the planned disposal facility.

  • The monolithically coupled finite element analysis for a deformable unsaturated soil slope is performed to investigate matric suction distribution on a soil slope subjected to rainfall infiltration, which can consider the hydraulic-mechanical characteristics for the analysis. The soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC) are experimentally determined to estimate three types of hydraulic properties of domestic areas. Based on the physical properties, the distribution of matric suction is investigated by considering the major factors, such as soil conditions, rainfall intensities, and slope angles. It is found from the results of this study that the matric suction rapidly decreases with an increase in rainfall intensity, regardless a slope angle. The slope surface is more easily saturated when its saturated hydraulic conductivity is smaller than rainfall intensity, and for the case of multi-layered soil slope, hydraulic characteristics of slope surface has a significant influence on matric suction distribution.

  • The shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated earth material are highly important not only for evaluating the seepage characteristics but also the stability of levee for a lifelong. In this study, unsaturated strength characteristics of Nak-dong river sand and clay that frequently used for the levee construction in southern province of Korea were analyzed using unsaturated triaxial compressive test. The strength characteristics due to the variation of matric suction were analyzed using multi-stage compression technique and the results were directly compared with the non-linear formulation for the apparent cohesion ($C_{max}$), and the friction component ${\varphi}^b$ were determined and evaluated from the test for the application of linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Cohesion and friction characteristics of the unsaturated levee material under various suction phases were also explored during this study.

  • Soil structure and organic matter have been known to strongly affect water flow and solute transport, yet little information is available concerning soil hydraulic properties related to soil physical and chemical properties in the forest site. The purpose of this study was to quantify the spatial variability and spatial correlation of the measured parameter values from the plots established with the rainfall simulator on Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) dominated site in Kwangju. Kyunggi-Do. Measurement of soil water flux and retention were made with the inherent soil texture, soil structure, and organic matter. The method was based on the observation that when water was applied at a constant rate to the soil surface on each plot. The method was simple to apply and consists of following steps: (i) Wet the soil from a rainfall simulator with several known discharge rates on a relatively leveled soil surface with and without organic matter. (ii) Once the borders of the ponded zone were steady, saturated hydraulic conductivity( $K_{s}$) and the matric flux function(F) was evaluated from a regression of flux vs. the reciprocal of the ponded area. A conductivity of the form $K_{i+}$$_1$ $_{c}$= $K_{i}$( $_{c}$) [1-d /dz] where flux continuity implies. For this, continuity of matric potential at the interface at all times are as follows: $_1$( $Z_{c}$) = $_2$( $Z_{c}$) = $_{c}$ for steady state intake from water ponded on the soil surface. Results of this investigation showed the importance of understanding spatial variability in wide differences of water retention and saturated hydraulic conductivity with respect to pore geometry and organic matter contents which influenced the water flux throughout the soil profile.l profile.ile.

  • A concrete element is obtained through multi-steps, and its quality is affected by site conditions and control constituents of procedures. In these regards, in order to assure designed qualities of concrete and associated materials of the element good quality control method is necessary in various procedures. The existing quality control measures do not satisfy the requirements for the quality control activities at each production step. This study provides a more effective checklist for each phase of concrete work, which improves existing quality control checklist through extensive research on current practices and surveys from expertises. This paper also proposes the application of multi-facet codes to develop a customized checklist to improve the efficiency in field practices and the effectiveness in assuring the designed performance of concrete. This study finally provides a more effective checklist for each phase of concrete work by improving usability of the developed project sensitive matric quality control checklist through application experiments on construction project sites.

  • Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of the given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Therefore, many researchers have used a surrogate model that has a regression model performed on a data sampling of the simulation. In general, metamodels(surrogate model) take the form y($\chi$)=f($\chi$)+$\varepsilon$, where y($\chi$) is the true output, f($\chi$) is the metamodel output, and is the error. In this paper, a second order polynomial equation is used as the RSM(response surface model) for high speed train that have twenty-nine design variables and forty-six responses. After the RSM is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using a nonlinear programming method called VMM(variable matric method) This paper shows that the RSM is a very efficient model to solve the complex optimization problem.

  • In the car environment that the first priority is a safety problem, the large vocabulary isolated word recognition system with POI domain is required as the optimal HMI technique. For the telematics terminal with a highly limited processing time and memory capacity, it is impossible to process more than 100,000 words in the terminal by the general speech recognition methods. Therefore, we proposed phoneme recognizer using the phonetic GMM and also PDM Levenshtein distance with multi-layer architecture for the POI recognition of telematics terminal. By the proposed methods, we obtained high performance in the telematics terminal with low speed processing and small memory capacity. we obtained the recognition rate of maximum 94.8% in indoor environment and of maximum 92.4% in the car navigation environments.

  • Multilayer perceptron neural network was trained to determine the factor of safety and slip surface of the slope. Slope geometry is a simple slope based on Korean design standards, and the case of dry and existing groundwater levels are both considered, and the properties of the soil composing the slope are considered to be sandy soil including fine particles. When curating the data required for model training, slope stability analysis was performed in 42,000 cases using the limit equilibrium method. Steady-state seepage analysis of groundwater was also performed, and the results generated were applied to slope stability analysis. Results show that the multilayer perceptron model can predict the factor of safety and failure arc with high performance when the slope's physical properties data are input. A method for quantitative validation of the model performance is presented.
