  • Floating debris provides substrates for dispersal of organisms by ocean currents, including algae that thrive on plastics. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Tohuku, Japan resulted in large amounts of debris carried by the North Pacific Current to North America from 2012 to 2016. In 2015-2016, the plastics in the debris bore a complex biota including pink algal crusts. One sample (JAW4874) was isolated into culture and a three-gene phylogeny (psbA, rbcL, and SSU) indicated it was an unknown member of the red algal class Stylonematophyceae. It is a small pulvinate crust of radiating, branched, uniseriate filaments with cells containing a single centrally suspended nucleus and a single purple to pink, multi-lobed, parietal plastid lacking a pyrenoid. Cells can be released as spores that attach and germinate to form straight filaments by transverse apical cell divisions, and subsequent longitudinal and oblique intercalary divisions produce masses of lateral branches. This alga is named Tsunamia transpacifica gen. nov. et sp. nov. Sequencing of additional samples of red algal crusts on plastics revealed another undescribed Stylonematophycean species, suggesting that these algae may be frequent on drift oceanic plastics.

  • In recent years, dense small cell network has been deployed to address the challenge that has resulted from the unprecendented growth of mobile data traffic and users. It has proven to be a cost efficeient solution to offload traffic from macro-cells. Software defined heterogeneous wireless network can decouple the control plane from the data plane. The control signal goes through the macro-cell while the data traffic can be offloaded by small cells. In this paper, we propose a framework for cell virtualization and user association in order to satisfy versatile requirements of multiple tenants. In the proposed framework, we propose an interference graph partioning based virtual-cell association and customized physical-cell association for multi-homed users in a software defined small cell network. The proposed user association scheme includes 3 steps: initialization, virtual-cell association and physical-cell association. Simulation results show that the proposed virtual-cell association outperforms the other schemes. For physical-cell association, the results on resource utilization and user fairness are examined for mobile users and infrastructure providers.

  • This experiment was performed to investigate apoptosis during undergoing patho-genesis of Salmonella gallinarum(SG)-infected chicks. 16 days old, 49 chicks was infected with SG (10$\^$6/-10$\^$8/ CFU/㎖) experimentally, they were autopsied to remove liver, spleen, intestine and lung at 1, 6, 12hr, 1, 2, 4 and 7 day post infection(PI) respectively, for H-E and TUNEL staining. Grossly, white foci in the liver and enlarged spleen were seen on 4 day PI and coppery bronze liver, dark-red discolored intestine, green-yellowish discolored and enlarged spleen was observed on 7 day PI. Histopathologically, multi focal necrosis in the liver, follicle hyperplasia in the spleen and inflammatory cells infiltration in the intestine were shown from 2 day PI and more severely observed on 4 day and 7 day PI. In TUNEL analysis, apoptotic cells reached a maximum at 6hr PI in the liver and intestine and at 12hr PI in the spleen, and then decreased the levels of controls by 7 day PI.

  • Microbial digestion of feed in the rumen involves a sequential attack culminating in the formation of fermentation products and microbial cells that can be utilized by the host animal. Most feeds are protected by a cuticular layer which is in effect a microbial barrier that must be penetrated or circumvented for digestion to proceed. Microorganisms gain access to digestible inner plant tissues through damage to the cuticle, or via natural cell openings (e.g., stomata) and commence digestion from within the feed particles. Primary colonizing bacteria adhere to specific substrates, divide to form sister cells and the resultant microcolonies release soluble substrates which attract additional microorganisms to the digestion site. These newly attracted microorganisms associate with primary colonizers to form complex multi-species consortia. Within the consortia, microorganisms combine their metabolic activities to produce the diversity of enzymes required to digest complex substrates (e.g., cellulose, starch, protein) which comprise plant tissues. Feed characteristics that inhibit the microbial processes of penetration, colonization and consortia formation can have a profound effect on the rate and extent of feed digestion in the rumen. Strategies such as feed processing or plant breeding which are aimed at manipulating feed digestion must be based on an understanding of these basic microbial processes and their concerted roles in feed digestion in the rumen.

  • A novel analytic solution has been derived for the bird-cage receiver coil of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, which is widely used in 3-dimensional medical imaging, by transforming the coil into an equivalent circuit model by using a transmission matrix-based circuit analysis. The bird-cage coil composed of N legs is divided into a cell for which input impedance is to be analyzed and the remaining N-1 cells, and then a transmission matrix corresponding to the N-1 cells is converted into a circuit to transform the 3-dimensional bird-cage coil into the 2-dimensional equivalent circuit model, which is suitable to derive the analytic solution for the input impedance. The proposed method derives directly the analytic solution for the input impedance at an arbitrary point of the coil unlike the conventional analytic solution of a bird-cage coil, so that it can be used not only for resonance frequency calculations but also for various coil characteristics analyses. Since the analytic solution agreed well with the results of computational simulations, it can be useful for the impedance matching of a coil and the analysis and the design of a multi-tune bird-cage coil.

  • We have developed a facile method to position different dyes (N719 and N749) sequentially in a mesoporous TiO2 layer through selective desorption and adsorption processes. Only upper part of the first adsorbed N719 dye was selectively removed by the desorption solution formulated with polypropylene glycol and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide without any damages of the dye. The desorption depth was controlled by the number of desorption process. Multi-dyed dye-sensitized solar cells (MDSSC) were fabricated by utilizing the method and their photovoltaic properties were investigated. From the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) measurement, it was found that the MDSSC exhibited the extended spectral response for the solar spectrum while without decrease of maximum IPCE value compare to the DSSCs using one kind of dye (N719 or N749). The highest photocurrent density of 19.3 mA/cm2 was obtained from the MDSSC utilizing $15\;{\mu}m$ N719 / $14\;{\mu}m$ N749 bi-layered mesoporous TiO2 film. The photocurrent density was 25% and 8% higher than that of the DSSC using only N719 and N749 dye as a sensitizer, respectively. The power conversion efficiency of 9.8% was achieved from the MDSSC under the AM 1.5G one sun illumination.

  • ZnTe semiconductor is very attractive a material for optoelectronic devices in the visible green spectral region because of it has direct bandgap of 2.26 eV. The prototypes of ZnTe light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been reported [1], showing that their green emission peak closely matches the most sensitive region of the human eye. The optoelectronic properties of ZnTe:O film allow to expect a large optical gain in the intermediate emission band, which emission band lies about 0.4-0.6 eV below the conduction band of ZnTe [2]. So, the ZnTe system is useful for the production of high-efficiency multi-junction solar cells [2,3]. In this work, the ZnTe:O thin films were deposited on Al2O3 substrates by using the radio frequency magnetron sputtering system. Three sets of samples were prepared using argon and oxygen as the sputtering gas. The deposition chamber was pre-pumped down to a base pressure of 10-7 Torr before introducing gas. The deposition pressure was fixed at 10-3 Torr throughout this work. During the ZnTe deposition, the substrate temperature was 300 oC. The optical properties were also investigated by using the ultraviolte-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer.

  • A tetracycline resistant Vibrio parahaemolyticus, capable of growing on TCBS medium containing tetracycline, was isolated from cultivated fishes. A gene responsible for the tetracycline resistance was cloned from chromosomal DNA of the V. parahaemolyticus strain using Escherichia coli KAM3, which lacks major multi-drug efflux pumps (${\Delta}acrB$) as host cells. The nucleotide sequence and homology analysis revealed an open reading frame (ORF) for tetracycline resistance protein (TetB). In order to characterize the antibiotic resistance of TetB originated from the V. parahaemolyticus strain, the gene was sub cloned into plasmid pSTV28. The resulting plasmid was designated as pSTVTetB and transformated into E. coli KAM3. E. coli KAM3 cells harboring the recombinant plasmid pSTVTetB are able to grow on plates containing tetracycline and oxytetracycline but not doxycycline, indicating that the tetB gene confers the tetracycline- and oxytetracycline-resistance to the host cell.

  • The seed characteristics of Withania somnifera were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy in order to determine the specific features of this species. The seed color is yellow, and the seed shape is reniform measuring between two to three millimeters. The seed of W. somnifera is exarillate and albuminous. The seed coat type is exotestal. The seed coat develops from a single integument. The young seed coat consists of single-layered exotesta, multi-layered mesotesta and single-layered endotesta. However, parenchymatous mesotesta layers are completely compressed at maturity. Therefore, the seed coat was represented by sclerenchymatous exotesta. The primary sculpture on the seed surface is reticulate, and cells are irregular in shape with undulating anticlinal walls. In addition, the seed surface has several characteristic holes between the anticlinal walls.
